For the last couple of weeks I've been playing around with FCPX using the R3D native support. I have a REDRocket installed and performance is great cutting native R3D's - no transcoding etc...

However; I've been having a problem with random black frames in the timeline. Sometimes a single black frame, sometimes multiples. The RAW footage when viewed in RCX or even in the FCPX "events" browser is clean: no black frames.

This isn't a playback issue either; the Black Frames exist even if you go through the viewer / timeline frame by frame. Replacing the clip or re-rendering has no effect.

Any ideas? Anyone else have this problem? I'm really enjoying using this program, and I can see that for some of our projects we could get edits done quickly even in 4K.

This may be a little far fetched but is it possible that you introduced small gap clips into the timeline and you are seeing those? If you spread out the timeline with command-+, you can see f there are gaps. Otherwise, I am not sure as I have not experienced this so far.

That was one of my initial thoughts - but sadly not the case.

For those jobs that require finish & conform in Resolve the Black frames don't follow the XML. So that's the work around fro now, but it sure would be faster for rough edits if we didn't have to always go that way.

THis is a long shot, but a post house had a similar issue with some of my footage. We traced the issue to be random corrupt frames in the R3D file which when played through a Red Rocket would show as a black frame. When played without the RR you could see the corruption of the image in the frame. (search for a thread corrupt frames to see an example)

interesting - but none of the clips have corrupt or black frames when played outside the timeline (in RCX, The event library, or when an XML is sent to Resolve).
The black frames do carry through when you final output from the timeline.

I ended up deleting all project render files (used & un-used) the re-rendering with a fresh slate. This appears to have 'fixed' the issue.

But I wonder how long before the Black frames creep into the project again?

I had the same problem with my most recent project. Ended up just using a different take, but if this happens again, I will trying deleting the render files.
