I've been planning for two years but still can't decide between 8x, scarlet, or Epic the camera formerly known as Prince. Wait. Wut?

I hope I'll get at least a free t-shirt or a cap with my starting kit. :D

Scarlet & 2011 are around the corner and we're all thinking what kind of accessories we'll need.

So, I'll start with my planned run'n'gun rig (estimated prices):

- 1 x RED Scarlet 8X kit 5 750 $
- 1 x SSD module supplement 1 000 $
- 1 x 5'' LCD supplement 700 $
- 1 x SSD 64 gb 950 $
- 1 x RED top handle 175 $
- 1 x RED Gunner 1 000 $
- 1 x RED mic attachment 150 $
- 1 x RED Station RED Mag 1.8'' 250 $

Roughly 10 000 $. A little bit more than expected for a starting kit.

nice, but only one ssd????... hmmmmm

I'd get at least 2 SSD if I could, but I try to keep the whole kit under 10 K $ because the REDcam isn't the only thing I'll need :
- more HDD storage (home & travel)
- new colorimeter
- new laptop
- a protective case
- few RED bricks.

:banghead:

Hello, I'm new to the scarlet seen having owned a 7d and a GH13 which I loved but Im wanting my next cam to be a scarlet

how does this rig sound?
$2750 ---brain for Cinema
$900 --2.8" LCD
$750--16GB + CF module
+ battery/power?

anything else?
Im looking at the barest min. config
I was wondering if the SSD module would take a non propietary SSD and same with CF?

note, they do sometimes take other non-red media, in the case of cf cards, but the features are limited, like only being able to shoot 2k. this is due to the inconsistency of the media that is available, even top of the line. red has the best media, period. and the only media that can cope with the amount of data coming out of the camera.

for that brain, you'll have to get RED mini primes, though there will probably be other mounting options, but there will likely be a big crop factor on the lens.

$500--Side CF
$1250--Battery Module

The Cinema Scarlet brain now costs an extra thousand (due to the advent of HDR). Beyond this you would also need Red Mini Primes (Obviously You could get other lenses but the miniprimes are a perfect fit for Scarlet), a Scarlet Module adaptor, some RED CF Cards, and a REDMOTE (or side grip as they serve similar control functions).
That would end up around $10,000. If your looking for something in the 5-6 grand price range you should go for the Fixed Scarlet.

Might also need lens adapters (canon-nikon-pl if cinema is preferred to fixed) and of course lenses.
At the end, whatever Brain I choose between fixed, cinema or S35(now Epic-S), I would need:
The 5" lcd
Side handle
Dual battery adapter+ batteries
(lenses adapters)
media(probably ssd, min 128GB) + module
Maybe Red bricks
Red mag
Red gunner (not actually sure)

Well I'm certainly going to sell my car ! ;)

I like the idea of getting a cap! And I wouldn't sell my car. RED's ethos has always seemed about being more than what you know yourself to be, as a business and with your product. Feel confident in what you know you can achieve and suddenly you'll love the fact that you can drive around in your car with your gear safely locked in the boot/trunk.

I'm already building my own easy packdown shoulder rig with engineered bits from a local tradesman to already add to my sturdy tripod and Small HD LCD and Mac Pro and lenses. I have banged away with a Sony Handycam with a lens adapter for about two years, so the add ons just keep piling up. I have always figured that the Scarlet/Epic-L would always be just around the corner so just tacking away at the add ons has saved me dollars over time.

I always wonder how many SSD modules one would need on a small package. Turnaround on filming can be a lot les on smaller projects, so unless you desire a bucket load of media, 1 or two media units would do. Add in a battery or two to get started off, and I would think a few hours after unpacking, I'd have a 5 minute short ready to roll into the edit suite to play out.

- 1 x RED Brick supplement 250 $
- 2 x SSD 128 gb 3 600 $
- 1 x RED top handle 175 $
- 1 x RED Gunner 1 000 $
- 1 x RED mic attachment 150 $
- 1 x RED Station RED Mag 1.8'' 250 $

11 650 $ (updated 12/24)

A little bit more than expected (under 10K) for a starting kit.

Seems a very spec :) What about battery power? Whats the Brick supplement?

I have R1 and some elements of the rig so my Scarlet Fixed rig would be:
- 1 x RED Scarlet 8X kit 5 750 $
- 1 x SSD module supplement 1 000 $
- 2 x SSD 128 gb 3 600 $
- 1 x RED top handle 175 $
- 1 x RED Gunner 1 000 $
- 1 x RED Station RED Mag 1.8'' 250 $

Latter, I would add few things as needed.

- 1 x RED Scarlet 8X kit 5 750 $
- 1 x Base Production Pack 1250 $ (I suppose there will be one for Scarlet)
- 1 x Red Rock Micro microEVF 575$ (if it comes out someday...lol)
- 1 x Red Rock Micro microFollow Focus Bundle 19mm 772,50$ (until Red announces a Follow Focus made for Scarlet, if they made one)
- 1 x RED Brick supplement 250 $
- 2 x CF CARD (4 pack) 16 gb 2000 $ (so... 8 cards !)
- 1 x RED mic attachment 150 $
- 1 x RED Station CF CARD READER 250 $

So.... 9197.50$ ! I'll may have to add a MattBox solution which is quite expansive I think but... Wait and see now.
But all of this is subject to change (or not) when further informations will be out about the Cinema Scarlet and its package if they decide to make one.

EDIT : I forgot that I'll want a side handle BUT I don't know its price (if it has already been announced).

Is follow focus even needed with the new Redmote and lens functionality?

It semms that the Redmote PRO will have a follow focus ring. BUT, anyway, I'd prefer a good old mechanical one because with the interchangeable Scarlet, I could be able to use full manual primes and get avoid of any kind of electronic or motor and stuff that could add weight to the lens. It seems also, from what some DOPs told me, that lenses with motors have less optical qualities.
