Sorry for the long winded email..
80% of your customers cannot afford an EPIC without planning for it....
We (I) want and need to know whats coming so we can plan for it.
Mark, this shouldn't be too much of an issue as Jim has just reaffirmed that {Since we will always believe in the core concept of upgrade instead of "buy it new all over again", I think our customers will always have an advantage over those that invest in other systems.}
So all you need is a RED one/Epic and an upgrade budget you are set for life... unless REDs other philosophy "Everything in life changes... " has primacy
Seriously, RED is bowing to commercial/political landscape pressures that have existed for decades.
Consider a Sony customer who bought a f35 and now faces the prospect of F65 which is mooted to have mechanical shutter, built in ND filter, 8k sensor and native editing at less money than the f35.
Any prudent customer who buys Sony kit should know they have only a few years to pay the thing off before it could be superceded, whilst RED customers have been weaned on a diet of full roadmap disclosure and promise the REDs product will never become obsolete.
Sony prices have come down (not enough!) and Reds are going up, Sony announced its 4k/8k roadmap and RED is censoring theirs, if they meet in the middle and in the meantime RED customers have become more commercially mature in regard to electronic cameras it wont be a bad thing...
If RED by saying "we wont let you know what we are doing until we are ready to ship" can be translated as "we will only ship products that are out of Beta and that work in a professional commercial environment " well, thats a commercial plus of a kind that is more beneficial to business planning of the majority, than the flakiness of beta releases of the last 5 years. ie shipping the RED without audio and Epic without replay enabled.
I hope Red continue to sustain their R&d efforts, especially user interfaces and accessories, the Epic Canon electronic mount is a spectacular development that neither Arri nor Sony would have entertained.
RED is dead, long live RED.
