  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Philosophy change...

Sorry for the long winded email..

80% of your customers cannot afford an EPIC without planning for it....

We (I) want and need to know whats coming so we can plan for it.

Mark, this shouldn't be too much of an issue as Jim has just reaffirmed that {Since we will always believe in the core concept of upgrade instead of "buy it new all over again", I think our customers will always have an advantage over those that invest in other systems.}

So all you need is a RED one/Epic and an upgrade budget you are set for life... unless REDs other philosophy "Everything in life changes... " has primacy :)

Seriously, RED is bowing to commercial/political landscape pressures that have existed for decades.
Consider a Sony customer who bought a f35 and now faces the prospect of F65 which is mooted to have mechanical shutter, built in ND filter, 8k sensor and native editing at less money than the f35.

Any prudent customer who buys Sony kit should know they have only a few years to pay the thing off before it could be superceded, whilst RED customers have been weaned on a diet of full roadmap disclosure and promise the REDs product will never become obsolete.

Sony prices have come down (not enough!) and Reds are going up, Sony announced its 4k/8k roadmap and RED is censoring theirs, if they meet in the middle and in the meantime RED customers have become more commercially mature in regard to electronic cameras it wont be a bad thing...

If RED by saying "we wont let you know what we are doing until we are ready to ship" can be translated as "we will only ship products that are out of Beta and that work in a professional commercial environment " well, thats a commercial plus of a kind that is more beneficial to business planning of the majority, than the flakiness of beta releases of the last 5 years. ie shipping the RED without audio and Epic without replay enabled.

I hope Red continue to sustain their R&d efforts, especially user interfaces and accessories, the Epic Canon electronic mount is a spectacular development that neither Arri nor Sony would have entertained.

RED is dead, long live RED.

...If we see that our customers will need to make a decision on some emerging product, we'll help...

I'm glad to hear this;similar to what others have posted, a big concern for myself is the ability to free up the capital to make a significant purchase. I think some of the hesitation over this new philosophy, is borne out of a lack of resources, and the necessity to make the absolute right decision on gear the first time. In my case, I can say without the roadmap given by RED, I would have probably made the wrong choice in which camera to buy.

I'll also point out something simpler...

RED really does illicit an emotional reaction. I'm sure they're aware of it, but people love this camera and this company. Jim and RED has done a fantastic job at giving us products that we're excited about buying. Some of that emotion and the excitement will be gone, but if it helps RED be more competitive, it's mutually beneficial to RED and to ourselves to make the adjustment.

this actually made me laugh out loud. i hope we all have grandchildren when this is released.

little jarreds, jims. sounds damn fine..

Well, you can mate with them, I'm not :)

Any chance you can re-implement sending *emails* when there is significant news or information - for those of us who don't spend our time here on Reduser?

Yes this us avoid idea, there has been a few more too:

Having a blog summarising what has been revealed in general. You could even have a version that automatically updates as Jim posts. People could then concentrate on Jim instead of repeating questions, and turn up when he posts, flash mob style. This has the benefit of reducing unfocused forum traffic.

Using the first post to keep a summary of what had been revealed. Somebody could be employed to do that.

Twin thread threads could be implemented (New idea) like a sticky, the first thread goes on top and lists posts by Jim or team, or just an area for them to post updates. The second thread follows and lists discussion. There would be two buttons on a thread, and two arrows to the last posts. Email alerting would happen separately for each thread, allowing people to concentrate on the first thread if they are busy.

Email alerts canbe tied to the summary posts or the blog.

Just "This is an update from the Red team.", or team leader, email updates, is enough.

A very simple solution would be the "Jim button" on every thread, that searches for and lists every post by Jim (or Red team, or even thread starter). The posts would be displayed in full, maybe along with previouse direct post or post being replied too, making it easier to just read the Jim "file". The basic version should be easy to do.

Actually two buttons, one for Jim and one fir Red team, at the top of each forum, and for the site overall, listing subjects by thread and day would be a good alternative.

Any possibilities fire chief?

There is already a 'RED TEAM' button that can be used to skip to the next reply from a RED TEAM member.
It should appear in the upper right of any RED team member's post, if there is another RED response further in the thread.

For example - go to the first post of this thread and you'll see the 'RED TEAM' tag in the upper right corner of Jim's intial post.
Click on that and it will take you to the next post from a RED TEAM member.

Cool, workable at least. I hadn't heard of it.
