  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OFFHOLLYWOOD

The race is on—time to start logging more hours than Jarred's and/or Deano's new cameras.

Get it dirty for us.

Also, Jim if you want the internet to officially go insane over the new Epic—I recommend a raffle ;) At least that's the only way I'd be able to get one. :(

Fan noise is independently adjustable in speeds for both standby and recording, plus auto settings of course.

Right now the lower limit setting is 35% fan speed.. as we optimize power settings that likely will go lower.

The fans are user changeable as well remember.. we have a few fan options coming soon with different size/speed/noise ratios.

Can I get this option?

EPIC cooling is terrific considering the amount of data flowing through such a small package. Lots of attention to detail went into every single piece of the design, the tunnel, the heat-sinks, the fan and the controller. You also get to see the temperature inside the camera at all times on the screen. No surprises.

I've always been very fortunate with my R1 in extreme conditions, but it's nice to know that you guys went all out when it comes to the cooling design. The fact that the fans are changeable is nice too. As other camera companies have found, getting all this imagery goodness into a small form factor without heat issues is not easy.

From everything you guys shared about the cooling system design it sounds like it will be extremely efficient. Please don't confuse a little enthusiasm with lack of confidence.

All I want to hear is the comparison between Red One to Epic, but I understand it would be best to compare the final readings once the power settings are optimized, as Jarred pointed out.

Also loving that there will be higher rpm fans available just in case. It was a great idea to make the fan easy to swap by the user. Wonder how extreme conditions would have to get.

I just feel bad b/c I can afford a Scarlet w/ some accessories, or blow all my money on an Epic...with absolutely no accessories, modules, lenses and the like...sad thought...the reverse Scarecrow as it were...

i think we should raffle all the red one's that get traded in for epics... :) or you could just send me one, i'd be okay with that.

If I remember from way back when, they were going to be selling them at a discount compared to new R1's. It makes sense, as RED's really started to get into the manufacturer re-certified market with their "Battle Tested" branding.

i'm just trying to get some party favors. ;)

cause these past few years on here have been quite the party... best one i've ever been to!

OMG. #6!

I'm having a flashback to 2006.

I look back at the early days when we only had #006 (Elvis) and #007 (Bond) - no audio - no slow motion - no 16:9. A new firmware build every day. It was a blast. I called Stuart at his home so often his wife would just answer the phone "Hello Mark". I remember countless meetings trying to convince people to use these cameras. Countless demos.

Things are VERY different now. RED is everywhere. I'm proud to have been right inside that revolution.

And now - the next chapter begins. EPIC.

Helmet on. Let's do this.

Wow I just read this very inspiring (If Mark can do it I can do it) thanks for the story Mark.

Actually you guys, that's a really effing good marketing idea!!!

You call attention to how the Red Epic is the world's hottest and most advanced digital cinema tool, currently being used on Spiderman, The Hobbit, Aliens Prequel, etc ...

And now, for the first time in history, the owner is going to give away a complete shooting package worth over $50,000 to one lucky filmmaker.

Make them submit youtube and vimeo videos on why they should be the winner -- and that thing will be so viral and will get Red more powerful publicity and free marketing than $50,000 could EVER buy ....

Maybe even have a 1st, 2nd, 3rd -- Epic-X, Epic-S/Lite, and Scarlet.

Nothing like this has ever been done in this industry -- and it will get everyone talking about the cameras 100 times more. Then you build the list of people and drip them new footage, features, feedback from those shooting, and other great stuff. It will be insane.

The only problem is that it seems like Red will already have trouble meeting demand just based on existing interest and awareness. And if it multiplies that much, there will be a lot of disappointed people who simply cannot get cameras at any price.

But then again, maybe it's something to build the online structure/website/process for right now -- and then announce the contest once more Epics/Scarlets are being produced and there's a chance to meet the massive demand, like late summer 2011 or early fall.

Anyway, Jim -- you guys should seriously consider this. I know you have sales booked up next year for perhaps more cameras than you can make, but still once the supply can be ramped up further this extra demand and excitement will be quite nice to have =)
