Hello guys,

Just curious ... based on Jim's recent announcements, it seems that the SOONEST a Stage 3 person would be able to purchase an Epic, Epic-A or Scarlet is April of next year, and possibly later.

Is this interpretation of the dates accurate?

I ask because I'm sharing a Red One with one of my business partners -- we have a fairly low serial number (1079, I believe) and I have about $15,000 already budgeted for the stage 3 trade-in/upgrade + accessories.

I was hoping for something January/Feb but that seems unrealistic now. I think the machined Epics will be filling by then and maybe Stage 2 will be just underway. Does anyone think it will be before April/May before Stage 3 orders start getting filled?

Also, I wonder if Red will still allow a "trade in" option for those who want the Epic-A (or "light") -- even if the brain for this camera is less than the $17,500 credit they are offering for the Red One.

For example, I'm imagining a scenario where the new brain is $12,000 or so -- and then Red still allowed us to use this Red One credit for the Epic-A/Light and perhaps use the excess balance for other accessories. That would be SO AWESOME!!! Probably not realistic but I would be jumping for joy in that scenario ... as it would probably allow me to afford a Red Pro prime set along with the lighter Epic ......

Just curious what everyone else thinks of these issues ...

Stage 2.5???

Stage 2.5???

I'm going to put this here as it seems it may have been in the wrong thread originally.

A while back Jim, you mentioned that some kind of stage 2.5 option was "under consideration" (post #37 in Q & A thread) for those stage 3 people who purchased the MX recently so they could maybe keep their red one MX or at least recoup some of the MX upgrade cost. I know this will probably flare the stage 2 fire... but I'm going to ask...

Jim is this still being considered?

An option that takes into account the fact that some stage 3 owners may have just recently upgraded to MX to maintain viable marketability on themselves and their red one's in their respective markets... a sizable investment without knowing the timetable we know now. I think many forget that upgrading the MX in some places may have been market driven in order to keep the camera renting while waiting for Epic... its not always a personal choice by the owner.

I ask because I think it would help some of us in the affore-mentioned "stage 3 MX boat" make some near term financial decisions. Knowing that there was a way to maintain or recoup the investment we made in the the MX upgrade either buy being able to keep our upgraded RED ones and pay a larger trade-up... or recoup some of the MX cost could make purchasing decisions a bit easier.

stage 2.5. can be epic light with a 12% discount :)
i guess epic light will cost 10 k -12 k usd and can shoot 60 fps at 5k.
but dunno.

Anthony - one thing you might have overlooked is the time frame for the Scarlet. With Jim's recent comments, it seems plausible to me that Scarlet won't necessarily be that far behind the initial Epics. Of course, that is an optimistic view and there will be plenty of people who will go out of their way to point out that I am crazy (or worse). But, IMO, we "regular" guys may have a Scarlet in our hands sooner than pretty much anything else.

Just yesterday Jim said:

Scarlet 8X Fixed is nearly done. I like it. So does everyone here.

Not going to happen Anthony ;)

For the Scarlett series (possibly including the newly re-named Epic "Lite) there is only a 12% discount allowance,
for those that have not executed their Red One cameras in Stage II or 3 or 3.5.

@ Ketch, thanks man. Yah I kinda figured that -- Red is already being so generous allowing any trade in at all -- so giving a credit that exceeds the cost of the new "Epic Light" camera might be a little too much to ask. Oh well then, since I've already co-invested in a Red One with one of my partners, it probably makes more sense to pay the extra $10,000 in Stage 3 and get a fully loaded Epic. It's an amazing deal. This is assuming the price hasn't changed for the Epic Stage 3 package ....

@ Terry, you might be right. Intuitively it makes sense .... with all these potential Scarlet users chomping at the bit (including Epic stage 2 holders) -- I don't think Red will be upsetting ANYONE by releasing the Scarlet fixed asap ... even if they got it out before Stage 2 Epics I don't think anyone would complain much.

Well, actually there will ALWAYS be people who complain, but yah I could easily envision a scenario (if it was ready) where the Scarlet fixed came out at the same time as Epics. Given enough supply, almost everyone would be overjoyed about that.
