  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Photoshop CC and 8bit R3D limitation

Photoshop defaults R3D's to 8bit but you can easily change it to 16bit for any R3D. Once you open the R3D in Photoshop, click on Image menu tab, then mode, and click 16 bit... Now you're working in 16 bit with R3D's.

stupid question but...how are you opening R3d files in Photoshop CC/...whenever I try to open an R3d in Photoshop it automatically opens it as a movie file ...there was a time when it open the RED UI first and allowed you to choose what frame to import as well as changing the RED raw settings...it's no longer behaving this way. (and yes i installed the PS plugin)

Did you install the RED Adobe Photoshop Plugin? https://www.red.com/downloads

If not, you need to in order to work with R3D's.

You should be able to open it in 16bit directly. Once it was opened in 8bit/c you might have lost data. It doesn't get retrieved if you switch later to 16bit/c (It is not like in Ae!)

Did you chose RED Raw as format, while selecting the R3D file?
I canceled CC, so I can tell only about CS6, there it works fine for me.

Note that you should always update the Ps plug in when you get the newest RCX!

Yes I already did. It works fine and as expected in Cs6...but somehow CC always try to open is as a video file. (I have tried drag and drop or simply doing a file->open from Photoshop....)...

Have you tried to open a new Photoshop file in 16bit/c (in the targeted size) and use the "Place" option? Set the color space before you place it! It might be not the way to work for long, but as workaround? Perhaps June 18 will bring a relief for CC
users.

It should take a single image, if not scrub to the one you want to have and merge the file down.

Correct.

My workflow is to simply export a 16bit TIF and proceed from there. The importer plugin is cool for quick stuff, like sending a client a watermarked still with your Redcine-X Pro one light correction. But if you are "doing anything" to the files it's best to export that file and work from there currently.

Thanks Phil. RCX is the better way, the Ps plug-in is comfortable and welcomed in some cases, thought. RCX: more options anyway.
