  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PL Mount 11-16mm f2.8 Prototype, Manual Iris

Just tested mine out last week. I feel the flair even at 11mm is very minimal. The zoom, focus and diaphram feel perfect. The image is excellent! It amazes me how all that can be squeezed into a lens at that price.

Quit the teasing man! ...unless, you have framegrabs to show!

I second that! Only the short focus range, which is not really a problem.

Good work guys.

Matt, are you guys allowing people to ship you their own Canon-mount Tokinas for the conversion? If so, do you have a number for the cost of it?

I believe you can send in Canon versions of the Tokina 11-16 for conversion. The discount is pretty much what you'd expect. Call Duclos to get the exact amount.

Thanks. Even if they only discount what they would pay by buying in bulk it would be fair. It is nice to know that you can do this since I am planning on getting one. Among other uses, for scouting with an APS-C sensor for a project using Red One and the Duclos Tokina as the widest lens in the rental package.

To me that looks brighter than I would expect the human eye to experience the scene.

Thanks to you and your driver!

This lens is a winner

I have this lens and LOVE it. It's not as fast as the Zeiss standard and Ultra Primes in the same focal lengths but its far closer in corner to corner sharpness, field illumination and geometry than it has any right to be. The UP 8R is in another class, but short of that, it covers the wide end remarkably well.

If you absolutely have to have the best wide angle performance possible for a specific shot (VFX perspective match, IMAX cut in, etc) then rent a UP. For the other 98% of shooting situations the 11-16 Duclos/Tokina PL Zoom will get the job done and I'll bet money no one who sees the finished footy will be able to tell.

Simply one of the best values in cinema glass I have ever come across.

And this baby is going to cover the Epic X sensor with no vignetting? If so, this will be extremely freekin wide.

Tom, it will cover Mostro FF35 at 15mm with minor vigneting, and at 16mm with no problem! 16mm on FF35 is even wider FOV than 11mm on this APS-C, I suppose it is equivalent to 10mm on APS-C. Come over and we'll slap it on your 5D and go shoot some 360 degree, color, night-vision. :)

Felix, there is zero doubt about that. You are completely right. And you can easily go to 1600. In fact, at 1600 you actually get a tad more dynamic range based on Daniel's advanced geek knowledge, and the added noise is minimal.

I am flying into the airport we have secured for our feature next ween, it will be a blast to have the actual glass that we will use on a sensor so very close in size to Mysterium. However, I suppose if we shoot 4.5k the difference will be greater. Does anyone know the exact FOV math for that?

A canon APS-C is only like 22mm. The Epic is 30mm. So an 11mm lens on Epic X should be crazy wide compared to say a Canon 10-22 on a rebel, or an EF 16-35 on a 5D2, right? 11mm on Epic X should be pushing the limits of a rectilinear lens, I would think.

You have a PL mount 11-16, Roberto?

Still waiting for mine, I'm somewhere in Batch 2, and was told on Friday that they are still 2 -3 weeks out on shipping mine. Sucks becasue I have a great shoot next week that this lens would have really helped out on, guess it's off to the rental, once again :(.

I was trying to say that a 16mm on full still frame 35 gives the equivalent FOV of a 10mm on an APS-C (1.6x).

No, I have a Canon mount. Not Duclos modified.

I don't think you can mount an ef-s lens on a 5D without some modification, does the Tokina allow it? If it does I think you would have some severe vignetting.

I believe voigtlander (cosina) makes a 12mm that covers full frame which I think is the widest non fisheye.
