  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Peter Lik...

If Epic can truly beat a medium format frame, through whatever software in post RED have just killed off Phase, Hasselblad & Leaf in one go. I find it difficult to imagine but that picture looks seriously good whether you like the grade or not. I shoot Phase all the time but now I'm even more desperate for a Stage 4 Epic. Or a S35 Scarlet without all the bells and whistles but the same still frame capabilities. Roll on the 3rd.

Only 152hrs to go!

...The Canons were a big disappointment on the edges. When resolution counted on the edges, the Canons were just not there.

When it comes to pure resolution, the answer is RPPs, Master Primes and Leicas.

Jim

I can't wait to see how the new Nano coat Nikkors compare, so far they seem to be very close to what I've seen form Master Primes
Especially the 14-24mm and the new 24 & 35mm 1.4s. It's much easier to get good edge performance on telephotos, much harder on wides and normals.

Based on the image format, it looks like it would be at least a 6 frame stitch, 3 across x 2 up at 2:1 native Red frame. might be 12 depending on overlap.

HDR (and HDRx) are dependent on two or more combined exposures. This was NOT the case here. The shot was graded, just like you would grade motion, from single exposure stitched EPIC frames.

Alchemy is a clever and simple tool. It does not make wild effects.

Peter owns the shots and is not likely to every give up any of his original files... any more than Peter Jackson would let us post original R3Ds from The Hobbit.

Peter is the one who said "EPIC wins."

The problem with the Phase shots was resolution in the corners and blooming of the lights. Plus, the Phase sensor is noisy at higher ISOs so he had to shoot ISO 100 and long exposures... which gives the classic long streaking cars look which didn't fit this shot.

I'm not suggesting anything other than this is what it is. Another use for EPIC as a DSMC.

I'm assuming since Scarlet is in the DSMC, with proper techniques you could achieve something similar? That grab is just amazing! I can't get over it. I keep coming back. I tend to wake up at 3 a.m. daily for water and check RU, I was on RU til 5 blown away. The wife was very mad that the light on my phone was keeping her up haha.

Good work Jim and RED Team, and beautiful shot Peter!

And apart from the great success the Epic stills is enjoying in the more artful Fashion genre, I am looking forward to seeing the results of its application in the Fine Arts. Very much so.

WOW ! very impressive. can't wait to see a red 617.

The point is that you can use an EPIC to make images that exceed a Phase One back. Or you can shoot The Hobbit. Or you can shoot an Indie film. And you can afford to own one. Plus we will be here for you.

It is not much more complicated than that.

Jim

One of the many advantages Red has over the usual suspects.

that is a gorgeous photo. Peter is a master. I went to his gallery years ago in San Fran and it always stood out in my mind. I hadn't heard his name again until the HDR posting on this forum about a year or so ago. Rad word

If someone showed me that shot I'd say that was some excellent CGI.
