  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Peter and the Primes

dont' you have number 7 or something Gibby? :)

RED serial number 8 and two other REDs...

Both me and Jarred have been around RED for a long time...

-------------------------------------

Talking about the RPP's...they're seriously good primes...Jarred projected them for me several weeks ago. If I was primarily a prime lens user I would have snapped up one of the first sets of them. But they'll be rental items for me because frankly the genres I work in call mostly for zooms - although I almost always use zooms as variable primes, rarely zooming during a shot. Its just not practical timewise, or many times very unsafe, for me and my crews to walk to each framing in the genres we usually shoot - plus our rigs are kept as light as possible to increase mobility. Because our RED rigs are streamlined for low weight/increased mobility, we don't use matte boxes or follow focus units - also, we almost always eye focus RED in our genres. We're primarily hybrid style shooters. The right tools (lens & accessories) for our hybrid work are usually quite different than narrative shooter's rigs.

I'll be at the head of the line for the RED Electronic zooms when they're available. They'll live on my EPIC and Scarlet cameras. They should fit the lens needs for our usual hybrid production style perfectly...and I expect them to be REAL good lenses...bring 'em on!

My camera does stay a couple degrees cooler though because of the color... thats about all that is different.

I am using good old standard build 18.. it would be pretty sketchy of us to shoot all these tests to show off the primes on a camera was supercharged in some way :)

I would like to know more about this strange looking bokeh:

How did this happen? Is it an interference with the background? Is it a compression artifact? How does it behave in a moving picture?

Just wondering...

Jarred does have the anti-radar stealth coating on his camera to evade the cops...

but I'm not sure we know what your questions are trying to answer.

How did he do 1.2 ND with no IR filter and yet with no visible IR degradation as is typical if any of us do 1.2ND on a sunny day?

Thats a great question, I would like to know the answer to this as well.

Not all lenses transmit IR the same. Just what sort of IR degradation were you expecting to see?

I downloaded the R3Ds of the flowers around the tree. That definitely didn't look like a high-IR setting to me. Just because it's sunny, doesn't mean that IR levels will be high. There is definitely some CA or fringing visible in the 100mm R3D (C082) as the purple flower snaps into focus.

I'm really liking what I'm seeing so far. I'm anxious to get my hands on a set to play. Having trouble getting things to align just right on my end though, I'm actually thankful for the brief production delay. :crying:

Very cool thread. Can't wait to get my RPPs to run them through my usually combat trials.

Also, that clip-on MB is looking pretty slick. Whenever you guys decide to make some for the rest of us I'll be driving down there.

Correction - All the thanks should be directed at Peter... :)

I think we are going to have to start an annual REDUSER beach bash at Peter's new house.. its the party house of all party houses :)

Sounds like the perfect compliment to the annual Vegas event. Let me know if you guys need help setting that one up. :-)

Seriously guys, thanks for doing these tests. Very helpful. And for providing the R3Ds.

For all those who haven't had a chance to meet Peter yet, jarred is right on the money. A great guy, very talented, and willing to share his knowledge. He's been a great contributor to the forum.

Jarred, that RED looks so slick. Nice!

Peter has been around the world 15 times and you could mistake his resume to be an amalgamation of every film-school student's "if i has 3 wishes" list.

But more importantly the guy is a sweetheart... super nice guy with no Ego, which is why I gladly brought over my prized possessions to him this weekend and even left them in his capable hands to continue shooting this afternoon.

Late in saying, but I can definitely second this.:sifone: Peter is a great fellow who I hope to work with one day soon. Very very generous person.

I am up on a Bainbridge Island in the middle of Puget Sound off the coast of Seattle, WA, with Neil Rabinowitz (www.neilrabinowitz.com). His wife Beth grilled a king pink salmon and we just had a fantastic dinner. This place reminds me so much of my own country (Slovak Republic), as well as of New Zealand. I love it up here. It's going to be hard to go back to LA on Wednesday... But the footage we shot over the weekend is waiting and I can't wait to get back into it...

Thank You all for the kind words, but lets please focus on the star of this thread - the RPP's. Having spent the weekend with the complete set (including the 300) there is very little left to desire...

I sure can't wait for the 18, as well as the 14. I could live without the 21, but the 65 fills nicely the "hole" between 50 and 85. I would love to see as 150 at some point in the future to bridge the gap to 300. This is The Prime Set to have with Your RED ONE and 5K Scarlet/Epic...

See You back soon...

:) Peter
