  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Old reservation. New chip?

Well since Mysterium X for Epic is 5K s35mm, it might just make sense to put that same sensor into Red One. Why degrade it to 4K?

I wonder, though, if Red One is going to need a processor upgrade with the sensor upgrade? Jim?

as i said before if thay could fit the Epic hardware inside the Red One thay would have done...

Can you imagine Apple changing laptop's chassis anytime thay upgrade processors specifications?

If Red designed a new chassis is because thay need it.

I'm sure when the X sensor will be released also Red One will embed the same tecnology but with different specifications.

Scarlet will do the same (we all know that)

yes thank you.
At NAB i had a convo with Ted and he said that the Epic X S35mm chip in its differences to the current RedOne S35mm chip were as yet undefined other then 5K
I dont know why anyone is having a problem understanding how the technologies for the development of the Epic X chip could be implemented in a 4K RedOne X chip without being an Epic X chip or how any significant HW changes to RedOne would be necessary.

The Scarlet also uses the Mysterium X sensor but in a 3K format. I'm guessing that Mysterium X refers to a specific sensor technology that Red can use to make sensors of different resolutions.

It's technology, there's no value for the old chips, so there's certain to be SOME cost for them.

I would however, probably assume that while the sensor is upgraded, the processing power of the Red One will remain the same, and will become the bottleneck. Basically you'd get 4k mysteriumX, better range, maybe then get 60fps at 4k. Effectively we'd see the Epic maintaining superiority in total resolution and max framerates (with 5K tentatively at 100fps, I'm not even sure where that would put 4k, but a whole lot higher than 60, that's for sure).

Nah. The whole RED philosophy is, was and will be "making obsolescence obsolete". If a processor upgrade is required then it'll be in the upgrade.

Since EPIC is smaller than RED and is doing more work than RED it follows that they'll be able to stick a 4K chip in EPIC and call it RED TWO if they choose to. That's about the only way I can see them "making obsolescence". Their premium cameras have to be truly modular. It's the simplest solution.

This is madness. (Not having a go at you Tom, I know what you're saying.)

There's nothing obsolete about a 4k camera with better dynamic range that can do 60fps at all...in fact thats a huge improvement over the current Red one.

It doesn't make any sense at all to upgrade the Red One beyond 4k/60fps, because that's all it was ever meant to be...for anything more there's now the Epic. Within those roles, however, there's absolutely nothing wrong with upgrades that increase dynamic range, sensor read time and other variables to get the BEST image at 4k/60fps....and I'd guess that's exactly the upgrade path you'll see for the Red one in the future.

If you can easily wait another year for your RED ONE, it begs the question... do you really NEED one?

We will be caught up with reservations and orders later this year. If you pass on your reservation at that time, we will close it down. I think we have been pretty fair letting people wait... but this can't go on forever.

Jim

Jim, I've been a staunch supporter of RED the whole time. But with all due respect, this is the first time I disagree with you. This is food for thought at this point, but after you catch up, what about allowing 60 days as opposed to 30 in order to get back in to the rotation. This would ease up on the time constraints for you guys, but allow us to hold our reservation. I understand whatever decision you come to, as it is your company, but I was under the impression you were not changing the following policy. This is from a previous post of yours:

"The new, and final policy is...

If you have a reservation and wish to delay your delivery... you can. When you do decide to exercise your reservation, you will send payment and RED has 30 days to work you back into the delivery rotation. You don't lose your place. But RED has sufficient time to react to your decision.

This is our final policy. And while we could change it again just because we wanted to... we won't.

It seems like a fair compromise to those that believed in the RED program early on and the practical constraints of running our business."

My reading of Jim's post was, after they are "caught up" with the order backlogs there won't be reservations at all, it will be delivery from stock. So there would be no question of 30, 60 or x days. At that point, a postponed reservation would be no different from no reservation, because you could take delivery immediately either way. (At least, that's my understanding of what being caught up with the orders means.)

That makes sense, thank you jbeale. I was under the impression the reservation system would continue to -- continue.

I think the real questions are:

1. Do you want to buy the camera?

2. Do you have the resources to buy the camera.

We have given our reservation holders every opportunity to stay in the game. Waiting was not an issue. Those that needed to "find" the money have had plenty of opportunity. Some will have had up to 9 months to decide whether or not to take delivery. We think we have been more than fair and bent over backwards for our customers... just as they have done for us. We recognize that our customers have put up with a lot along the way.

But in the end, there needs to be a finish line.

Jim

IMHO (that is, in an early adopter opinion with more than one or two reservations), 30 days is just and simply the perfect timing. No more, no less.

E. :-)

To much speculation.

This should really be the title of this thread.. as there is way too much speculation going on here.. continue, by all means, but please, keep in mind, the words are not coming from RED.

( and thanks Brook, for being very clear about that )

In short, the option to hold off on reservations is an act of goodwill that offsets production difficulties. This goodwill it is supposed, is reciprocal, as one good act towards another deserves the same in return.
