Just curious:

As all the new owners take delivery of their EPICS, I can see more and more R1's hitting the used market...which is great for a lot of us (like myself) that have been in the HDSLR world for a couple of years and finally are able to purchased a great proven camera.

I can imagine that all the efforts of RED are geared towards EPIC and beyond...other than support, is there any room for expansion for the R1, or it is what it is...just a great camera but that's all folks.

Regardless, a RED ONE is leaps and bounds over many HDSLR's...I'll take that any day.

I dont think there is any plan by RED to drop support for the RED ONE. I still see regular firmware releases and the MX program is still very much alive and well. I am not sure 100% sure what the future holds for the R1, but I am sure it will be a good looooong while before it is put out for retirement :)

I know they have to move one...I do hope they at least continue with REDucation for the RED ONE as I see a huge influx of new owners trying to get a grasp of these cameras. It would make so much sense...RED has to know that these new owners will eventually move up to the other cameras.

I think they might put a Dragon in the RED ONE. How about bolting 2 RED ONE dragons together for 3D?

r1 is leaps and bounds over "many dslrs"? it is leaps and bounds over ALL DSLR's ...

I wouldn't be surprised if they make Red ONE upgradable to Epic specs: it can take MX sensor already, it's got enough space inside to fit the electronics....that would be an interesting twist...Jim was always saying that those that keep their RED One will not be disappointed. Just wild ass guess :)

The future is now, RED ONE is still shooting like crazy on sets all over the world. DP's retire, not cameras.

It is by far still very much relevant. I know RED is a smart company...imagine how many NEW users are going to come to RED with the purchase of used equipment...new customers, new loyalties...It is a win win situation for everyone.

I love my trusty RED ONE. There's no way I'm parting with it unless I end up in deep financial sh*t at some point ;-) I would expect RED to have some kind of plan for all of the RED ONEs that will come back to them as part of Stage 3. Whether or not they're going to refurbish them or keep them for spare parts is unknown but I'm pretty sure they will keep supporting it for at least the next few years. No matter what - the current build is pretty damn reliable so if they end up never releasing a new build for it, it will still be able to capture the most amazing images for many years to come.

This is statement says a whole lot...gives me peace of mind to hear it from an owner/user....

I love mine too... a killer camera.

to keep the camera light in handheld situations, what is a good starting point when purchasing 16GB CF cards. Assuming one is going to copy them on the field and then re-use them. Taking into account copy time... is the magic number 4, 6, 8? I saw the RED 101 DVD and it says that a good starting point is 4... just curious what people think.

If you can, buy Red One SSD module and 2 X 128G, it is a game changer.
With SSD, and quickplate, the Red is not anymore heavy and never had a drop since I made the change. Also, RedOne on the Clutch is great.
So all the new accessories make the RedOne an even better camera.
And look at the Red EVF : people were always complaining with it weight, and the pray 1 year for the Bomb EVF. Then it came. But you know what ? For the RedOne, I still prefer the old EVF...
I sure won't sell it after stage 2, even if the Epic is better. Buying a "old" RedOne MX today is probably the best choice you can do. Not sure its value will drop down after all Epic delivery.

R1 with M sensor - should we expect support?

R1 with M sensor - should we expect support?

I loved my R1 #1104 so much that I did not convert to new sensor! Now I am also woried that RED will, in time, give up support for R1s with M sensor! I hope this is not to happen but how many of us is in the market? What we should expect? Someone from RED...

does this mean that the CF cards are not so good or notoriously known to drop frames?

pretty sweet at a steep price...I guess dovetail with the basic production pack will have to do..for the price I would prefer to invest in media

talking about looks only...I love the old RED EVF...it looks like the little steel pouch were my Oakley X's came in...beefy looking

For me it's the only solution....by what I can tell, the camera holds its price. I can see people selling then with a full config around 15 to 20 percent less than a body ONLY RED ONE with accessories.

I do hope they don't...but the realities are that new product will come out and better technology will be found and these cameras will reach a threshold were nothing else could be done. As long as it still gets customer support, i am fine with whatever happens...Until 10K becomes an everyday norm, I don't see these cameras going anywhere

Hmmm...an official reply, please... Any upgrades/updates/hardware inventions to the RedOne planned?

RED has stated many times that they will continue to support the R1. ...but they've said little beyond that point.

CF cards do not have any problems with dropped frames. Those problems can occur with the red drive, as a result of excessive vibration.
The Red One is a great camera, and I confidently predict that there will be cameras still shooting in 10 years time..
