  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Peter Jackson's Hobbit blog...

Heyyyyyyyy!!! How come MY EPIC's don't have their names engraved on the side. >:]

Thank you Peter Jackson (and Jim) for sharing that!!

When I first saw he story I was like, WTH? Why does he need SO many Epics? Makes total sense now. 3d means two cameras per set up, B cams, cams on special rigs, etc.

Cool guy, cool crew, cool cameras.....just pretty damn cool.

Wow Jim, congratulations. Talk about a great commercial for RED :)

Love this stuff... what I would do to be a fly on the wall on the Hobbit shoot! Thanks to Peter he lets us in on as much behind the scenes as he can.

The production designer of the film on that blog said "Colorwise the red camera tends to eat color a little, so we add more color"

what does he mean by this? It eats color compared to what? Is he saying Red Epic doesn't have the color reproduction/saturation of 35mm film or what?

Peter, I think that's just the default look of the REDGamma2 / REDColor2 space. It's pretty quick and easy to adjust that in the settings. Being RAW, we're very flexible in the look on how you develop the image.

Interesting that they even comment on the RED makeup issue, which has proved to be a problem on almost every shoot for me. I've started a chart of problem makeup brands/tones and meet with the makeup artist prior to every shoot to discuss. Most are very receptive and over the last year word is starting to spread and makeup artists are becoming more aware of how to deal with it. It's been detailed in this thread:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?55659-Makeup-showing-up-with-greenish-hue

I was hoping for some improvement on Epic but the problem persists. For me, it is the one major bummer of this camera, and something I don't have to deal with as much or at all when shooting any other camera. (alexa, 5D, film). I would love it if the RED TEAM could improve the camera in this area.

Awesome video! Congrats Jim!!

Can someone talk about what the makeup artist was talking about? I dont understand why they need to put so much red pigment on the prosthetics

That was so fun to watch! It's the film everyone has been waiting on and it just looks fantastic. Boy to be able to work on that project! Lucky dogs.

interesting. but how does you seeing a lot of green tint have to do with the Hobbit having to make their guys really really red?

can Graeme weigh in on both your post and on what The Hobbit talked about?

Peter Jackson's sharing of his film world is a lot more giving and nurturing than George Lucas has ever shown, respectfully.
