Old Footage... New Color Science

See,

We have been capturing this, (and even better) quality the whole time we have been capturing REDCODE.

Go dust off that Betacam, HDCAM, Tape, P2, HDV, DSLR what ever footage you shot six months ago and try to squeeze more out of it.

NOT.

I fail to see the "wow" in that footage..

With nothing to compare it to, it kinda looks like a superflat raw footage that my Sony Ex1 would produce. Im sure that Im wrong..

Educate me, what am I supposed to look after? DR? Low light/noise? Highlight protection?

This is not "wow" footage. It just shows that you can go back to the oldest footage shot on a RED ONE and get better results... which includes better color, more DR and less noise. Nothing more. We are trying to encourage RED ONE owners to do just that... open old footage with the new color science. I'd love to see you shoot you EX-1 at this location and post the results.

It seems it even helps noise in darks in MX footage. Is this my imagination?

If it's true we have a wee more than 13 stops now, subjectively, and if true the RG2 noise floor purple would have to be brought down in luma threshold in new cam builds, to be less sensitive.

Jim, whilst I have your attention, will the new color science be implemented in a new upcoming camera firmware build?

Yes.

Including, specifically AN EVEN LOWER noise floor on MX footage!? If that is the case, that is a bit nuts... :eek6:

Either way, new, better noise floor or not, our Red Mx is by far the best gear money we have ever spent.... BY REALLY FAR.

Thanks Graemme, Jim.

I just had to run some recent footage through again, originally transcoded using REDcolor and REDgamma, using B351 and RC2/RG2 and the difference is night and day!

The skin tones are unbelievable and each time I made the switch, the shot would come to life and look so much better!

Thank you to everyone at Red who made this happen. It's amazing how it just gets better and better!

Depends on what you do with it. You need some flatness to have space for manipulation.

Hey Jim,

Here's some footage Philip Bloom did on that same location a few years back with an EX-1:

Besides all the annoying shallow DOF shots from a DOF adapter, there are a few similar shots to your clip at around the 2:30 min mark. It doesn't look half bad for what it is, a camcorder, albeit a great one. I always said that the EX-1 and the RED were the two most revolutionary cameras for their price out there, one more so than the other, and you can guess which one I'm referring to :-) but still, at under $6K, the EX-1 really provided features nothing in its segment had done until then or since, and that segment represents hundreds of thousands of users worldwide, those who need a high quality camera with a great fixed lens they can throw inside a backpack and take to interviews, documentaries, nature and geography shows, underwater, to the mountains, the list goes on and on. Which is why a great many of us cannot wait for the 2/3" fixed Scarlet to debut, and if priced close to the EX-1, then with its vastly superior set of features and its RED mojo, that camera will really be the one to carry the RED flag to the farthest confines....When is it coming Jim?

Is there a black level / saturation difference one needs to be aware of in relation to the old Redcolor and Redgammas?

I haven't gotten around to actually testing them, but I've seen some examples where the RC2 and RG2 are desaturated and with washed out blacks.

That is fixed in 2 seconds.

Wouldn't it be more effective to show us a before and after shot of the bus before one pats himself on the back too much?

I have just had a fortunate/unfortunate experience due to the new color science. It is so much better that I just spent a week re-grading a documentary I am working on. It was well worth the unfortunate part of sitting in front of the computer for another week. The footage looks unbelievable now.
Stoked for sure.

Wow, can you post the original frame. Love those colors!

I deleted the image in the quote because it take so much space in the thread. Maby its not the way to go. Just a thought.
