  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic going towards 8K to the masses...

I think this is very promising. We won't see this tomorrow, but it's a sign of progress. The cool thing is that RED actually has an 8K sensor available today. No, sorry, *two* 8K sensors. Take your pick. ;-)

I will agree that 4K is a good compromise between quality and file size, so this technology should filter down to lower resolution sensors eventually.

If you guys recall, and I'll dig up the post eventually, when I said there's other ways to "do a motion mount", this is exactly on the nose of what I was talking about in terms of electronic ND at the sensor level.

This is a brutal achievement. Hats off to Panasonic team.

Saturation levels are a huge increase and should do wonders for highlight range. It will be interesting to see how the whole DR mapping turns out.
Great to see new organic film sensor tech gaining momentum.

Btw...123dB....about 20 stops.

Looks like enough. :)

Game on! and Geezus:
• Panasonic holds 135 Japanese patents and 83 overseas patents (including pending) related to this technology
• 8K resolution, 60fps framerate, 450k saturation electrons and global shutter function are realized simultaneously.
• Switching between high sensitivity mode and high saturation mode is possible using gain switching function.
• The ND filter function can be realized steplessly by controlling the voltage applied to the OPF.
• This kind of sensor can be expected to be used by the future GH6

Wonder how many bits are needed for linear coding. 40? :smile5:

As far as I know 20. :)

21 actually for 123 dB.

But I'd rather go with 16 bit log....

The big deal (for me at least) is the GLOBAL SHUTTER... (extremely useful for reality-capture).

The handling of areas of shade and simultaneous over exposure seem very impressive almost unbelievable to look at/uncanny.

Who knows before it goes mainstream into things we can run with/play with.

@Emanuel A. Thanks for grabbing that.

Just to capture that range - yes. But banding free, so that Weber fraction never goes >1%? I think not.
But I'd rather go with 16 bit log....

Hm...if You "log" it in the analogue domain, electronically, before the ADC, then yes, I think 16 bit is enough. :smile5:

Banding with 20bits ? Not sure about the quantizing overhead, that part is not my domain so avoiding precise statements. :)

I meant 16 bits for the recording. After the ADC. 16 bits are dense enough for acrylic post feel and I don't need linear for post. Plus additional data sizes. Though I wouldn't mind 20/22/24 bit codec if it doesn't cripple the workflow.

It's not just 20 bits, it's 20 bits for 20 stops of light which is insufficient for banding free (Weber <1%) linear coding. Needs bigger ADCs... :smile5:

Got it.

Linear in post is different thing, but yes.

Let's wait and see. :smile5:

8k coming to consumer from Panasonic has been known for some time. This sensor has been under development for years. Weeded hoping for the 8k GH last year.

its gonna be 8k on avchd for sure lolz, nothing can beat r3d speeds... funny wishful thinking panies.

Lol! Not likely Pannie would could give better than EVA1 support on GH anytime soon? They can't even put raw in EVA1 or 12 or 14 bit 4:2:2. Why are people interested in that camera? It has a characteristic the normal GH should have, except the GH should have 12-14 bit recording aswell.

But, if this new 8k camera can have 12-14 bit 4:2:2 HDR BT2100 color space support with 20 stops, that is still pretty good to use.

Your not the first one. Around 2004/2005 I was looking into ways f doing it. Then I spotted an electronic shutter which could run at incredible rates. So, I contemplated that fir dialable ND and I think global shutter. I contemplated the sort by f scegeme here, but settled for a better technique which some other manufacturer announced since.

It was to have a variable density filter per pixel. Basically a plane that darkened per pixel based on intensity of light. So, 20 stops would have been possible, maybe 30+ stops. Now days I'm feeling well enough to manipulate constructs in my head and model lens designs and photon paths, for
some interesting lens design stuff. I might be able to do something better one day. But I've got a snazy ND design I'm looking at.

Now, other things about the sensor. I have a feeling it is not going to be all cream like people think. Please there are pre-existing technology versions of sober these things.

Already 20 stop car crash cams. The Omron isg technology used in the highest latitude years ago, was available in over 30 stops I think. That technology had be progressing since the 70's.

Auto gain on pixels, is what smalcamera company did nearly twenty years ago for HDR. The images from that sensor in the camera I have, are like the black mahlgic pocket, but with HDR. Silky, complementary like and a bit like ungraded raw. But great for those times on a real cheap credit card camera (70MB+/s data rate off chip from memory, in a 720p like version). Real tastey, you could do a film ungraded with that sort of image (maybe a bit like Hercules in New York, but with HDR and less grain. Sorry, the artist in me coming out again. Down spot, down foul spot.

Well, the vacuum cleaner is competing for mind space here and I'm not the best after slipping over and brushing my self up today. So I'll quit. But no guys, they aren't freakishly new images, this sort of stuff has been out there before.

The Olympics 2020 Tokyo is basically in the capital city of camera manfacturing as generally perceived by the world. So there could be an accelerated drive for leaps in tech against each other with the extra dimesion of pride at stake. I have visited Reduser on and off over the years and recall some of the early gags about the 4K party which no one else seems to know about, but I don't think the Japanese are quite ready to cede their historical mantra to anyone. If an 8K GH6 with a Cineform codec ever launched, would it not essentially be a Red.....made by Panasonic ? It is fascinating to see Red appearing to partner with China to take down Japan. Brutal stuff, quite entertaining if I'm truly honest, and I guess the winner will be the user.

I'm not sure you can say there is any Nation v Nation in a high tech arena. Cute idea for Olympics 'n stuff but the age of the Multi-National Corp is well established.

BTW: When reading the BI chart, Qualcomm is very much a San Diego company with fab done in China. China has very little actual economic value add to an iPhone
