  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OG Komodo Firmware 1.8 beta

I’ve installed it, and so far, everything works great. I love this update! The camera isn’t noticeably faster overall, but it feels really snappy when scrolling through shorter lists.

I also love the new user page—it’s so convenient for quick adjustments!

Here I am again. I’ve noticed a small issue with the tint—it seems to shift between green and magenta.
Here’s an example: test-shift.mov. You can see it clearly on the dog in the footage.

Have you experienced similar problems (beta), or is this a common issue with the Komodo?

Running on 1.8.1 Beta

I had the same issue with the cyan/magenta tint baked into footage when I went from 1.6.5 to 1.7.5. It went away when rolling back and appeared again after updating. I contacted red and they asked me to send the camera in. After they confirmed the issue this was their response:

KOMODO firmware version 1.7 changed FPGA timing which, in this case, highlighted a margin failure on the Processor Board, requiring replacement. While issues like this are extremely rare, they're not unheard of when it comes to multi-layer PCBAs, computer electronics, and software/firmware compatibility. At this time, our Engineers have tested your camera with a replacement Processor Board and confirmed that the color cast symptom is no longer present.

I had to pay over $1,000 for a new processor board. The processor board was probably faulty when I bought it. When I pressed one the engineer's for more information he revealed red had issues getting quality processors during covid due to supply chain issues...

Are you still having the same issue? when was your camera made?

Thanks for sharing your experience, that’s not a really good sign. I downgraded to 1.7.5 but haven’t had the chance to test it yet. I bought my Komodo second-hand last year, so I’m not sure exactly when it was originally purchased. I will contact Red..

Let us know how it goes... I'm curious if others have had the same issue. The replacement board red installed in my camera is version 5.

Horizon line lives-

I recently received an email from a RED product manager following up on a feature request list I sent back around August last year.
In the email the product manager stated that the 1.8 Beta actually does have the horizon line overlay when using RED Control. I tried it and found it indeed works. I have no idea how it was turned on but it’s there.
Could have sworn I connected RC to the Komodo with 1.8 in the past and didn’t see it but it’s there,

I recommended that RED actually state this in the feature list for 1.8 as I don’t think many know horizon line overlay exists.
Things feel pretty close to complete now with that addition.
RED really added a lot to Komodo with that release.

I just want better autofocus. I can't afford professional ACs.

I've seen it on RED Control but I'm not monitoring with the Red Control but with my EVF through SDI... It should also be implementend in the SDI overlay in the RED Control or DSMC2 Style. Please.

Agreed. Horizon line should be output through SDI as well.
Please let RED directly know as well.

They read those emails and it does seem to have impact on what they do.

Red responded, but they didn’t mention any issue with the board. I only have one clip showing the problem on 1.8, so it’s not enough to pinpoint the exact cause. They asked if I had calibrated my camera, which I have, and suggested performing additional tests. However, with some shoots coming up, I’ll wait until 1.8 is stable before testing again.

I’ll update you as soon as I have more info!

I have a Question to the people who used the Beta update so far:

The following is beeing stated on Red's Website: "Added Ability to edit FPS, Shutter and Format lists."

What does that mean? Does it mean "I can edit my FPS now on the new user Pages" or does it mean I can FINALLY completely freely costumize FPS & Shutter like with a DSMC 2 System? I like to play alot with framerates & shutter speed for experimental film & want to know if its maybe worth updating to the Beta.

Thank's 🫶

The 1.8 beta firmware has been released as 1.8.3, no longer in beta. Anyone know what the changes are between 1.8.2 beta and 1.8.3?

So after 5 years, the new firmware FINALLY opens up the ability to map the FN button that's been on top of the camera this whole time.

But how do you actually set that function? You can set the FN button to "function" but I can't find anywhere where you actually set WHAT that function is.

Anyone know? Thank you!

All the FN button does is give you the option to cycle between SETUP parameters if you're on an external monitor. As someone suggested, however, the USER PRESETS are much more useful to make easier changes.
