  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I would love to try that myself...
I'll let you guys know when I get to test one ;)

After reading the spec I am 99 percent certain it will work with no problems.

I thought this might be of interest. I had a client ask me yesterday about rigging an Arrow TX to the ruggedized Marshall Orchid cross converter (HDMI 2 HDSDI, and vice versa). Just add the Paralinx Shield & 2x washers and the Arrow and Orchid all becomes one solid unit. With the Shield you can bolt the Arrow TX almost anywhere.

I just pick up a Lilliput 9.7" HDMI monitor for $400 including tax and shipping from Amazon - it's a Lilliput 969a/o/p. It has a USB 5v out of the back of it and it's configured to take batteries, as well as AC power (12v XLR). I rigged a V-mount plate to the back and tested it - it works great!

The USB 5v out of the back powers the Paralinx receiver, so there's no need to plug into a wall. The monitors quality is great for the price. Really stoked about this....hoping that it's well made enough to last. Check it out.

EDIT: So, just an amendment to this post....it seems that the Lilliput doesn't allow for custom aspect ratios, so it crops the image slightly, which is a bummer. But it's still a cheap solution and a decent enough image to use as a client monitor in a pinch.

Just chiming in with my Paralinx Arrow experience... Monday was my first day of principle photography for a feature and the Paralinx Arrow has been essential to a lot of my shooting setups. I've done a few days of shooting on a lake in a row boat with video village on shore and a scene where I was running with the camera for a handheld chase scene. By having the Arrow transmitting on set, we've saved a lot of time eliminating wrangling/re-routing of monitor cables for each set up and minimized watching playback on set when the shots could be seen in real-time when linking monitor cables would be otherwise unrealistic or impossible for the situation.

I'm still configuring my set-up for it's optimal positioning but every day I've used the Paralinx Arrow I have been a happy DP with how much easier it makes things on set.

Hi Steve. Does that model of Lilliput transfer the image properly? Aspect ratios, data, etc? I tried a 7" model and it cropped my image horizontally and stretched it vertically... Spent $25 in shipping between buying it and returning it for a refund... Just curious about that before I attempt to buy my next inexpensive portable monitor.

Hi All,

Great product Dan, keen to see what you come up with next, I just read through all the 340+ posts and it seems everyone wants a transmitter that has HD-SDI in, can transmit to multiple receivers, has zero latency, has connectors that will not fall out (like hdmi and usb), can be powered by 12v without converters and is not stupidly expensive..... Ummm..... The TeraDeck Bolt does exactly that!!!! just under 2K and available now, HD-SDI looped through the TX, its has the same transmit limitation as the Panalinx Arrow being around 300 feet in ideal conditions, except the TeraDeck has an internal Lipo battery, professional mounting holes, proper lemo connectors on the DC in, besides the distance limitation its what everyone has been asking Dan to make..... I do not own a TeraDeck Bolt I just thought all the guys who are hanging out for a solution should know there are solutions already..

Well first time poster Nathan Tomlinson - you can't own a bolt because it doesn't exist yet.

I think $800 is a fair price for 2 built in cross converters with lithium ion batteries and a Lemo connector...

Also, $1199 is a different price point than $1999. Frankly I think there is a place in the market for both - and I'm sure there will be SOME VERY SHOCKING REVELATIONS WHEN THE BOLT COMES OUT. That's all I can say for now.

A few simple differences for you:

Paralinx is a company started by Two Local 600 Camera Guild Members born and Raised in California.
The Paralinx Arrow is available _NOW_ for $1199 Tx+Rx Set including one P-Tap power cable.
We have widely available solutions for all of the things you are talking about in your post. We have professional mounting, professional power connectors - but we are a company that makes a product for ALL people - whether you are just starting out, or if you are working on a network television show like Modern Family or Justified, or a variety of Feature Films and Commercials around the world that have been using the Arrow since June 2012.

We've never had a single customer complain about cables "falling out" since they are very secure - but besides that we offer the SHIELD - a protective mounting solution for the transmitter that offers a user replaceable HDMI port.

Nathan - you should try our product before you slam it, but if you choose a competitor product that is your choice - and to me that is one of the things that makes America Great.

I don't see where you can purchase a Bolt - but if you walk into Abel Cine, Hot Rod Cameras, EVS in Burbank, or a wide variety of other outlets you can purchase an Arrow tomorrow.

Happy to provide an ARROW for a shootout comparison when there is a competitor product out there that can compete with it. If anyone was at the ET expo this week in Burbank, CA you had the chance to see the Arrow working great with ATOMOS Ninja 2 - we walked the ENTIRE circumference of the show floor and did not drop signal.

Funny how these things always seem to come from first time posters...

Best,

Dan

Hey Nathan

So if i read you right your unhappy that something 1/4 - 1/20 of the price of current SDI transmitters doesn't have SDI? and your comparing it to an unreleased product with an unconfirmed price? Perhaps your missing the point of the Arrow?

i'm sure your aware theres the odd couple of cameras out there earning their keep on legit projects that dont have SDI? and as many cameras with SDI ALSO have HDMI Arrow caters for more cameras out of box than an SDI only unit no? and if you've read all 340+ posts you would have read Dan is looking into a multiple receiver solution.

