  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Philip Bloom and the Canon 7D by night: Wow !

he was kidding Mark...he just forgot the smiley. Dangerous thing to forget the smiley!! :)

Hey I think this is the first time I've seen you post here, Phil. Come around more often. A lot of good people here. :biggrin5::cheers2::beer:

Ah, the smiley. Yes, it is important. I get about a fifty emails a day from angry 12 year olds on youtube trying to troll me, so I expect the same on every website/forum I visit.

And this is how the world will end, not with a whimper, not with a bang, but the leader of an industrialized country forgets the smiley!
Honestly I think it's gonna be between the Brits and the Chinese. A Chinese diplomat is not gonna understand a British counterparts dry sense of humor and BAM! WWIII

Question to the DSLR master shooter...Mr. Bloom

Question to the DSLR master shooter...Mr. Bloom

Question to Phillp Bloom:

I read your post today and you mentioned that you weren't too happy for Canon to put APS-C size CMOS sensor on 7d? Why? I thought it was close to the R1 sensor size...of course without the great codec we all use here; Redcode. It is the size or the H.264 codec, you don't like or both?

yes why?? it should have less aliasing

Philip awesome work! Do you notice big differences in skew between the 5D and 7D?

Yes... how come you didn't address this ALL important issue in your review Phillip? I mean, it is like reviewing an HVX and not talking about the noise level.

:sneaky2:

Seriously though. Please... don't avoid this question, unless you were specifically asked by Canon to avoid it. Very likely. And that it was one of the conditions for you to get a beta 7D to play with.

In which case perhaps you could use a smiley, so we can get an idea of how serious the jello feels on the footy. Like this:

DECENT JELLO = :rolleyes5:

5D JELLO = :emote_headwall:

D90 JELLO = :puke:

Do you think before you post?

not a positive post, does not get us anywhere

I think Canon gave the camera to Phil to shoot a nice video and get people excited about the camera. He's not Consumer Reports.

And it worked...for me at least, have seen some pathetic RED vision and some great Canon vision and vise versa, I reckon it comes down to who is controlling the cam and what they are taking images of. I believe Canon is in front at the moment because of cost and size and they are available, Scarlet is still a dream that is not available and may never be available. Not wanting to shoot RED down, it's just the way I see that it COULD happen. I hope not

Why is everyone up in arms over that? I didn't mean any disrespect to Phillip if that's what you guys read from it. (?!?!) Maybe I forgot a smileys, or had one too many? :)

Seriously though, the only thing I can think of is that you guys thought I was dissing Phillip Bloom, which was not at all my intention. I didn't take a lot of time to write that post, and it may have come out all wrong. Maybe I though I was waaay funnier than what I really am.

Was I wrong to assume that perhaps Canon told him that this is a beta version and that they were working on that aspect? I didn't expect him to actually tell us anything that could be a detriment to his relationship with them. Maybe that joke didn't come across at all though. If so I am to blame for not taking the time to write it out well. I certainly didn't call him a liar or anything else. Is he your god? I am sure he wasn't bothered by what I say in the least bit.

Phillip, did I disrespect you in some way? If so, just so you know, I definitely didn't mean to. I thank you for all your reviews and all the information you share. And on top of all that you are very pleasant on camera. I wish you continued success.

Kholi, so weird to see you jump on me... all over again. Is this because I insulted one of your cameras? If that is the case, can't I have my own opinion? Chill out, dude. Oh, and (full) real names now on Reduser.

Alex, hope my explanation above suffices. Didn't mean to upset anyone.

Canon 7D is pretty cheap and nice DSLR that can shoot sort of "cripple" HD video at H264 compression with visible kind of color aliasing...

But RED ONE with super fast lenses like Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95, Canon FD 50mm f/1.2 or with the whole set of

Arri/Zeiss Master Primes can show in available light what is a REAL beauty of shooting RAW and REDCODE that Canon 7D can't.

Have a look to the collage (link below) of my test shots all HAND-HELD with RED1 at available light last December/January period using

Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/0.95 and Canon FD 50mm F/1.2, both indoor and outdoor. It was shot 99% @ wide open that caused some difficulties to focus with very tiny FOV.

Available lights were diverse halogen bulbs and tubes that you can find everywhere indorr and outdoor at night.

Also one part has direct audio recorded with old RED1 audio board using Rode NTG3 and Avid/M-Audio MicroTrackII audio line out to RED xlR in...

Also compare a quality of H264 from both RED1 and Canon 7D...

The file is a BIG one (sorry): 484.6 MB @ 1080p scaled from 4K>>2K>>1080p.

Not any CC except 10+ saturation added in RA B20, all R3D files processed diverse mostly from 320 ISO, some to 500 ISO and one @ 1000 ISO (one with the lowest light that has recorded conversation).

Keep in mind that there were just tests only and no any other sort of commercial or artistic intention involved.

Enjoy

sanjin is there any thread you don't bring up your noctilux or leica in general? :D

betsy: sanjin! we're out of milk! did you forget to buy some milk again?
sanjin: well betsy...speaking of milk..some pentax lenses have a milky quality..but my noctilux-m is crystal clear!

Roberto, in my small little mind it read like a diss, thanks for taking the time to explain yourself, anyway for me the big issue here that the fact that we are mentioning the 7d and the redone on the same sentence, wow for me that is a first, how can two products that are so far apart in terms of price be compared, but its happening, gotta love technology
