Question is kindly directed to Stacey Spears regarding the new Sony OLED Sony XBR-XXA1E and its variants. Noting that LG Display Corp. is the OEM for the Sony OLED models, is the HDR behavior, uniiformity and gamma response similar existing LG OLED's? Have you any experience with these early models from Sony?
 
The LG, Sony and Panasonic all use the same RGBW panel from LG. They do not perform the same with HDR or calibration. Because I work with all of them, I can't really comment on their performance.

The Panasonic does not have Dolby Vision support and is not available in the US. Its HDR10 tone mapping is great! Out of the box, the best SDR calibration I have seen on any display. It can also be calibrated pretty well in HDR.

Sony has announced Dolby Vision support, but I have not seen it yet. I own the 65" Z9D myself. Dave Abrams, who is popular in Hollywood, for calibrations, owns the 65" Sony A1. The LG will probably be the first that has proper Dolby Vision calibration with CalMAN 2017.

Speaking of Dave Abrams and the LG OLED, this weeks (06/20/17) Home Theater Geeks has Dave Abrams and they review the 2017 LG OLED. They go into detail with lots of charts and graphs for calibration.

Uniformity is an issue with all displays, CRT, OLED, LCD and LCOS for projection. You can buy five copies of the same display and get different uniformity. DLP is the only display technology that is perfectly uniform. With that said, the first year LG had a UHD OLED, it had serious uniformity issues. The 2017 is the 3rd gen and its much better than that first gen.

For tone mapping, each company has their own tone mapping algorithms. Dolby has their own that is used on all Dolby Vision displays, when in Dolby Vision mode. A Dolby customer can also use the Dolby tone mapping for HDR10, if they wish to do so. Right now VIZIO might the only one using Dolby tone mapping for HDR10. I wish every customer would offer it as an option in addition to their own tone mapping.

As you will see from the video above, there are different tone mapping approaches. e.g. You can tone map just the out of range content, leaving everything else in place. Another popular method is to tone map the entire range. This will mean that mid tones are darker than its SDR counterpart, but it also means that its perceptually uniform in range compared to the original. By that mean, the differences are the same, just lower overall vs. the top end being compressed. Dolby and ColorFront use this method by default.

On my next disc, I am actually going to offer Dolby, ColorFront (default) and ColorFront (just out of range) tone mapping for my demo clip. I will also offer this clip at 4000, 2000, 1000, 540, 300, 200 and 100 nits in 709 and 2020 color spaces. This means you can compare 709 HDR to 2020 SDR. Its a lot of versions of one clip. Its all being shot at 23.976 and 59.94, though I may only put 23.976 on this disc and save the 59.94 for later. The 100 nits will be for HDR projection. The 200 and 300 nits are to compare against a special 200 and 300 nit SDR I plan to include. The SDR will be graded at 100 nits and then tone mapped to 200 and 300. 200 for OLED and 300 for LCD. Also planning to use two triple layer discs, one for SDR and one for HDR. By using triple layer I will get an extra 20 Mbps, so 120 Mbps. I suppose I can also offer a 15 Mbps encode vs. a 100 Mbps encode so you can compare optical disc to what OTT (e.g. Amazon, Netflix and Hulu) deliver today. I like that idea.
 
Stacey thank you for the response and reference material. An additional sidebar question is related to the RGBW filters and lifespan. I see each vendor advertises a general product failure value (MTTF), but does each RGBW filters age at a different pace depending on the brightness levels each are subjected to over a period of time? What is the reasonable half life of the filters before color reproduction becomes compromised?
