  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I ready to jump the gun on Teradek Cube 350 HDSDI with RED Proxy recording license and a Powertap (I think that can be connected to the RED Brick, right?) to LEMO power cable.

The idea of viewing the footage on 2 iPads is just so awesome, however, the workflow involves a Macbook Pro (or Macbook Air 11") in the equation, if proxies need to be played back on the iPads. The whole process requires around 15 to 30 min of setting it up. Any idea guys on a better or more easier solutions than a Teradek. Or is the "playback" going to be enabled soon, (like in a month).

listening.... :)

For now, Kipro mini is the best, fastest way to view playback, and to go back and view in HD (propper) every shot over the last week through pressing a simple arrow button.
The NINJA SAMIRAI when it comes out will be even better with a small screen attached.
The Teradek Cube is fun, and a great wifi . ipad gimmick... but seriously in a fast moving shoot, its a pain in the arse. (hopefully it will become easier and faster to use as time goes on)

Speed and Simplicity is the Kipro mini :)

.... Thats until camera playback is finally enabled.

That would seriously put the "P" in "Perfect" for me.

Thanks for that. Playback direct from EPIC would be perfect. :smile5:

AJA?? (USD 1995.00)Hmm. I will not be shooting until mid-Sep. I think I'll wait for Samurai (Touchscreen, HDD slot etc USD 1499.00). But Teradek, is just too cool especially for my clients (with iPads, especially in Dubai).

Have you used Teradek cube on a shoot, how do they fare, in terms of setup, latency on their adhoc network and overall usability?? what if I get a Macbook Air 11" and take out iPads out of the equation.

Do the quicktimes have the same timecode as the r3d files?
Will I be able to reconform them for e.g. grading?

Havent tried... I like to use RAW / transcoded exclusively , not so much a Video out pro res. May as well use a ALEXA if I was to do that. :)

Ill do a test and see... but odds are. I don't think it would.

We should have playback on EPIC soon... If you NEED playback solutions now, there's not much you can do. You can drop the SSD into a reader on a decent laptop and play it back there -- works just fine for most of us. Some are using external recorders. I personally don't like the AJA KiPro mini. Weird, it's like the only AJA product I don't like. Take a look at the Atomos Samurai if you want an HD-SDI recording solution. It just started shipping, just under $1500. Very nice little unit.

nope.... Atomos Samurai not shipping yet, just checked there site.

I'll check tomorrow, but I think they're trickling out now. Maybe it's still a pre-release or beta phase. I actually saw one in action last week, connected to an EPIC (mine)... I'll find out where it came from.

Asif, just to let you know, the Teradek works fine with R1. EPIC, as far as im aware doesnt work with the proxy system but I may be (and most likely am) wrong. Transmission is A-Okay.

What environment are you planning on using all this in? Ive found the Teradek to be great in studio situations but havent actually taken it out to the desert.

Im not sure replacing the Ipads with a macbook air makes any sense at all. Isnt the point of this to utilise the Ipad/Iphones mobility? Or are you just after the Proxy recording?

In terms of Dubai Clients with ipads..... trust me, Most of those who arent too cheap to buy the .99cents app lose interest after about an hour and still end up crowding round my station.

I'm with Jeff. In the short term, I am ejecting a SSD and reviewing it in RdCine direct from the Red SSD reader on my old(ish) Macbook Pro. Works well enough to check exposure, framing and basic take appearance. All of my shooting is out in the world with little if any crew or other support. I do look forward to having Epic playback soon.

Andrew, I'll be using both indoors and outdoors.

I think MacBook Air, would be great for mobility and playback.

Let's say if we need to playback proxies from our iPads, I would need to record the proxies on the MacBook pro and (I don't know if it's possible) create a adhoc network(if using a router is cumbersome) on the MBP and make it available through "Air Video Server", then connect the iPads to the MBP's adhoc network and use AirVideo to access the H.264 files from the MBP. I'm exhausted just from writing this.

However, if we just use our latest MacBook air 11", it will record the proxies after connecting to the teradek's adhoc and because MBA's are extremely light, have a big enough screen, it's almost as good as an iPad. I think they make good replacement than carrying MBP just to view playback proxies on the iPad. This makes more sense to me.

I still think in a hectic shoot schedule, it's still cumbersome to shutdown the epic, take the SSD out, load it on MBP just to preview the shots you have taken.

And after much thought, I have decided getting a teradek cube is a safe choice, because even when playback is enabled extra monitoring for clients will be required and with firmware upgrades from the Teradek, the performance will be better.

Shut down? Er, no you just pull the SSD and pop in another one. Review on a laptop that is set up and ready to go. It takes like 5 seconds longer than doing it on the camera. Of course, that depends on how close your system is and how accessible, if you have help or whatever.

You still have me confused on the "shutdown the epic" part...

Anyway, it is what it is. Playback isn't enabled yet, will be "soon". Don't know exactly when, just when it's ready. Until then, if absolutely need on-camera playback, then epic is probably not your camera. Or you can use an external solution until we have playback. I can get by without playback most of the time. I rarely take the time to review every take on set. If I'm shooting wildlife or live event coverage, which I tend to do, I don't have time to review anyway and even if I did, it's over and done anyway.

Seriously, who reviews every take right on camera anyway? Really? Even with the RED One and other cameras, I do most of my review at the DIT station or afterwards when I log the footage.

RED One has only had one update in the past few months, I think two this year.

Curently EPIC is undergoing a lot of changes. We had an update last month, one last week. As they finish up a lot of the underlying details and everything stabilizes, I think we'll see a flurry of firmware updates as many of the features get enabled. We can only guess as to how many and how fast. The RED One went through a couple years of updates every month or two. Keeping up with them is not really a big deal. If you're a registered customer, you will get an email about the update and it will be posted to these forums anyway. You can jump on it right away, or wait for others to do so and see if they have any problems. Some firmware updates will let you roll back, some will not after they are installed, if they reprogram any of the internally programmable bits. It's almost always best to stay current with the latest firmware.
