  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Penelope Delta - sneak peek

but also confused me one thing when I saw in the "Making of the movie" from "Hurt Locker" DVD/Blu-Ray Extras

when assistant (AC) of Barry Ackroyd helping him to get off and on Aaton 16mm from his shoulder.

For me that means the camera is pretty heavy and you need additional help.

(Or Barry plays a sort of "DP King" on set that he requires many of AC helpers around him).

Any good camera assistant will make sure that the moment that "cut" is called, any hand held camera, be it a lightweight aaton or a heavy panavision camera, will be whipped off the operator's shoulders. Nothing to do with a "sort of "DP King"" I would expect nothing less on any feature film set.

You are wrong... production will ramp quickly after Tattoo.

Jim

...and the golden age of digital cinema begins.

Thank you, Jim, and the incredibly innovative team at RED.

I've heard that Aaton cameras aren't very reliable and they break often..I mean, they're french after all....

Well, french cars for example are pretty well known for their poor reliability...
The french aren't too good at manufacturing stuff...
They make some good wine and cheese, tough....

Yeah, those aircraft, medicines and medical equipment, and commercial and residential kitchen equipment just suck.

My grandmother's Le Creuset cookware "French Oven" that I'll use tonight for dinner is only in its third generation.

BTW they suck at architecture too...

Back on topic

Here is a crappy iPhone photo of the prototype.

I'm Intrigued. Particularly by it's availability to switch between two perf, three perf and digital modes.

That said, from an engineering perspective keeping the focal plane in line and registered exactly across those changes sounds like a difficult problem.

They said middle of next year for release, so we've got some time before we know for sure, but it's a great time to be a cinematographer :-)

Cheers,

Steve

I've shot or been on the set for hundreds of hours with Aatons, they are as reliable as any other high-end Film camera. The Aaton 35 was a particular beast regarding it's film loop size but nothing an experienced loader couldn't learn.

I was always admiring ergonomics of AATON... For me its a reference in industrial design for cinematographers...

Interesting times... the dual Film / Digital is good selling point. JP I have already proposed few months ago to a good friend as a good investment...

The SSD raid pack is what I thing will make this camera a winner.

About Greek letters the (Δ) is looking better, I thing, when its not capital... δ...

I thing I will wait for EPIC monstro... its the price barrier that puts ice to my affection to Penelope δ...

I like the Aaton form factor alot and they did get the 4k or greater right unlike Arri.

They missed the mark on size though. With Epic being so much smaller and smaller means more versitile and 3d capable, it will be tough to sell more rentals with it.

What is the price on the Penelope delta?

Looks nice...for 1986.

I'm sure it has great ergonomics, functionality and picture quality...although in 2010 we live in a time when technology allows a bit more creativity.

This perception of the term "professional" exclusively as "industrial" has to go - ASAP.

I know I might be flamed for this, but this too.

I always thought the D-21 was the prettiest of the digital cine cameras.

Its funny you post all these photos, because I think all of these designs are ugly haha. I don't like the way any of these look. Boxy is good for cameras, it means you can do tons of things with them mounting wise and gear wise.

Glad to make you smile.

I didn't post my opinion about the shown designs. It was redundant for the point being made, same as yours.

The point which you managed to miss was showing creative and evolved product design, which creative devices should have in 2010, especially with 5-6 figures.

There are also types of work where you don't need a Christmas tree looking camera. Human body doesn't prefer straight lines. Because it's not a robot.
