In my search for Panavision or PL (alternate) mount ideas for the Epic or Scarlet, I came across this great video demonstrating the Panavision glass on the One;

https://vimeo.com/29588147

I don't think the biggest "film only" snob could tell you that this is "HD" footage.

Panavision glass is used with Red cameras on a daily basis all over the world. They have quite a few Epics which are working hard especially during this season :)

where does one find panavision glass to buy? i have no idea...
Panavision glass (and cameras) are rental only. They have PV mounted Epic's available for rental as well. You can get PV mounts for DSMC from that one european guy that makes hella camera mounts on eBay.

Panavision has a current policy of not renting glass without also renting the ( any brand ) camera with their mount as well. I believe all of the RED products that Panavision has are consigned.

Yeah I know about the "rental only" policy of PV, but I'm sure there's some floating around somewhere - hard to believe they've kept 100% of all the glass they produced. I want to OWN some PV glass!

Although it might just be an urban legend, supposedly some years back a Panavision camera and a set of lenses went "missing" off a truck in Hollywood. Weeks later, when the thieves realized that Panavision's closed ecosystem meant they could never sell it, they left it in some bushes at PV's offices.

Since when? I just rent lenses from PV without a body.... I could see why they'd do that, to ensure backfocus and flange depth are accurate, but I've rented just lenses with no problem.

If you ever see any Panavision equipment for sale, don't buy...

Some are some are not.

Most new costumers get the body + PV glass rental policy. Other's do not. It's pretty much up to them.

2 I worked on coming up..
Flight and "42" both shot by Don Burgess and operated by his son...
RE: Panavision.. buy a mount for your camera, and go ahead and rent a full package from them.. thus you get 2 bodies and can shoot 2 camera...

Though I will heretically say...
1) Panavision's true beauty is best seen by your 1st AC.... their gear works so well and smoothly..
2)They do have wonderful anamorphic glass.. but otherwise I do not feel they have a specific look to their spherical glass. It is just plain good quality with decent color matching across sets..

as with any rental use.. go and look at your rental package at their shop.. evaluate them in person to make the set match your needs. That is part of the customer service you are paying for, and they are VERY good at it.

And by all means, tell them you are doing your first project with them.. they are likely to try even harder to get you accustomed to their system.

And.. if you are already renting top quality lenses, the body is a minor rental item.. you want to shoot their glass, get the full tech support and well matched gear to go with it!

If you really really want to "own" the look of Panavision lenses, I read somewhere (I think on here) that Leica R lenses are made with the same type of glass.

Ok. First of all PV has Epics and PV mounts for all of them.

We are using 3 PV Epics with PV mounts on Arrested Development.

Panavision Primo spherical lenses are designed by Iain Neal using special Leica glass that is not a standard Leica product. [/SIZE]

I was a Propmaster for many years and had always heard that there was a non written policy at panavision of a 10,000.00 bounty on someone being caught and prosecuted for selling their rental lenses. I have rented their gear as props, but have never tried to rent a lens by itself , I don't see why they wouldn't , they have some big overhead there

You tend to really appreciate those long barrel throws and meticulous distance markings on their telephoto glass though. Pulling someone walking towards camera on a 300mm. gah!

Ah, did not know that. Thanks for clearing that up. :)
