The title says it all. I posted a thread that was about Red in the off topic section and it got shut down. What gives Jim? I posted a quote from Michael Bay saying that Pirates 4 was having problems with their Red cameras while the Pirates DP said there were no problems at all. Just curious, didn't mean any harm by it. Seriously, the censorship on this forum is really surprising at times. Just trying to have a discussion, not start a flame thread.

POST REMOVED JUST SO I DONT UPSET JANNARD OR ANYONE ELSE AT RED

$10 says this thread gets closed.

I just read the first thread. It's FUD, it got called as FUD, Jim agreed and closed the thread. I don't see any problem with that.

Jim asked the question 'Why even post this nonsense?'

My answer would be 'It may be nonsense, but someone said it. FUD is like bullying; it thrives when done quietly, semi-secretly. The best way to deal with FUD is head-on; to acknowledge it, expose it, confront it, and refute it thoroughly'. This was done.

Mike

What was the point of that thread? Why spread FUD? And you want me to leave that open?

Got any better and more productive topics to discuss?

Jim

The M.Bay quote is direct quote...but it's a kind of heresay where he
does not give direct info. but instead he is saying what crew members(un-named)
have told him. And what it is...is obviously untrue exagerration.
So really impossible to discuss...since there's nothing there...reminds of movies like_____.

The interview is damn humorous...everything said is either a
complementing himself or about how misunderstood his films are.
Paul Greengrass has more cuts than me...yet he gets Academy nominations..etc

Question: Every movie it seems like you’re given some kind of special access to
some kind of aircraft of weaponry or whatever. What on this film was like something
that has never been done…

I was the only director ever allowed to be out here at the space shuttle twice.

City of Chicago. When you see the scale of the movie…Oprah Winfrey and me are the only people to ever shut down Michigan Avenue.

Because you didn't start the thread with "Red is amazing!" or "I love Red cameras!"

Nope there was not really a point, just thought it was an interesting quote and it was in the off topic section so I did not think there was any harm in it. Kind of a slow friday. There have been way more random and pointless threads here. I was not agreeing with Bay, just wondering why he would say something like that when people who have actually worked on the film have had nothing but positive things to say about the experience. Bay might have just been talking himself up "everyone else is having a miserable time shooting 3D but I, the great Michael Bay have found a more efficient way to shoot!" Still, I was not trying to flame it just seemed like a strange comment. I did not even entirely understand it so I wanted to get a second opinion. My translation is: "I have this big monstrosity of a 3D rig and I have seen other smaller rigs using Red's but they (Pirates crew) have had all sorts of problems with them." But I agree, Bay has no idea what he is talking about in regards to Red. While he does direct crappy movies, he has the visuals down so I still tend to listen when he talks tech. I just read the comment as a little underhand attack at other productions choice of gear.

That's all, not trying to stir the pot. I understand why DSLR threads get deleted but this was Red-related (kind of) so I honestly don't think it should have been closed. I think the moderators need to loosen the reins a little but you guys still do a good job of keeping things civil so not bashing your work.

People complain about having to wade through thousands of posts to find useful information. It really is quite a task building a camera and communicating with our customers. If we close or delete threads, the 1st question we ask is... "does this really help anyone understand how to work with RED or is this just more stuff to wade through". We aren't always right but that's what the thinking is. I just deleted a thread about the price of silver. Maybe it had good info in it... just not for reduser.

As for Adam's silly comment, go to the Complaint thread or Help! thread... plenty of posts that don't start off "I love RED".

Jim,

Your personal communication with your customers is certainly one of the major differences that sets Red head and shoulders above the competition. There are obviously other major reasons ... like the rest of the Red team :) ... but it is your personal involvement and passion that stands out.

One thing that concerns me is the continued ban of Mitch Gross. I do not pretend to know what brought about this ban, but I am fairly certain that it must have been some sort of miscommunication.

To many of us here in NYC, Mitch is a friend and a knowledgable equipment guide. When I was putting together my Red One package, he not only helped me understand all of the gear that I was ordering, but he also strongly encouraged it. It was his cost/quality assessment of the Red Pro Primes that partly influenced me in making that purchase.

I know that he primarily represents Abel Cine Tech, and they deal in Arri, Sony, Canon, etc. However, there are many other people on this board that sell products of the competition.

Would you please look into why his ban continues, and see if there is room for him to return.

I really miss his contributions to this board.

I understand Jim. I guess I am a little confused because I see the off topic thread as a good place to find interesting stuff that may or may not involve red. If I had posted this in the some of the other, more tech oriented threads, I would understand but this was off topic so I thought it would be okay but if you think it detracts from the effectiveness of the forum, thats fine. Your company, your forum, your rules.

Andrew... human nature.

A new post comes in and people are scanning so they read "Michael Bay says there were camera problems on Pirates 4." They don't bother to read all the posts... who does? So now the word is out, right? Putting the genie back in the bottle is no easy task. Think "RED ONE overheats on Ché". How many actually know that it didn't really overheat? It took us a month to figure out that the alarm (which went off in camera) was set 10C too low. To this day people think the RED ONE overheats. I heard it yesterday from Guillermo Navarro, the DP for Guillermo Toro, when he stopped by. And he owns 4 RED ONEs... which by the way have never overheated.

I hope you will understand that we stand up when things go wrong. But we also refuse to let FUD take us down.

Jim

I completely understand.

The other one that gets me was a thread back in the day about always needing a back-up body when renting a Red...due to that stupid thread, to this day I have several clients that insist on a spare body with every rental. These same clients have never even pulled the spare out of the case once in years of renting, yet they still insist on a backup due to this silly rumor. When you post crap like this it affects us all, what is the point?

Please keep this forum clean with useful tips and tricks or advice rather than FUD

BTW- Im in South Louisiana and in 5 years not one of my Reds has ever overheated...yet I am asked about this rumor more times than I can count.

5 Years? Are you sure you have Red cameras? :-)

I agree

I have bought heaps of things from Abel cine due to Mitch Gross and when I bought my second hand RED he was the one who kitted it out for me also. His knowledge about film products is second to none and If there is something he isn't sure about, he wont bullshit and make something up, instead he will research it and then give his professional advice.

Mitch Gross told me (and two others I was with) at NAB 3 years ago that RED was all bullshit, the cameras over heated, turn off, weren't 4k, but actually 2k.. blah blah blah.. ... and rattled on for 30mins on why I shouldn't be using them over a Phantom!. (in other words new nothing and made out he did.)
We all listened to his rant and then when he finally stopped, we all gave him a personality wake up call. 1 day later he had a fully kitted RED ONE sitting in the booth with a mob of people around it, It was the only way to get people to stop in the booth because nobody was queuing to see a Phantom kitted out, They all wanted to see a RED kitted out...

He didn't impress me at all.

But that said, I really like Abel Cine as a company. they are real Pro's, I've spent a fortune with them since.

PS.. Never has a REDONE over heat once! for us and we have shoot in the middle of several deserts in the middle of summer. The only issue I have had was very very early build glitches and a painful Batter holder and one dodgy EVF, (which RED fixed or replaced straight away) Other than that. Perfect sailing everyday.

There are a lot of misinformed people in the world and they shouldn't be punished for their lack of decorum or uneducated knowledge. If Mitch is still carrying on like this on REDUSER than fair enough, but I have only been on this forum for a year now and I have never heard a bad thing come out of his mouth about RED.

But if people are constantly "bagging" RED or are constantly negative towards RED on this forum then fair enough.
