  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Optimo 30-80 or Canon 30-105?

I agree on the gorgeous look of the angie...but which one has less breathing?

Angie DP 30-80
Canon 30-105
Alura 30-80
Zeiss 28-80 (I assume its full frame design is not the best to minimize breathing...)

??
anyone who tried 'em all? ;)

Haven't been able to try them all. The Angie 30-80 hardly breathes at all--less even than some of the Ultra Prime focal lengths it would cover. Its exceptionally nice. The others might be similar though--I don't know

the Zeiss CZ 28-80mm that I played with at NAB was ruthlessly sharp. Extremely impressive. I went over the stills I grabbed from it and I don't think it looks really like the Optimos, the Canons, or the Fujinon. It's something different on it's own.

The one Canon 30-105mm I saw and tested was pretty impressive.

Thanks Phil, I'd have really liked to meet you guys at NAB!
So the 28-80 is almost too clinical like the Aluras? But probably with a better bokeh and higher microcontrast, right?
The Canon 30-105 is smooth like the Angie? What about breathing? What do you mean exactly with impressive? ;)

Cannon 30-105

Cannon 30-105

Hey all. I have been trying to fill the hole of a leightweight zoom with a good range that would cut acceptably with master primes. Having tested them all and spent time talking with Mitch Gross as well as some other seasoned DP's I bought a new Cannon 30-105 today. In this group I found the Cabrio to be the most versatile (one lens you may not need to take off on some jobs) that responds beautifully to situations like on old 2/3"eng lens. There is no question this is a serious path to be considered for future entries in this group by manufacturers. The added macro function truly makes it an eng workhorse like we have never seen in the PL mount world. Having said that its $40k and optically I though it was just ok. Amazing for the versatility but a trade off optically from other lenses at this price point. I can understand the demand for this lens but preffered to aim a little higher optically. The DP rouge series 30-80, etc are excellent. Buttery smooth with that creamy almost cooke look to them thats very cinematic and organic. These lenses definitely have the most personality and the gearing is excellent. Great prices available now too since they are not as popular as they once were. Enter the cannon 30-105 the lens I didnt want to buy. It has fantastic range up to 105mm, MOD is inside 2' at 105mm making it almost a super clean macro. The image is SHARP. Easily the sharpest lens of this groups (this was supposedly confirmed by bench testing and edge to edge analysis as well). It had the best build of the group as well and was extremely well thought out. The gears angling away from the operator so you can see witness marks while operating is brilliant. Its pretty fast at a 2.8 throughout the range and has no perciptible breathing (althou im told it exists its just not readily evident. So long story short yea I wanted to buy a name (bmw. mercedes) but found best performance and value was in this Cannon 30-105mm. They all have their purposes and strengths so you really cant go terribly wrong in my opinion. Cheers!

A couple weeks ago I shot charts of both the 30-105 and the new Compact Zoom 70-200

Both prior to testing are these oddball situations in my mind...the Canon because they are just getting into cine zooms (again) after a 20 year hiatus, and the Zeiss because it's just ergonomically off the beaten path and because it SEEMS like a rehoused older design. Later research is telling me it is not.

Anyway, both charted out very, very well in my very quick, very unscientific go at them. The only thing I can say for sure is that my longstanding theory that newer designs will almost always trump older designs, just due to manufacturing advances. Both were sharper than anything I've compared them to in last couple weeks.

The only thing that I'm not sure if I like about the Canon is that it seems to be tuned in a way that favors these warm colors in high contrast edges. It almost looks like CA, but it's too consistent. It's not something you'd ever see or notice when using, just something apparent on a chart. That and the lens as a whole is warm too. So far I'm chalking it up to the coatings, but I'm no expert and really can't say.

I can confirm what Phil says above about the new Zeiss Compact Zooms, at least the one I had 30 minutes with. They appear to be ruthlessly sharp. Again, I'm no expert but I certainly can't argue when he says they might be in their own world in a sense.

For me it's going to come down to, do I want a path to 200mm in a lightweight format? 105 is the longest I need 97% of the time, but if I go Zeiss cz.2, I'll have to get both the 28-80 and 70-200 as I can't be stuck at 80mm. Tough choice.

Nate,
if the files were developed in the same way, the canon is less contrasty!!! right?
guys have a look at the 2k grabs on flickr @ full res...
seems like the zeiss has high contrast photo lenses coatings...
are they breathing the same or is the canon better at it since it's not a full frame design?

is it the same mega sharpness/contrast combo you have observed for for the 28-80, right Phil?

There's a chance that exposure and then adjustment is influencing that a little bit. But yeah, I'd say the Zeiss definitely held more contrast. At least at 2.8

I felt like I was in such a rush, I forgot to slow down and check out flares and breathing. Nothing jumped out at me on either, which probably means both Canon & Zeiss were pretty good, not breathing enough to notice.
