  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What base plate did you use ?

Could you post a list of all components you used ?

Can you go from shoulder to tripod quickly ?

The mount is amazing. RED has gone through a lot of mounts and a lot of people have built a lot of opinions on them [including myself]. It's time to let those opinions go... this mount is fantastic and has been nothing short of rock solid thus far. The feel is perfect.

I'm curious. Is the touch screen/menu response quick and snappy (or is there lag)?
There are certain functions in the RED 1 menu (for instance manually dialing in kelvin/white balance) that are extremely slow.
I'm hoping it's changed.

Thank Brook.. its great that you've been able to use the Epic for a few weeks on one of the biggest productions filming right now and are being able to put it through the paces.

Not yet.. and quiet honestly you don't really need one. Its been 2 days now and I havn't had a single call from Mark asking how to do something...

you guys are going to love the new menus and control surfaces and how intuitive they are.

well, to stay with the truth ... this photos tagline says ... 2 months and 3 weeks ago ... this was a sneak preview before any Epic-M was announced ...

so, Epic makes happy!

I have seen a similar shot of Marcus, posted by Jarred somewhere, and he has the exact same smile .... identical!

I am a firm believer, that Epic makes happy!

It's quite snappy, even in its beta stage. Snappier than the RED ONE. By the time it's done, I expect it to be on par with the cell phone that's probably in your pocket.

The glare is roughly on par with the 7" Pro LCD we're all familiar with. It's *slightly* more reflective [at least in beta form, again], but not enough to concern me. I suspect a Hoodman will be just as valuable here as it is on the R1: it's awesome, but you don't always need it. As for the touchscreen with a hood on there... you can just use one of the other control surfaces for the camera!

There is a small Torx worm screw on the top of the body near the 1/4-20 holes. Just turn it and your flange focal depth adjusts. Turn it until you're set and walk away. So far it's held up like a champ through huge temperature shifts and moderate activity. I'm excited to see how it'll stand up to vibration and such, but if it is as RED has described it [and everything else on the Epic has been so far...], it'll hold like a champ.

Have you played with rack focusing using touchscreen?
Is the speed of the racking adjustable?
also if an actor were to walk forward toward the camera and you kept your finger on the screen on him will the focus adjust in realtime to stay on the actor?
(thanks and sorry for so many questions ... v. excited about touchscreen)
 
Thanks for the reply Brook: ) If the epic menu ends up being as responsive as my iphone 4 I'll be more than happy.

One more thing.
I've been a big advocate of RED implementing the ability to store a still image from previously shot footage onto the camera and then superimpose that still over the live footage currently being shot... obviously enabling the operator to match shots & framing by changing the opacity of the still & allowing the live feed to show through. There are so many incredibly useful and time saving applications for this feature ...

Lot's of people made this request.

Any idea if this feature made it onto Epic ?
 
Mark, thanks a lot for all the time spent trying to show us a bit of EPIC !
I understand that not a lot of people would do this.
As one said, this was not a very productive weekend, couldn't leave the computer alone.
But it was EPIC, no question about it.
