What would the RED community think of another "stages" program similar to how the R1 to Epics were handled. Red has stated that Dragon upgrade will cost a bit more than the original $6,000, and that Scarlet-X is no longer eligible. So, I purpose this: what if we could trade in our Scarlet-X towards an Epic, and then have the possibility to upgrade our EPIC with the Dragon at a later time?

The Scarlet-X to Epic Dragon upgrade now feels like a gigantic leap away. I say this because if we trade the Scarlet brain into RED and receive its cost off an Epic, then Scarlet owners would still owe more than half of Epic's brain cost. That difference alone is the cost of another Scarlet-X, and if we then consider Dragon, that cost adds another $6,000-9,000. I feel like as a Scarlet owner, it may be a steep hill for some of us to climb who are on a tighter budget.

I felt comfortable buying a Scarlet-X because first and foremost it is a ground breaking and remarkable camera. But I also bought the camera because RED stated and advertised that it would be compatible for the DRAGON upgrade. So I was both exhilarated and heartbroken by the news of the Dragon update because I worry that I won't be able to afford the huge burst of funds needed to participate.

I mean some of this is mere speculation on my part, but would asking for a stage program like this be completely unreasonable? Anyways, just wondering what other Scarlet-X owners and members of the community think regarding my stage proposal and dragon update. Thanks.

6k$ upgrade was for EPIC-X. For Scarlet the update would have originally been probably in the range of 15k$ (the ammount was never announced). That's because RED would never allow Scarlet users to get EPIC Dragon for cheaper than EPIC-X users would get it. After the new price bump with Dragon upgrade, Scarlet upgrade would have cost closer to 20k$.

There will be a lot of EPIC-X parts in the hands of RED after all the upgrades and I'm sure they don't want to throw them to the trash can. So it could be very possible that you could upgrade from Scarlet to Battle Tested EPIC-X. I'm sure there will be a lot of Battle Tested EPIC-X's on the RED store after the update, but can you upgrade to that from Scarlet? We'll see. I'm also sure you will not be able to upgrade to brand new EPIC-X from Scarlet since EPIC-X will be gone after Dragon comes.

Actually to be accurate, RED said the cost of upgrading the Scarlet was more than $6000 but less than the cost of the body which was ~10K.

Really? No wonder why they abonded the Scarlet update idea since everyone would have just bought Scarlet and then updated to Dragon to get EPIC Dragon for same price that EPIC-X costs :D

Scarlet Dragon was never going to be as powerful as Epic Dragon, hence the (predicted) price difference. Though this is all neither here nor there, since nothing was ever confirmed ha. I just can't spend more than 15k. Please have an option for me, Red D:

Did RED team say that Dragon for Scarlet was not going to be as powerful? I guess in the end they thought people wouldn't buy into another crippled camera.

Quit creating misinformation on your "assumptions"

Joels original post is a very different discussion than where its heading right now, so lets not derail this by talking about what the original Scarlet upgrade was, because in all honesty, it was pretty vague. So back to our regular scheduled program.

I'd be interested to see where this was stated because, quite honestly, I don't recall it that way.

Now that we know the Scarlet is not eligible for the Dragon upgrade I wonder if I should sell my Scarlet brain + SSD + Canon Mount for around $7500 now and pay the difference for an Epic X Brain with SSD and Canon mount? The trade-in offer is all speculation for now and it might take a LONG long time before we know. I was going to update my Scarlet to Dragon anyway so mind as well get closer now. 5K 120fps will be a pretty cool upgrade for now :) What do you guys think?

I keep wondering where people got the idea that there would be two Dragons; Scarlet and Epic. Of course, it has always been a possibility but I really can't recall that a specific representation of this was made.

Maybe I missed the announcement of crippled Dragon Scarlet. Could you provide link for post where it is told that Dragon Scarlet was planned to be crippled? One would obviously think that both cameras would be as powerful as the specs for Dragon were the same for both cameras in the Jim's Dragon announcement post. Only difference was that the price for Scarlet was TBA.

edit: I looked up both Dragon threads and couldn't find it. It's time for you to put up or shut up.

+1 on the Scarlet to BT Epic-X path. Some of us would be satisfied with 13.5 stops of DR and HDRx at 5K.

I predict when Dragon is released, Scarlet will go the way of R1. People will trade them in for credit towards Dragon and Epic-X (hopefully). Red will Battle Test them and put them on the shelf, holding them for a year until Sony or Canon offer a 'budget' Raw 4K S35 cinema camera.

At that point, Red can step in and say 'Oh yeah- been there, done that' and counter with a massive BT Scarlet sale and clear out their inventory of Scarlets. They can take a loss on trade-in's up front so that they can entice more people into the Red ecosystem.

Of course, this is talking about 2014 and as we know everything changes...

I think it is well enough for most. I just would not be able to justify buying something over 10k$ (or over 5k$ for that matter) that has only 90 day warranty.

You're doing it wrong if you are solely relying on 90 day warranties, also please don't derail this thread.

Not a bad idea, as far as getting a deal to trade my Scarlet X up to an Epic X. I'm not sure I need to make that Dragon step right now, since I just joined the Red family. I hope team Red comes up with something clever to make this transition possible and that would at least give us the option to go Dragon later down the road, once we have the cash.

Well, Jim did say:
Jim Jannard said:
Can Scarlet-X be upgraded to the new Dragon sensor when it is released?
Yes. However the upgrade will be more expensive than upgrading an EPIC due to the necessity to change several primary boards. There will still be data rate limitations to Scarlet after the upgrade as compared with EPIC.

Of course, this was long ago
