This is a personal opinion.. My own feelings.

I'm pissed at Canon... The camera announcement was bad enough, but the REAL potential for them was their LENS announcement. The L series primes are the best lenses you can buy at that cost. They are amazing and most of them under $2,000.00. Because of their production ability, Canon had the chance to create a cinema version of this lens and really make a statement in that area.

But no... What to they do? They make cinema lenses and run RIGHT TO THE UBER EXPENSIVE CROWD WHERE OTHER COMPANIES HAVE BEEN CAMPED OUT FOREVER.

Yeah... That was smart. At this point, I think Canon is RED's best sales person. They are all but PUSHING us to buy RPPs! After all they just locked the RPPs in as the best deal in PL mount glass out there.

Jesus... These guys blew it on so many levels.

Jay

Jay... I simply could have not agree with you more!!

I'm glad I got in to the LEICA S-C Primes wagon... ;)

Cause I'll sure never pay that kind of money for a Canon Cine prime, sorry, Love the "L" series glass, but asking those prices as their first entry ion to the Cinema World? Think again Canon.

Yes. And no. Canon's just getting warmed up and there are new EF prime lenses that will be released in the near future for both photo and video use because of the advances made over the last few years in optics, materials, and cameras. As for the cameras, well, I think we all know where we are on that issue by now. :)

Totally agree with Jay and Ketch, not much point in selling the rehoused L's at $6800 ea there are better options. At $3-4000 you would have had my attention.

It was good to see Canon get out there and play but Nov 3 camera battle went to Red.

That was a pulled punch from Canon and a all force punch from RED. They were testing Jim out.

Ketch you are great at making people envious :) Leica envy :)

I agree.

Been saying for a few years now that (if canon were smart) they would turn the L series lenses into PL cine lenses or at least the primes. Zeiss has done this fairly successfully, so its a proven engineering task and obvious market to enter, specially since they now are offering a PL camera.

The (2) PL zooms from what I hear are very high quality entries, but at those price's id rather just buy Optimo's whch is what everyone ask's for. The numbers need to come in lower to get anybody to rent anything other then Optimo's.... or offer something very different in focal lengths or speed.

EF lenses are where their focus is going to be. The PLs are just their way of testing the waters right now since they offer a PL version of their camera.

It sure looks like your right, but Canon went to Hollywood for this roll out with adverts about new movie making equipment (targeting Hollywood) which suggests PL mounts, manual focus and a platform ready for movie making but it looks like indie film equipment and with pricing a bit high for the indie film makers budget.

You don't even know how good those lenses are and you make statements like that. Talk about close minded.

You obviously haven't played with the new Nikon G primes, they blow the Canon Ls out out of the water!

This I agee with wholehartedly.

This doesn't make sense. You can now control the IRIS and Focus on your L-series lens remotely with their iOS app. That camera is sick.

I have to agree here.

I think Canon has only 2 advantages over Nikon in terms of lenses: 1> Their marketing. 2> I like the Canon Tilt-Shift lenses better.

Agree all the way. My thoughts on Nov 3rd was to buy Scarlet with Al Canon mount and use their new cinema primes. Did not anticipate such a hefty price, and is not going to happen.

Once I've paid the camera off through work I'll eventually migrate to PL and RPP's. But until then, I'll make do with EF glass. Kind of sad.

I had hoped for something hybrid and new. My dream was a canon zoom lens for $7000 that was a constant aperture with iris ring and ef mount with auto focus as well. Something a little lighter than the full cinema zooms. Looks like we will wait to see what Red comes up with.

Canon STB.

Not that I'm hip to these new lenses, but this is not Canon's first entry into cine lenses. I think maybe you are forgetting the award winning K35 lenses which were very fast, offered a very nice look, and used to shoot many films.

All the Best!

I wondered how this thread missed that, glad you brought it up.

The other part of the equation is to consider their strengths. When you add in their broadcast lenses, Canon has more experience with high quality modern zoom lenses than any other company.

Also consider that Canon has time, they aren't really competing with anyone on EF mount cine lenses other than the sort of outdated-at-the-start Zeiss CP2s, so in marketing terms they have time to develop whatever they determine makes sense.
