Hey guys, hopefully this isnt posted in the wrong spot but I am about to get a Scarlet W and already have a SmallHD 702 High Bright and dont really want a touch screen as well.
How many of you guys use just the sidekick and or the side handle to operate? Ive always operated Reds with a touch screen so Im sure it would take time to build muscle memory but keen to hear of anyones opinions or setups that dont include a touch screen.
Thanks team!

I do and am a big proponent of it. I've found myself on jobs where I'm handing off my cam to someone and picking up another and it seems to be a learning curve. I'm going to be moving moreso to a setup that has a RED Touch 5" (old style) for AC and general framing, then an EVF for more operating for myself. Just needing the more immersive experience honestly and the touch does help if you find yourself manipulating things like curves. Otherwise...I've had the Epic-W since Nov and been using just a 702 and sidekick (foolcontrol here and there on a gimbal) and it's been great! Just another thing to remember like a side handle or DSLR controls. Really not that bad at all.

One of my favorite setups is having the 702 for picture and the 4.7" for controlling the camera. No matter how cool the sidekick looks, the touchscreen is just a much superior way to control the camera. You would really be missing one of the strong points of RED cameras, which is the touchscreen control...

702 + iPhone is probably the faster way tho...

All the settings at a glance and the monitor without smudges and daylight viewable...just sayin'

That's definitely the fastest, but the touch screen is more idiot proof :)

This. Although I have been using my Epic-W with a 702 + sidekick, I will be picking up a touch for easier swapping of controls.

The reason I did it was to put the focus on items and modules I needed at the time. The touch seemed redundant but in my use, I've found just how much I would come to rely on it. That being said, I've saved up since getting my RED and it took some of the pain out of another chunk of cash during a big purchase. I was able to save some money while figuring out just exactly how I would use the camera. This is the first RED I've owned (though I've AC'd and Op'd every version of RED), so it was important to get that understanding.

IF you're trying to save some money then that works for sure and you can determine just how you'd like your setup to be.

Did you have a picture of your setup mate? This sounds like the setup im trending towards. Sounds like the general consensus is the touch screen. Thanks for the input guys!

We operate the Epic-W "headless" relatively often on MoVI shoots using the nearest iPod touch or iPad with foolcontrol - basically all our production devices have it loaded - but one of these days I'd like to get a dedicated iPod touch that lives in the case with the camera.

That combo works great for changing settings + having the 1 and 2 buttons mapped to your most frequently used settings.

Of course, you need a touchscreen or sidekick to get into the menu for enabling wifi... so there's that.

Moving from the C300 and C100, I thought the side handle was going to be a "must have" for me. But honestly, I find the touch screen to be way better. I haven't actually used the side handle in months, and am thinking of selling it. The wheel on the side handle is not for iris control, like you might assume. It just helps navigate the menus. I also frequently move back and forth between tripod, slider, handheld, and gimbal configurations. I quickly found attaching/removing the side handle to be a bit too cumbersome for me, given how frequently I move off and on my gimbal.

Haha! SO I just ran into this issue of needing to enable wifi on the epic-w and just posted about that issue. Looks like a sidekick or touchscreen is a must have.
