  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If I buy a high bright LCD which does HD 720 from another mfg. will it still show the overlay info that is shown on the red LCD. In other words are these capabilities in the lcd or in the body?

Yes and no. We did some testing a Koerner yesterday about this. The overlays are there, as are the menus, BUT they are cropped off by the bottom of the screen.

False color works fine, but the rest like of the overlays display their information below the crop line.

From what I've been told Red uses the HDMI signal as the master signal, and then just crops pixel rows for the 720 SDI outputs. I think this is temporary.

I know your thinking steadicam, IMHO the red LCD is so damn light it would be pretty negligible to just leave it on the camera for checking stuff like the overlays.

As presently constituted, no HD-SDI monitor is going to show the menus, the histograms, the focus assist, the waveform, or any of that stuff.

If you want to see those things, you have three choices and only three choices, and only two of those are readily available:
1) the Red LCD
2) the Red EVF (not readily available yet)
3) a computer monitor.

Now, the good news is that Siniarch's "Carrion" monitor is designed as a low-cost onboard LCD that has been tested and shown to work with the HDMI feed so it does show all the menus. But you can't expect that to happen from any regular HD-SDI monitor. The only way that could happen is if Red changed their engineering to either output 1080 over the SDI port, or to change where and how they overlay the menus.

Interesting Barry - do you know if the Carrion HD-SDI model will show those as well? Presumably it will if you go in over HDMI, but not if you feed it HD-SDI?

Good news, as I'd like to go with the Carrion over the Red, simply as it's non-proprietary.

What kind of viewing angle does this Carrion have? How bright is it for outdoor use? Do you guys know of any reviews on it?

thanks

No monitor will show the menus and other displays over HD-SDI. It's not possible, unless Red makes the changes to their system as outlined above.

Through HDMI it outputs 1280x848. Through HD-SDI it outputs 1280x720. The Red does not send the menu info through its HD-SDI, so no HD-SDI monitor can display them. Only an HDMI monitor, or the Red LCD/EVF, can display them.

(and by HDMI, I'm also including DVI because you can get a simple HDMI->DVI adapter)

Barry that is incorrect, The Red (build 14) does send the menu information out, it just gets cropped in half so It's unusable. I saw it with my own eyes yesterday.

I'm hoping that currently this is just a stop gap measure till they change how the SDI is output.

Well, that's what I mean. The stuff is not sent in a way that any HD-SDI monitor could view it. It was that way in build 13 as well. For HD-SDI output the take the central 1280x720 out of the full 1280x848 and send that out. All the menus, waveforms, audio meters, shutter readouts, focus assist (not focus overlay, but focus assist), histograms, all that stuff is kept in the 128 pixels that don't get sent out over HD-SDI.

Point is: HD-SDI = no menus (that you can use). HDMI = menus (*if* your monitor supports the 1280x848 display mode).

Yeah, figured that - I guess I didn't phrase my question very well. I was really asking if the HD-SDI monitor still has HDMI inputs that we can use to view the uncropped menus.

I've just asked siniarch himself (or herself?) on another thread, so might be a moot point now...

If anyone's interested I'll post the answer here - I'm just thinking it'd be nice to not have two LCD monitors on the camera, and also - of course - it'd be nice not to have to pay for two!

OK so, in case anyone else is having the same thoughts as me, the HD-SDI version of the Carrion does still have HDMI inputs, so you can choose whichever input you want - clean over HD-SDI or with overlays etc via HDMI.

That's me sold, Carrion it is - the best of both worlds, and a monitor I can use on other cameras to boot...

Is it light enough for steadicam work?

who sells this carrion???? That truly sounds strange....
Anyone know someone at Transvideo they should look at this thread!!! for the sake of their sales to a pretty big market?

Darren - pass, I've not used it personally.

There's a thread in off topic discussing it - both Luis (U/N siniarch, from LS Design) and Sam Druckerman, who provided the testing cam and has obviously spent some time on it are on that thread - maybe ask them?

TJ - LS Designs make them (www.lsdsgn.com). Heard a lot of very good things about them. They're an indie company, but look good. I'm definitely getting one, but it'll be 6-7 weeks from now by the sounds of things - I'll post my findings once I've got my hands on it...
