  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So the F65 has an 8K sensor to deliver "true 4K" and Sony have stated that this is necessary for optimal quality from a CMOS sensor.

Interesting to read on Sony's UK website that - "Future updates to the F65 will deliver even more performance including the ability to de-mosaic at 6K."

Just in time for Dragon I imagine. I also assume they will therefore need to upgrade the F65 sensor to 12K?

If you read the actual specs the sensor is not 8K, rather 6K...

Of course Sony will come firing back with a higher res sensor, as will the rest of the companies. It's inevitable.

It's going to get to a point where the only differences will be color rendition, DR, and compression.

What is good enough is all relative. I'm all for advances in digital image quality and Red has been on the frontlines with this, but seriously the pixel peeping is only for us geeks who obsess over it on forums and in test labs. 90% of the viewing audiences know when they like something, don't always know why they like it beyond things like "it was a good story", "it looked and sounded great", "the images were very clear", etc. the 2K images produced by a Red One when properly lit and executed would not get too many objections from general movie goers. That's a fact. 4K images from a Red One that resolve 3.2k of resolution certainly won't be objected to unless intentionally made to look bad.

There are many areas to improve in digital imaging. I think pushing for better IQ is a good thing. But I know for me personally, this is the year I step away from being obsessed with the technical and find out how to make better stories with these tools.

You mean like this? People are throwing this comaprison around now... ITs 4K ( downsampled from 6K) from an F65, Vs What appears to be 4k, downsampled to 2k from an Epic, then compared... Which is bizzare...

That has to be one of the lamest comparisons I've seen. I don't think they made either camera look good, but the methodology there is totally flawed. Not only that, but the EPIC is out of focus, the F65 is showing its chroma moire quite well. I don't see the point.

Thats a very strange comparison indeed. Pretty sure something is off with the Epic he was using because that looks extremely soft compared to what I typically see (Although I'm sure F65 is sharper than the Epic, that just looks too extreme). If it is accurate I hope Dragon can match and or exceed the F65 in sharpness as well. Not a huge fan of having to use unsharp mask on my footage and would rather have a sharper image to begin with. Obviously only if aliasing and moire could be avoided.

Yeah, it's a very flawed test. It's so dumb I don't even know where to start...

check out the guys comments on his youtube video....:out::willy_nilly::crazy:

Yeah I saw. I actually got sucked in and just commented. Already mad at myself for letting this idiot distract me.

hahaha yeah, sometimes it's too hard to hold back.

I agree 100%. I believe giving DPs as many choices as possible is a good thing, and a merely good camera in the hands of a great DP will deliver great pictures (as we saw last year with Life of Pi and Skyfall). Resolution and camera choice are important, but I don't think they're the most important issues that affect picture quality. Exposure, lens quality, and lighting are arguably more important. Pixels ain't everything.

I'm very interested to see what the F5 and F55's global shutter will look like. I saw occasional rolling shutter issues in Life of Pi the other night, and while it's a beautiful movie, those artifacts did kind of snap me out of the film for a few moments. If Sony overcomes that problem and also provides an easy workflow for post, they could be a formidable competitor, particularly for the Alexa in TV.

Hello....
so...F65 grade than EPIC?
