  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Original EVF on Epic?

The old EVF I have did not work with the original FW that came with the Epic X. When I installed 6.44 the old EVF started working flawlessly. Now with 6.46 the old EVF works but I have to plug it in a few times for it to kick in (I get flashing red) whereas in 6.44 it would work on start-up. I'm just glad it works! I'm oldschool and prefer an EVF (especially outdoors in the sun). None of the user buttons seem to work except for brightening the image. I'm able to use the old EVF cable as well as the cable that came with the 5" touchscreen with no problems.

Well, it's seems, odly enough, it's also a cable issue. I recently tested an original EVF on our Epic-X, with the old cable the EVF came with, there was no image, but when we used the new cable I received with my 5.0 touch screen LCD, lo and behold, the original EVF worked. We then tried another older cable, and same thing, while these cables work on a Red One, with both the original EVF and the Bomb EVF. Dont ask me why!

Cheers,
Damien

Hi Damien, sorry to miss you last week.

My old evf cables work with my old evf on my epic. Go figure... My old cables work with the new bomb as well and I prefer them to the new stiffer ones. After having shot a couple of projects over the past month I also prefer the Loupe I built that snaps on to the touch screen lcd, over the EVF.
Perhaps it is old school and a bit funky but it works so well it is kind of unbelievable. I have also been working with the canon eos mount on the epic and to see critical focus you can not beat the loupe.

Best, Peter

How are you mounting the old evf on the Epic. Just curious as there are many threads to mount the bomb EVF but not the old EVF. How about image quality? I've read that the image quality of the evf is wors on the EPIC than on the old Red one.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I have the Viewfactor FMJ Epic X top plate and am using the ET EVF mount attached to that... the same EVF mount I used with the Red One. The EVF looks great with the Epic... no reduction in quality that I can see.

Thank you for this post. I'd previously tried my original EVF with an EPIC M a couple months ago and it didn't work no matter what we tried.

Just received our EPIC X with the new camera firmware and the Original EVF now works, but only if I plug in the cable AFTER I power the camera on.

Good to know!

Pleased to hear that Ken!
I'm just hoping that mine will work with my old cables.
Always been pleased with the quality on R1, so long as it is set to open gate.
Planning on using the Zacuto mount for it once I've worked out how to mount top bars.

Update:
My original EVF does work with Epic v3.0.0, v3.0.7 and v3.2.19.
The quality is not as good as it was with Red One though IMO - it seems to posterize the image slightly, and the HUD text looks very aliasy :(

on my epic. Some image splitting at times, solved by unplugging/replugging. Image quality looks about the same, but informations all around are real ugly, real cheap in comparison, applying to lcd, though. I even have some trouble checking on the noise/clip bars, when the level is very low... Can't understand that backward move...
