  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Our latest RED Reel...

Right, this is a serious question - why is it that some Scarlet stuff looks horrible and some, like this, looks absolutely gorgeous? Is it mostly down to a lot of people not post processing it properly? Nice one Patrick, should be used as a sales advert for Red!

Looks gorgeous! Quick question, what are your compression settings and what are you using? I've tried compressing through tons of programs but every time it seems that it looks fine on the computer but after Vimeo and Youtube does it's processing, everything seems way darker and all my hours of color correcting go to waste.

Had to make a new reel for a job. Here is the result.

A collection of shots from our work over the last 6 months.

All shot with the Scarlet. Contax Zeiss and a Canon 70-200.

Colored in DaVinci.

Hey Patrick, gorgeous stuff! Good to see you using those Contax to good effect. I'd notice that Contax flare anywhere.

You using both AE's and MM's?

I'm noticing that the older AE's flare whiter and nicer than the MMs. Have you noticed this?

The MM's resist flare "better", but when you overpower them with direct light a lot of mine fall apart into zeiss-ian purple splotches.

You notice this too?

The old ones have the ninja-star, but flare is oh-so-nice!

I've double checked though - and all AE's and MM's color match perfectly, btw. Except some of the really old AE's have a teensy bit of green in the whites, that's easily lifted out in post. You'd never notice unless you pixel peeped.

Anyway - I digress from this thread. Great work and reel as always!!!

Thanks Steve.

I think it is a combination of a bunch of different factors but overall I think you are right when you say that most people fall over in the post process. The RAW files are amazing but if you don't know what you are doing things can go very wrong very fast. Not that the footage wont look ok but it definitely wont reach its full potential.

Bummer about the compression thing. I've never experienced a gamma shift when uploading to vimeo. First thing I would check is your monitor(s). If that is all sweet then it must be in the files you are feeding to those sites.

I finish everything in Premiere and After Effects. Color done in DaVinci. That is where I go from R3D to DPX.

Adobe media encoder is what I use for the finish. I've got a custom h.264 mp4 set up.
my settings are:

Framerate: whatever
Progressive
Profile: Main
Level: 5.1
Render at Maximum Depth ticked
Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 pass
Target {Mbps}: 7
Maximum: 20
and finally the Use Maximum Render Quality box is checked.

That is it.

Hope that helps.

Yeah I'm using both AEs and MMs.

I was very surprised at how well they matched up. Looking back at a few shots I definitely prefer the flare on the AEs.

It looks great...are you using any of the Contax zooms?

-P

Patrick, I know it's very affordable, but the Contax 80-200 F4 zoom is kinda awesome. Very sharp, and LOOKS great. I know the 70-200 is AWESOME, but for whenever you need something that matches your primes exactly, and has a great focus throw, give that one a shot. Don't let the price fool you.

Best

Lovely. The colors give me all warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
