  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Original EVF on Epic?

I was told it was not, and confirmed by Camtec (when I asked they tried it out) that the original EVF didn't work on an Epic-M, currently...

I'd need to dig up the exact quote, but this came in the last month or so. The plan was to make a small rear module with e-SATA interface and appropriate LEMO connector, so DRIVE/RAID could be hooked up to EPIC/Scarlet.

A month or so ago, Jarred posted that RED had decided not to build this module, and would instead offer a discount on SSA storage for people who traded in RED DRIVEs. Until RED, or a 3rd party, come up with an alternative, SSA is the only storage option for EPIC. Or perhaps, CF cards via a CF to SSA adapter card which has been mentioned.

To be fair, SSA is probably by far the best choice for the vast majority of people. For me however it's a bummer; maybe a 3rd party will produce an e-SATA adapter if the demand is there. My biggest issue is the cost per GB of SSA. For $900 I can get 64GB SSA; precisely one tenth of the 640GB RED DRIVE I can (could) get for the same money. The price per GB for SSA storage *HAS* to fall far & fast if it's to compete with spinning media. Fortunately Moore's law assures us that it will! Once 512GB SSA = $1k, that's problem solved for me.

Think you mean SSD instead of SSA???

Good catch Mike.

Hard to keep up!
I'll gladly trade in my drives for SSD!
Great news actually.

Oooops. I was living in IBM RAID land for a moment there... I've just been fixing my mainframe, which uses SSA (Serial Storage Architecture) drives!

I use the 7" and 5" Red LCD's on Epic, the EVF should work too. I can test Monday.

sorry for delay, Epic-M been staying busy. Original EVF not working with current build. Not sure if its hw or fw issue.

I'm wondering if this still holds true with later firmware.
Can anyone confirm?

It's an *EVF* firmware issue. Some original EVFs work with EPIC. Many don't. For those that don't, RED has developed an updated EVF firmware which will fix the problem. You have to send the EVF back to RED for the firmware to be upgraded; it can't be done in the field. Contact RED.

The above is all as I understand it from posts I've read; if I'm wrong please correct me!

Well, it's seems, odly enough, it's also a cable issue. I recently tested an original EVF on our Epic-X, with the old cable the EVF came with, there was no image, but when we used the new cable I received with my 5.0 touch screen LCD, lo and behold, the original EVF worked. We then tried another older cable, and same thing, while these cables work on a Red One, with both the original EVF and the Bomb EVF. Dont ask me why!

Cheers,
Damien

I believe the deal here in the uk is £300 back when you purchase a 256gig card.

Not sure what happens to my other drive though, I sure can't afford two such SSDs in a hurry..
