  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PLAYBACK

Hi Guys,

playback is absolutely fantastic news.
I can't wait to check it out.
You m

The idea is to capture a first take, which will be the default position. The you can select a single frame (in the playback) which is then kept in kind of a framestore (I hope the EPIC is in a way capable to do so). Then you can overlay that still frame to the live video (e.g. using the camera controls to control opacity) so that we can adjust to get the same starting position once again. It would be extremely helpful to do it in camera and without needing to tether anything to it.

Its not urgent and we take it when it comes. I just want you to know about that wish and encourage anyone else who likes the idea to chime in.

Cheers & thanks,
Axel

Arri had that in their video assists implemented. That is roughly 15 years ago.

Warm regards to Frankfurt,

You made my day!

As the RED team is pushing boundaries and obviously climbed a milestone mountain with this one, here is a another nut I'd like to see cracked by them (and surely others want the same):

We often shoot green screen and very often web avatars. So poeple stand in front of the greenscreen and start different motions, but all sharing the exact same starting position.
While we have the chance to control this using a live video mixer (such as the BMD ATEM Studio), it would be amazing if it could be done inside the camera!

We discussed this long time ago for RED ONE, and many chimed in and found it a useful idea, so I bring it up again.

I would like this as well.

We do a lot of green screen work with virtual environments. It would be great to grab a still of the 3D environment and overlay it on the live feed to match the camera angle and framing.

Sooooo... +1 again.

Hans,

is that an "I want it too" or a "I have that since 15 years" ? :-)

Best wishes to the Pott.

Well if Arri wants to compete now, they just need to offer a 10,000 4k camera to the general public. I would actually love that option.

Awesome! Thanks for the hookup Redteam! You guys keep on cranking out the jams and blowing everyone's mind. You're awesome!

It's working verry good - been testing all day. Good stuff=) I also see a 720p option on hdsdi output thats not active yet, but thats good news for some VA recorders.

You mean $14k right? Or rather $17k after 12-31-11.

I always love reading these smart-ass comments. The Alexa doesn't come with media, SXS cards, viewfinders, etc.. either when they tell you the first price.

Yeah, it's funny too, that now they just happen to be doing 120fps as well. So, this other guy says he would be interested in Arri at 10K, howabout Red at 10K? Seriously why follow people who chase other peoples bench marks -- reward excellence (RED) not copy-cat like behavior like some other well known companies.

I mean that Arri is a boatload more expensive for whatever package or product you select from RED. RED is bad ass and completely modular, conceptualized for photo, cinema, etc. I bought RED for this reason. I'm sure there are a set of features on the Alexa that RED may not have, but I'm sure RED will work them in for free eventually. I doubt ARRI will. It would be great if Arri could compete in a range close to RED so RED may have more competition. Competition being a good thing as it inspires creativity and new products which means the customer wins.

I will bet my Scarlet footage looks better than 100,000 Alexa. I'm happy to have playback but would settle without it for a 90,000 price break.

I guess I'm the other guy :) BTW, it was a joke. I bought my RED Scarlet X on Nov 3rd. I think competition is good, but I went with RED.

You guys do realize that the Epic is just getting started right? I mean, we have not seen HALF of what's in store for that camera. ARRI is a solid company, I love 'em, but they have refused to make the nessesary changes for today's world. They just got a little too big, and a little too old.

If RED ever comes out with a pro-res or MXF recorder... That's it for Alexa.

Personally, I like seeing everyone else being destroyed right now - kinda fun seeing other companies freak the (expletive deleted) out.

I agree. About 2 months back I called around to get professional opinions outside of the RED forum and I called Abel Cine in NYC, LA and Chicago. I spoke to two different technical guys educating me on the cameras. They all told me the same thing: that RED ruled in quality over both the Alexa and the F3 the other cam I was interested in. After speaking for hours about these cameras which they market and sell (they do not sell RED btw) it was clear that in resolution and weight ratios, etc that they actually recommend RED.

I was literally planning on getting a huge loan and going with Alexa. Besides the dynamic range it has nothing better than the picture quality of a Sony F3, so with proper exposure (watching for clipping or exposing for the highlights first) it is basically an F3 image at 4:4:4 1920 x 1080.

I have taken a look at the Alexa as we honestly were going to build gear and accessories for it as a product from our company, but decided against it. My thoughts however are the Alexa is very big in person. It doesn't seem that way online, but in person it is pretty big and looks like a lunchbox. Yes a very technical lunchbox and I have heard great things about reliability, but the EPIC is the shit !! If Scarlet is as good of an image which Graeme and others here say it is identical, then I'm glad I didn't get that loan and I'm already happy with my purchase of the Scarlet X.

Call it what you want and please forgive if it came off as an attack, it was not. Red has redefined what value is to a customer, and not just in a camera specific way. So, shit's late sometimes, we've all been late at one point or another, and the amount of growth this company has made with leaps and bounds is astonishing.

I agree, and I'm patiently waiting for mine to arrive.

Hey Jay, I bought your Red 101 DVD like over a year ago and watched it several times. Funny thing is I owned nothing from RED until now but figured it would help me get prepared. I'm sure it helped.

smart-ass comment? Did my post come across as negative? because that wasn't my intent.

The Scarlet-X cost $14k for a ready to shoot package. right?

So if Arri really wants to be competitive they also need to put out a ready to shoot package for $14k.

Or $17k after the new year. Because I doubt they could come up with something with less then two months left.

I thought $17k is a good deal. And one that I'm hoping to be able picking up next year once I have the money.
