Gabe, I'm just wondering if we are related in any way? I'm in the New Orleans area.

Anyway, back on topic, congratulations on the Pirates 4. I'm curious if they are going RED 3D with it. Is it going to be 3D? I'm almost certain it is, following today's box office for 3D films...
lol some of the comments there are hilarious:laugh:It will be in 3D...

Disney seems pretty committed to 3D, so with the RED announcement that means that it will be shot with RED in 3D... pretty friggen cool!
This is more of an opinion than anything. Why can't you shoot a period piece with blown highlights? If that's the director's vision...
Again I ask you (your previous post) - It does? How so?

Okay, well let's lay it out.
First, we're talking about Pirates of the Caribbean 4, so it seems very likely that they want the look to be the same as the first films. This is further indicated by them having the same cinematographer, Dariusz Wolski, even though the film's director is different.
Second, we know the film is going to be 3D which does lean toward digital since that's the only way to film 3D right now (the only case of 3D that's actually filmed using film now that I can think of is IMAX). The other option is converting to 3D in post, in which case it could be filmed using film (not entirely out of the question since Dariusz Wolski worked on Alice in Wonderland which used the post technique, although it was filmed digitally anyway). However, regardless, because of Alice we know Dariusz Wolski has shot on other digital cameras in the past, but is now choosing Red over them, which must surely mean something. There are other cameras like the F35 well known for their dynamic range that could be used in a 3D mount, but they've chosen Red MX over them.
Basically, I think you may be misinterpreting what I'm saying...I already knew this was going to be 3D, so it's kind of a given that it would be filmed digitally (again, Dariusz Wolski filmed Alice digitally too). The point is, out of all of the choices that are considered the best digital alternatives to film, they chose Red MX for a film following visually stunning films that were shot on film (meaning they'd want to get as close to that look as possible).
I guess basically, Pirates 4 = established look from previous films, meaning they'd pick the best digital camera to match film + Dariusz Wolski has used other digital cameras (which could be used in a 3D rig) which indicates he's not biased, but rather truly picking the camera he thinks is best suited.
Oh. No offense to RED or anyone, but I thought Pirates looked really really good shot on film. I loved the cinematography in it, and the grain structure just seemed to work really well with the film. I was kind of hoping they would shoot the 4th one on film too.
Oh well. Congrats to the RED guys!
Something tells me this movie will be the first official Red Ray release

yay! a RED post that has no mention of the word Scarlet, yay!
But Im still blown away by the whole idea of Epic and Scarlet
while others seem to be stabbing at the details...

This is great news for RED. Congratulations!
I haven't seen enough EPIC footage to evaluate this particular case, but given a budget such as POC, I too wouldn't shoot a period piece on digital.
In fact, as of today, I don't think I would shoot any story set in pre-1980 on digital, assuming the budget allowed me to choose whatever system I wanted.
