  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Peter Lik...

Peter owns an EPIC-M. This was his test to see how much he would use it and what he would use it for. He wanted a stress test... something that could break it. This was a very difficult shot.

I won't speak for Peter but he gave me a handwritten note to post next to the print on Nov. 3rd.

Alright. I thought about this, but now I feel even more sure.

I feel this was shot by a Scarlet. I don't disagree Peter owns an Epic, but why bring Jim...? I feel Jim came to let him use the beautiful Scarlet to get this footage. Why post a handwritten note next to the Nov. 3rd announcement? Why have a 10' print of this at the Scarlet event?

There could be many reasons, but I feel we have just witnessed Scarlet test footage.

Anyone else feel this?

Hi Jim, all others,

thanks for the tips.

Honestly I wasn't aware of Photomerge at all. So tis amazing I have it in front of me already. Will look into it.
Sometimes RTFM surely helps :) but we are kids who like to play intuitively, aren't we?

Cheers,
Axel

LOL

The grade is what makes this image. An artistic impression pretty much in line with my cliche of how I think Vegas wants to look.

And that's what makes it a bit controversial, too. It is an artistic impression, not just a bunch of pixels.

Whether I like it or not becomes a bit irrelevant. It is a statement both of craft, technology and artistic will, that stands all by itself.

It looks tonemapped.
So what?

It gives the glossy impression of Vegas that is the cliche, and then some which makes it odd in a way that makes me think once more.

Do I like the image...
Dunno really?

Do I like that it makes me think twice?
Sure. That is kind of te point in spending so much time on photography, isn't it?

I've listened to Peter talk about what he is doing and why... very thoughtful stuff. I am impressed at the lengths he goes to to get what he envisions. He grades like Fincher. He is one of the few that won't give up his Light-Jet because it is still the best printer on the planet. Plus he is delightfully quirky and almost has as many personality disorders as I do. That's saying' something. :)

Moth to the flame…

‘Evan” you are starting to freak me out.

Red Code(d) IA combined with paranoid delusions, with a severe a dose of magical thinking could certainly get someone into serious trouble. In spite of claimed “personality” disorders Jim’s message is still coming through loud and clear. Sometimes It’s hard to believe that anybody is really that good and knows how to play the game better than anyone else (as far as I'm concerned).

I suspect Jim is a Genius at many things and I’m hoping that messing with people’s heads is also one of his strong suits too.
Looking forward to sampling one or two (or maybe three ) of those 4000 bottles you mentioned… I imagine when those 4000 bottles are finally distilled that will have one hell of a kick to it and awesome complexity once fully matured in Oak barrels.Tasmanian wine must be pretty awesome…Tell me do you use Pine wood chips for growing your grapes or do you preferr Aspen type wood chips? I think that Oak makes a hell of difference to the "flavor" don't you think?

For such delusional and magical thinking… I think I have to make short trip back to Hollwood so I can seem more normal to everyone else. Must see if can get ducks in a line… maybe there is a good flight on Nov 3rd?

Really need to get a new “coffe” machine, all the ones we have (because of secrecy) work “off grid”; . (For our work we find it VERY important not to reveal sources…otherwise one may find that one is “terminated” ala Jim Cameron.)

[Side note: Evan… being an educator.... and with ADD being on the rise it must be an increasing challenge to get “kids” to really pay attention these day? Getting people to see beyond the superficial and obvious must cause endless frustration I would imagine…]

This thread was a really useful learning experience for me ... seeing a wide angle composition shot on 50mm ... wow, it makes total sense because if you've made the decision to spend time stitching then why bother with a wide angle. Also why bother looking at corner resolution when you can stitch with a window of the center. Good tricks to know, thanks for posting

The Phase One lenses (Mamiya) have a ton of resolution falloff on the edges... the RPPs don't. The Canons were a big disappointment on the edges. When resolution counted on the edges, the Canons were just not there. It was a big surprise to all of us. Anything over 70mm, the Canons were fine. 50mm and below... they just didn't measure up.

When it comes to pure resolution, the answer is RPPs, Master Primes and Leicas.

Jim

I'd be curious to know if you shot RPZ 17-50 as well, and how it performed compared those Canons "not beeing there on edges resolution". Not trying to bash, rather the opposite since loving the concept of a single economic RPZ lens
