  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

I'm sure others have already spotted this, but it looks like the lower rear of the brain is now where the heat exhaust is located. Would that imply that the inlet is on the top?

It would sure make a lot more sense to pull air from bottom to top than vice-versa.

Tomorrow Never Knows.

Interesting!

Nothing like having hot air blow in my face while I op right behind the camera...

There's no way they'd do that. Ha. I bet it's the same, intake from the bottom exhaust at the top. Plus the back looks very modular. I'm sure there's going to be many power modules.

When I heard the ports were moving away to the side, I was thinking you can finally get a nice shoulder pad under there. With a fan intake or out-take, I would have to reconsider again. Oh well, time will tell.

PLEASE TELL ME I'M CORRECT:That picture is infact an iPad running a new version of the Redlink app. i.e we're seeing a streaming video feed directly from the Weapon.

Not made by RED. It's actually an HP Stream 7 ($54 Tablet) and not specifically weapon related.

PURE GUESS ALERT

PURE GUESS ALERT

I have to wonder if the Weapon might intake ambient air in the lower rear, move it cleverly around the internals, then exhaust warmer air up top? Perhaps any modules designed for rear mounting would have to be short enough to stay above the likely intake area where the ports lived on the lower rear of the Epic.

If the primary issue with noise levels is recording clean audio in front of the camera, might there be some advantages to moving any noise generators, like fans, to the rear? I realize that fan noise will echo off surfaces and in small spaces point source directionality might not be crucial. That said, in over 90% of the sync sound takes I've ever done, aiming the sound I don't want 180 degrees away from the sound I do want sure sounds (pun intended) like an improvement to me.

Perhaps the whole thermal equation has been reconsidered in designing the Weapon. According to Jarred, the Dragon performs it's best at a higher temperature than the MX (or the ALEV-2) so perhaps less cooling is required for the sensor. Newer processors based on smaller dies run cooler with less power draw so perhaps even with more muscle the boards will generate less waste heat. I also recall a note from Jarred during the Carbon Epic rollout about a material they had found that was a breakthrough in heat dissipation metrics with lower mass than typical heat sinks.

Better materials, higher nominal target temperature, evolved design and aiming any fans away from the action might just quiet both the camera - and it's critics - for good.

I think it has been mentioned before ... but weapons only blow-up ;-)

On a different note - Blowing air through the internal cavity of a camera ... takes far more space and a 1mm high heat pipe touching the hot stuff - with a condenser on the back.

[And elliptical port would allow high 'wind' speed on exit. Dimple and Flared to reduce turbulence. Coating of heat pipe with Pyrolytic coating .. should mean a far easier load for a slower speed fan to push air though.]

Just imagine how much trolling Jarred could (should?) do on April 1st... heh heh heh

ProRes and 1TB Mini Mag media? This is very nice 

Interesting conversation in another thread:

The original Meizler Module was 6 pounds. If just the proxy recorder was extracted and attached to the body, how much size or weight would that add to the body? But RED has presented an outward disdain for ProRes, certainly they wouldnt circle back at this point. Right guys? Help me out, Im going off the deep end of speculation, pull me back please! Help anybody?

I don't think they'll do Prores/DNxHD internally or otherwise (unless they allow 3rd parties to make modules), as that'd be more blasphemous than Arri saying 3.2k upressed is now than acceptable for 4k delivery. How many REDusers would say, "looks like RED copied Arri"? Probably none, but it'd be far more of a copy than the Alexa Mini (which was borne more out of gimbal/aerial requirement, not the competition).

Mike thanks for the sanity check.

Sanity is Calming, but madness is more interesting.

So, ProRes happened? :001_smile:

For editing proxies it's awesome, but I'm not sure why I would use it when I have r3d's with more data in similar or less file size.
