  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OG Komodo Firmware 1.8 beta

I've had a long 2 shoot days and I just locked myself out of my storage (don't ask).

This makes life so much better. They even added User Pages.

To RED and Nikon. Thank you.

Thanks for the heads up Bill.

Anyone install this yet?
I'm holding off as I still have some ongoing shoots but I do look forward to using the features in this update.

Didn't see horizon level or Video overlays in the list which I greatly rely on with Komodo X.

I've installed v1.8 beta. As of yet, no issues. My cine7 also works as before. I will note, however that this upgrade seems more aimed at the Kx, with no significant change to the OG

The User Pages, Function toggle, and improved Black shade Calibration are all enhancements that will help use those cameras better.

In many ways this update nearly gets Komodo up to feature parity as the rest of DSMC 3.

Considering the messaging from RED in the last year stating that Komodo was at its limit I’m somewhat taken aback that this update even exists. Of course, Not complaining.

As I stated earlier horizon line overlay is still missing which given how much Komodo gets mounted into odd spots is a natural feature to have.

Still thankful this update exists.
I just have to get through some more shoots before putting this on.

The camera seems to run a lot smoother and maybe I'm crazy, but it seems as if they tweaked the color a little bit. This is a major firmware update for OG and is very refined and the code seems cleaner, more fluid. I wonder if Nikon's firmware team had a hand in it??

Interesting and thanks for the feedback Will.
By smoother do you mean the UI? Have you tried the Black shade calibration and is the procedure noticeably faster?
Looking forward to trying it.

I've had problems with calibration last night with the beta. Tried to calibrate for the somewhat outlier settings 7.5 fps / ISO 12800 and it first ran into an error, "Calibration failed". After that, even after switching back to 30 fps / ISO 800 the next calibrations apparently succeded without the error but resulted in colorful stripes instead of black.

It worked again only after I rolled back to 1.7.5. It isn't consistent though, the "Calibration failed" error occured on all cams with the 1.8.0beta but only one of them reproduced the stripes then, the others blackshaded properly after they were set to 30/800 again. They (should) have all the same settings otherwise.

Just downloaded the firmware.

Nice to finally see User Pages on the Komodo.

The Black shading is definitely faster. I timed it to be between 63 seconds to 43 seconds. It seems to be longer the 1st time it is performed after a reboot and
faster afterwards.
Komodo running the older 1.7.5 build performs Black shading in about 2 minutes 20 seconds.

Komodo X (running fw 1.3.5) Black shade is about 22 seconds.

One issue I noticed is my Komodo's fans are much louder. It's approaching the loudness of a RED One.
I hardly heard my Komodo fans during normal operation before this.

Has anyone else experienced louder fans after the update?

Been riding beta firmware for month now.
Had no issues with files.

Love the User Pages + other added features as well as speed increase in calibration.

Haven't noticed any smoothness improvements if we talk about menus. If anything menu got more jerky and unresponsive as before but thats might be only because of Beta.

One thing I noticed is that my batteries that came with the RED Komodo (2x BP-955) does not charge through the camera (using the power adapter) above 65-75%
Not a big problem as im using V-Mounts and it might be battery issue as they mostly where standing unused since purchase but is thing to look in to for comparison.

Overall it is a nice update to have.
Even nicer would be be if RED finally fixed loosing Komodo Gyro data on trimming .r3D but thats a REDCINE-X Issue

so anyone else notice the Komodo fans being louder ?

An update regarding my fan noise.

To clarify the volume of the noise, it sounded similar to the way the Komodo fans momentarily rev up to a loud volume in the beginning of the boot sequence.
For some reason the camera updated to the 1.8 beta would rev up the fans during the boot and go down slightly but spin much faster than the usual quiet idle.

Yesterday afternoon I booted up the 1.8 beta updated camera again after my post and the fan noise sounded less but still louder than normal.

I booted up the camera again this morning and the fans were now for the most part normal even after running for over an hour.

I do notice that the Komodo updated to 1.8 beta does seem to run a little hotter compared to my Komodo that is still on the 1.7.5 firmware.

Note one Komodo that is running the 1.8 beta has a V-mount adapter and the Komodo Link while the Komodo running the 1.7.5 firmware is running off the Canon BP-955 batteries and no Komodo link.

In the camera temperature screen the STM IC does seem to run noticeably hotter by 7-3 degrees between the 2 cameras though the difference seems to go down the longer the 2 cameras are running.

One other strange behavior that was always the case with User Pages.

Pressing Playback on the User Pages screen requires one to hit Preview to actually see the clip that is playing back.
I think it would be more straightforward (and less confusing) to just have the screen go directly to the playback screen where one can see the footage
instead of hitting the Preview button to see it.

For a future firmware update, we still need

- Video overlays particularly for Horizon level and please let it pass through to RED Control and SDI.

- Improved AF with Face tracking? (I've seen lesser cameras with this feature and it can definitely help with some common filming situations Komodo is put in (i.e gimbal or alternate angle interview setups with a subject that keeps rocking back/forth and shifting their body).

- 3K Super 16 crop with corresponding frame rates (75-80 fps).

Still very thankful for this update.

The 1.8.1 beta update fixed this. No longer any error nor fancy stripes.
