Oscar Nominations 2013

Just click through on each link and check out the technical specs.

More Alexa this year.

Ah - OK :)

Not much of a RED year this time...

Three of the best picture nominees were shot on Alexa (3 out of 9), three of the best foreign language films were shot on Alexa (3 out of 5), two of the best cinematography nominees were filmed on Alexa (2 out of 5). I think the Hobbit, Hitchcock and Prometheus received some technical awards but it looks like the Alexa dominated this year. David Fincher didn't make a film this year so no nominations for the Red camp.

Also, there is a pretty good chance that either Skyfall of Life of Pi will win for cinematography so its like it will be two in a row for the Alexa.

Benh Zeitlin nominated for best director this year with his first feature movie guess it must be record.so happy to see Beast of the Southern Wild got nominated

As much as I love Roger Deakins work, how did Skyfall get nominated for Best Cinematography???? I'm sure I'm in the minority here.

yes i was suprised with that nomination also and i would be very said if he gets award with Skyfall..

Can't believe Lincoln was nominated for 12 awards. I mean I can believe it, it's the "Oscars", but I still can't believe it. Daniel Day Lewis was great, not Lincoln.

As for Life of Pi, that was a beautiful film. I would pick Life of Pi over Skyfall for best Cinematography.

I knew Skyfall would be nominated. All critics lavished praise on the cinematography and labeled it "the best looking Bond ever" so the whole thing skyrocketed out of proportion a bit when the movie became also the highest grossing Bond ever, you could make a case that the cinematography was responsible for the film's success, as this is how things work in the minds of Academy voters. It had its moments definitely, gorgeous lighting and the Deakins touch all around. It will probably win too, in typical Academy irony, as they can't, or shouldn't, snub Deakins 10 times in a row. Unfairly as Life of Pi is the best cinematography of that bunch. It will be a toss between the two, with both cinematographers highly praising the Alexa for the look of their films. I remember when Claudio Miranda posted on this forum, and our friend Sanjin and co. ran him out of here for good...

On another note, I think two of the Best Foreign Films are shot on R1 MX? Kon Tiki in particular looked simply awesome!

I'm a bit surprised Cloud Atlas got no nominations, as well as Flight not getting a best film nomination. Les Miserables is overrated, but Hugh Jackman and Hattaway deserved the nominations. I think the Hobbit got punished for the 48fps, since its 3D cinematography was one of the best ever seen. I'm another fan of Skyfall's cinematography and think its truly deserved, but, again, that speaks more of the cinematographer than the camera ( even though he is quite vocal towards the Alexa).

Parts of Skyfall was RED (chopper shots), Hitchcock, Hobbit, Flight, probably plenty more on the list - RED in short time has been doing some major game changing moves, rock on Jim and Jarred.

I need to see it again, but my fist impression didn't wow me. Actually I couldn't get over the scene where Bond sees the TV in the beach-bar and decides to return. The exterior was completely blown out...??!!

bet he didnt shot that scene 2nd unit DP Alexander Witt shot it (%99)

Incorrect on the bar scene.

Deakins forum from Roger Deakins:

"I was lucky with that bar scene as we had some cloud cover for a few hours in the morning and the wide silhouette shot came in nicely. I think that shot would not have worked had the sun came out, which it did about 5 min after we made the shot. The image you see is pretty much what I exposed. I obviously lit the closer shots to balance the background, which was by that time in full sun. The contrast range came in to what you see with the regular LUT I use on set and throughout the entire work flow."

Personally I liked it - the blinding hangover light captured the sense of the party being over and Bond's declining mental state. Choices like that make the difference between someone being an unthinking technical slave or a man who is invited year after year to compete for an Oscar in my opinion.
