I'm considering adding a blue streak filter to my arsenal, but so far I can only find Optefex making them, and they are spendy ($480 for a 4x5.65!)

Has anyone used them? Is the quality they impart better than just using the Red Giant flare plugin? It seems 2mm is the go-to size, is that right?

I know David Mullen bought the 3mm earlier this year but I can't find if he actually used it (David, if you see this, would love to know).

Thanks.

I shot this on Red one MX

Very cool look and it is way better than the Red Giant plugin.

Red is also pretty interesting. I would suggest buying a 5x5 so you can turn the streak if need be.

I bought one of these in 4x565 blue from the filter gallery a couple years ago for about $800 at the time- good to see them drop in price, really enjoyed it but I don't use it much anymore. I would be willing to sell it to you if your interested: hunter@hunterhrichards.com

Thanks!! What strength (1, 2, 3mm) was that?

I own the Obox and I love it, but it can't take 5x5s. Plus, if you rotate it, it's a perfect giveaway that it's not a anamorphic.

Hey Hunter! Good to see you again, but 1 post? I could have sworn you posted here before. Anyways, what mm do you own?

Thanks Jim, I made that last year, is was the last shoot for me on red one with my steadicam! My back is great full!

Shawn i am sure it was a 1mm but i will let you know tomorrow.

I have blue, red and clear in 1mm. I think any thicker then the flares become a bit much.

Also try not to use a lens any wider than 25mm, otherwise the flare size is a bit short and looks wrong. The longer the lens the better the flare

I bought the 1mm blue after testing. Link to test is below if anyone is interested in the the difference in the 1mm,2mm,3mm. optefx doesn't make them anymore according to there sales. Contact stan at the filter gallery in NYC, they can custom make you it to your size/color.

I love Optefex's 'Spacing guide' hmm to buy.

(err maybe its me but is there any real difference?)

Can we still buy these new? I can't seem to find them anywhere...

Well to me the difference is the amount of spread of the highlight into the streak - the 1mm has the greatest spread as the manufacturer has specified.

I own the 2mm blue streak filter in 4x5.65. I'd recommend not stopping down below a 2.8 on wider focal lengths and using the rear filter tray, otherwise you will start to see the vertical lines. As someone else mentioned earlier, it works better on longer lenses. The flare is a tad hard edged for me, I'd prob combine it with a Classic Soft or Smoque filter to smooth it out.

I picked up mine of Abel cine about this time last year. Cant seem to find them now on there unfortunately. love the filters though

This is awesome specific info. Thanks Adam. I've been looking at these for a while...
