Just curious... what was that thread you started about shooting commercially for under 19,000? I guess I'm being nosy, but I'm just confounded about your motivation for shooting nello when you apparently don't need to?

I guess it's just the garage mentality I've developed over the years trying to build business with insufficient working capital. It's just the way I think.

My first business was a color separation house started in 1990 using a Mac IIfx, Photoshop, a Nikon slide scanner and a typesetting machine. I hacked the Photoshop EPS files to introduce proper line screens and screen angles so that I could output 150 line screen color separations to a machine that, until then, was only used for outputting type and line art. I was able to charge half the going rate for color separations and compete against established businesses that had Millions of dollars of Scitex and Hell equip.

But you're right, maybe I should stop being so cheap!

Aren't automobile engines cast?

Yeah, both iron and aluminum. Any suggestion that a cast aluminum body is categorically unacceptable is ridiculous, unless, of course, you're planning on running nitro gylcerin through it. Of course, failure under nitro probably has more to do with the material than the fabrication process.

Wait until you get your Red One. Then tell it as you see it. The body is great.

I know the body is great, I've played with a RED. That's not the issue. The issue is that the communication seems to be full of avoidance. The body is good. So say that we felt like machining the body wasn't necessary because casting did such a good job. Just being straight with us is a good idea. We (red owners) seem to be a pretty forgiving group if you try to get it right.

You know, when this thread first opened, I made a reply that read "I think you were aiming for "ted@red.com", not "reduser.net."" I tacked a few smilies on there and figured it'd be a good way to lighten up a thread that was bound to head down an unfortunate path. I deleted the post 3 minutes later, fearing that some wouldn't understand my humor.

Matters like these may be played best if they're handled personally with RED rather than publicly where dozens of folks can chime in with "...yeah! He's right!" or "No way, Jim is the man!"
