  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Oh Boy, finally permission!!!!!

David.....I like your style hahaha

Nuka.....I def. understand what your getting at. I've never used dv tapes for my HVX always the P2 cards which is the same idea as the SSD cards. I totally get the cost of solid state media but I love it and it's always worked wonders for me. As of right now I edit on an Imac and only output to DVD but with business this might change. To start with I would like the Scarlet "specced out" like the one in this video..... http://wideopencamera.com/nab-2011-2/nab2011-ted-from-red/

It seems to be a pretty basic setup from what I've seen on the net. I will however need to purchase the audio add-on. the 1/4 inch jacks dont thrill me (i think thats what he said it came with on the body). If the fixed lens scarlet is offered in a package with what is shown in the video.....brain, screen, redmote, handgrip etc.

Will I be able to plug the scarlet in to my computer to offload it or will I have to buy a card reader. Keep in mind I do smaller productions right now so spending $25k on a camera set-up isn't ideal or cost effective. But if I can get it with enough stuff be able to start using it and purchase more as I grow...that would be awesome.

What the final content of the package is, still haven't been fully revealed yet - the same goes for the price. But one can always hope that what was presented at NAB will be some of the contents. There will probably be different audio add-on's from different companies (audio-riser's and such). But you can already get the very affordable "A-Box" now http://woodencamera.com/

Depending on how you will use the camera, you will also have to consider the extra cost of the REDvolt's that you also might want to add to your basic setup. Ted from Red told on some interviews earlier this year that a REDvolt will keep you going for about an hour on the SCARLET (probably with the setup he normally has going).

Even though I honestly don't have a clue - I strongly doubt that you can offload your media directly off the side module - like from the Gig-E port - maybe I'm wrong? As I've always understood though, and considering a recent post from Jarred, you'll need to get one of Red's card readers for the appropriate media-type. Personally, I'd much rather prefer to offload my media on the Redmag Station and keep shooting on another SSD/CF while that is being taken care of :)

If you can survive on a "basic" setup for a while, and build up as you go, then I believe that you can afford it - but again, I don't know what your pain limit is financially and the price still haven't been revealed. So it's all a big guessing-game :)

Nuka, I def. agree . I would prefer to have an offload station. I just never went out and got one for my HVX. So Im pretty used to doing things the hard way haha. Im quite suprised that the batteries only last an hour. Then again, if it's powering the monitor too. Are the batteries going to be expensive? I see the cheapes red brick starts at $450 but the batteries that go in the scarlet look kind of like the litium ion batteries that power my HVX and those can be had pretty cheap. I'm going to have to stay at or under 10k. If I can get the Brain w/fixed lens, grip, 5' screen, audio port from wooden camera, redmote, 1 128gb ssd card, 6 batteries and a redmag station.......I think it's a good start. When I get a mac pro Ill get the red rocket etc. I have no need for mattboxes or anything like that at this point so if it stays around that price point I'm good to go.

I think many of us can survive a basic setup for a while. It just depends on what you're going to do and how you work around the limitations. Don't be afraid to just start with a basic setup, but you should have some kind of financial reserve available to be able to buy additional stuff on demand. And don't forget, lots of stuff can be rented or loaned from friends too. ;-)

Regarding the content of RED's package, i think it's now harder to put it together for the targeted price. I wouldn't be surprised if they come up with multiple options. Let it be a "basic" kit and a "full" kit or different sets for different shooting styles. Freely configurable sets are also an option. Some smart calculated rebates for accessories that apply if you buy them with a brain could do the trick.

BTW, i don't think CF is totally out of the game. It still makes a lot of sense, especially for Scarlet. Maybe thats something for a "basic" kit? ;)

What is the working difference between CF and SSD besides price.....CF should be A LOT cheaper right? unless you have to buy the RED brand.I believe the P2 tech. I use now is basically 2 compact flash cards daisy chained in a PCMCIA container. But is there a quality difference or any difference that would sway you from one to the other?

I could be wrong......but in one of the numerous interviews I've see with Ted he mentioned both CF and SSD as options and he even mentioned a converter kit for one of them....Im not sure which one.....but for example if you have ssd.....a converter to allow you to use CF cards in the ssd slot.......Im pretty sure I saw this somewhere.....maybe I was dreaming.

NUKA......oh wow, I just looked up the info on the RED site for the red station, which is used to offload your media, and WOW its sooooo cheap! I never thought to look thinking it would be a ton of money but $250 is great price. For the longest time Panasonic was charing A LOT of money for a p2 card reader. over $1k so I just offloaded the footage through my camera....

You can only use the RED-CF cards - other cards are not officially supported I believe. The same goes for the customized SSD Redmag's - You can only use the ones that RED sells. AND, the same goes for the batteries - custom made :) research, research, research ;D

I think i've read positive reports about using some 3rd-party CF-cards with RED ONEs. Chances to find working cards for Scarlet are even higher now, because Scarlet's need's aren't that high (with standard-framerates and no HDRx) and newer CF-cards are faster. If RED is offering a CF-only-version Scarlet it would be logical for RED to add official support for at least some selected 3rd-party cards, because of the discontinuation of their own CF-cards.

SSDs are faster and more reliable than standard-flash-memory. Its the next step.

But CF-cards on the other hand have one big advantage, its a standardized media-format. The result is: you can get cards nearly everywhere, you can use these cards in other cameras too and yeah, they're probably cheaper. But for Scarlet (and maybe EPIC too) it makes only sense if 3rd-party cards are supported.

ssd is standard on all red cameras as of now, they are developing an ssd to cf conversion piece to stick in there, so it will be additional. don't count on other media. i recommend going the ssd route, you won't regret it.

redvolt batters are $195, travel charger is $125

and in case you didn't get the email or see the thread: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?60950-Significant-Update

and as long as nothing major changes price-wise, i'm planning for around $10K to start out with a package...

Yes, i've read the statements about going SSD only, but Jim and Jarred always resisted to answer the question about Scarlet being going SSD-only too. ;)
That looked a bit undecided to me.

Absolutely, i really like the move to SSD and the REDMAG-design looks awesome, but it comes with a price-increase and could be a bit of overkill for a standard-shoot with Scarlet.

I have the same number in mind... ;-)

Good, glad about the $10k....thats what I was thinking from the get-go. Asl Long as I have all of the basics covered....enough batteries to shoot for a couple hours....stuff like that I'll def. make the purchase once it's announced. As far as the SSD goes I'm totally for it as well. The price isn't that bad to me because the cost of Panasonic's P2 cards are roughly the same so Im pretty used to it.

I asked about SSD side module for the SCARLET-F on the "Scarlet-question-tread" - Jarred responded that they'd decided on that, yes.

"After months of trying to sell my wife..."

At first I thought that the original poster was taking the Rodney Dangerfield financing approach to buying their Scarlet.