Not taking ANYTHING away from the Bolt, Im sure it will be terrific and no doubt i'll buy one along with the Arrow I already own.
Lemos are great, no argument there and an internal battery is of some convenience (no info on how long it will run yet) but you'll still need to run dc cables to the Bolt as you cant rely on the internal battery of anything on set.

Anyway I guess im saying perhaps cut Paralinx a break? :-) Yes Arrow has less features but hey its nearly half the price and available now.

Regardless, this situation will change... this is camera tech it's probably already changed as i typed this as i'm sure Paralinx, Teradek and perhaps companies we've yet to hear from aren't sitting on their hands.

Either way we the shooters, owners and renters are the winners and I applaud anyone who gets off their butts to give me more options :-)

Thanks Dan for that condescending reply,

I understand your a bit annoyed someone has pointed out there is a similar product to yours and at no time did I "Slam" your product, I will probably buy one, just keep in mind this is a Red forum not a Paralinx forum so try to keep it polite and not rubbish other companies gear, I do think its great you have worked hard on a link product that looks good to most BUT if you walk around a film set as I am sure you have I think you will see a very distinct lack of HDMI connectors for a good reason, just reinforcing what others have posted on this topic about it being a deal breaker, I think you will find many of your potential customers will happily pay $800 for an integrated system solving problems like 12v input and Lemo connectors for solid reliable power and HD-SDI in, in-fact they would (including me) would probably pay more, I am a bit more than a novice when it comes to RF as I own 4 Link Research HD kits with CCU control, MRC microwave links, Gigawave Gear and a full time microwave relay AS350 Helicopter with Troll Systems Skylink tracking transmit antenna array - which we transmit Zero delay full HD pix over 245 Kilometres (152 Miles) so as far as being a first time poster, I am most likely the most experienced RF "First time poster" you will see on this forum,

I would also be keen to see an ARROW and BOLT shootout, no doubt there is a place for both at the less than $5K price range,

While we are here I would be keen to know if in your next or updated product you will have a removable antenna with an SMA (or similar) connector for those of us who want to extend the range with Amps and higher gain antennas? I have seen reviews saying the range is about 200-300 feet under ideal conditions but whats the actual antenna under the plastic of the Arrow? if I purchased the Arrow and pulled the cover off the TX and RX what antenna connector would I find? what are the options here?

I do notice my post has given you another opportunity to plug the Arrow and its benefits which is a good thing, I would love to demo one but according to your website you do not have a Distributer in Australia yet,

Anyway good luck with what looks like a great product.

From your (Probably) least favourite first time poster

Hi Jason,

Not at all unhappy as I mentioned in another post I will probably buy one, I did read through the 350 odd posts and saw many people come and look at this forum and comment on wanting other features like transmitting to multiple receivers, HD-SDI in and solid connectors, I understand Dan and the Paralinx team are working on it just as I assume TeraDek are, I just wanted to point out and inform other Forum users that there is another option being advertised, I also pointed out I did not own one,

I think there needs more guys like Dan developing products like the Arrow, and the more posts on forums like this will keep it advertised and in front of the rite people, - at no cost to Dan I mite point out,

Nathan Tomlinson

Dan, I think your product is pretty nice for the price point. Looking forward to work with it more on up-coming shoots.

Kudos to you & your team.

I too am happy with my Paralinx Arrow for the pricepoint. I would welcome built-in SDI connectivity and some other niceties, but for the money this is a great little unit. Used it on a live redcarpet event recently and couldn't be happier. Yes, I had to use SDI converters on both ends...fortunately I already owned them. If I had to buy them, it would eat up the price advantage of the Arrow over the Bolt, and of course a nice neat package without extra dangling wires would have been good.

But, as has been pointed out, the Bolt is not yet released and the Arrow is. I look forward to Dan's "gen2" efforts, and am curious about the Bolt, but I don't regret my Arrow purchase for a minute.

Not to derail the thread. Just wondering, why is it that manufacturer are so keen on putting HDMI on their stuff? HDSDI with embeded audio seems so much better. Is it the motherboards of the consumer HDMI's that is way cheaper or what is the reason?

How to

How to

I just want to take a second to reflect on our position in the industry and who we are.

First - I'd like to say PARALINX has nothing to gain by igniting a sense of "war" in our industry.

We have no interest in establishing an antagonistic US vs. THEM war with other people. There are a variety of solutions out there in the market, and over time there will be more competition as there is in any marketplace.

The reason we started PARALINX was to make a tool that we as cameramen would like to use ourselves - We think HD-SDI and LEMO connectors are great - but there are many people who don't have access to SDI equipment, or Lemos, or even P-Taps. You could say that the connectors we are using are "flawed" because they are not "pro" connectors - but one of our goals was accessibility to anyone for our first product.

Our primary interest is in providing ENABLING technology to Filmmakers. We hope to make set life easier and more fun by giving people access to cool new tools.

Some have said I can be Hyperbolic - I think sometimes tone is a hard thing to read on the internet - and oftentimes what can be read as Sarcasm is really my sense of humor. I'm actually a super mellow friendly guy and we wish the best to Filmmakers and Technology Innovators all around.

Apologies if my snark seemed a bit heavy in previous posts.

Cheers to Friends and Best Regards,

Dan Kanes
