The problem:
You've got that essential shot under low light conditions
with your RED ONE but results came out noisier than you
can bare (especially in the blue channels)?

I am sure a lot of you have already faced this ugly problem.

The solution:
But don't worry, there is a lot I can do for you to save
that special shot and to spare you a re-shooting!

I am offering my postproduction skills in denoising/degraining your
RED footage (or any other HD source, even HDV can be improved).

To show you what can be done please click on the preview images
to inspect the full 1080p images:

I could have removed even more noise but it is a trade off
between keeping most of the detail, plus not looking artifical/plastic
and noise supression.

If you want to see it in motion, I have provided you a before
and after DPX sequence (50 frames each):

1080p DPX Original footage (processed through RedLine) - 270 MB, RAR archive

1080p DPX Denoised footage - 204 MB, RAR archive

To extract on OS-X you could use the free and simple UnrarX
Please use WinRAR v3.6 (or any compatible unarchiver) or later to extract on Windows.

Don't hesitate to contact me for saving your valuable shots - it
might cost less than you would expect.
:w00t:
You can PM me here at Reduser or just write me an email.
Usually you can expect an answer on the same business day
depending on your location (I am located in central europe).

To better show the amazing results possible I have put up another example.

This is a shot made at a lake where sun is already gone and only lightsource is the fire place in front of the actors.

The shot has been processed in RedAlert with OLPF compensation set to maximum, chroma denoise set to OFF, ISO = 800, curve ramped up in the shadows, scaled down to 1080p. Originally you won't see much in the shot - it is really dark.

Please click the preview images to see the full HD versions.

This is another example which I put to extremes:

This is a shot made at night, just some kinos outside - shot with ISO 320 - I pushed it up to ISO 2000 just to see how far I can go.

The shot has been processed in RedAlert with OLPF compensation set to maximum, chroma denoise set to OFF, ISO = 2000, curve ramped up in the shadows, scaled down to 1080p.

I think it's quite impressive what the RED ONE can give in very low light conditions - after some special postpro treatment.

I'll have to see them in motion with the DPX you've provided, but the stills look nice, especially this car shot.

So, are you set up to do large file exchange through the web or is this something that would need to be shipped out to you?

I am currently preparing 2 motion examples from the car inside and a night tunnel ride with just available unmodified streetlights.

So, are you set up to do large file exchange through the web or is this something that would need to be shipped out to you?

I am here on 16 MBit down / 2 Mbit up. Several minutes of R3D footage can be rushed to my server (~6 GB/h) - I would provide you with an auto-connetcing and simple to use secure client (PC & Mac), which also has a built-in chat.

Processed files can either be downloaded from my server (2 MBit max) or sent on BlueRay / hard drive via FedEx.

So here are two moving examples in DPX format:

First one is the same shot inside the car from above,
just some frames with motion of the talents so you
can see how much detail I can preserve.

Source + sharpening:

Denoised + sharpening:

Car inside - 1080p DPX Original footage (processed through RedLine) - 452 MB, RAR archive

Car inside - 1080p DPX Denoised footage - 367 MB, RAR archive

The second one is a car rigged night shot - car driving out
of a tunnel - no extra light except the original street lights.
This one was very tricky and took me a lot of time to get
rid of the random moving blue blobs from the blue channel
(which had almost no detail in the shadows - just ugly
wavelett compressed noise).

Denoised + sharpening + some extra magic:

tunnel ride - 1080p DPX Original footage (processed through RedLine) - 458 MB, RAR archive

The samples look amazing!! Very very impressive. I know you won't give your secret away but did you write your own plugin/software or are you just using a combination of software?

Which software?

It is a combination of my own proprietary thing and other tools like AFX.
Thing is it needs a lot of experience and know-how to find the right approach to noise reduction because each situation is different and therefore it can't be made automatic. Every new footage is a new challenge. :)

I am also offering special deinterlacing and debanding services, but I guess that won't be of interest for RED owners.

Noise Reduction Crisis

Noise Reduction Crisis

Hi Robert,

When I saw that you totally showed video noise who's boss I knew there was a god. I recently shot a short film that i spent a lot of money on. However, there are several shots that have so much noise it looks awful in my opinion. Can you give me any tips or hints to get started? I know it's possible but I've spent 72 hours without sleep trying to fix this serious problem. I want the film to look great. All the other footage looks good except several shots. Thanks and look foward to hearing from you!

-Mike

Robert,
Is this a service you offer for a fixed price or on a job by job basis?

Mike - it is on a job by job basis, depending on the amount of individual shots and length of footage. My goal is quality first for my customers, and this depends on the shots and their individual problems.
But I am willing to give a discount for larger jobs and also a special discount after a regular work relationship has been established.

Thanks Perry! :)
And I know for sure that there are very professional guys working there in China too!
Thanks to the internet, country borders do only exist on maps and in minds of some people anymore. This is the blessing of modern times.

I think I can do a lot for DPs working in China - without beeing there physically. Altough I have to confess I would love to travel China one day.
Anyway, if I can be at service do not hesitate to contact me as soon as possible. As I wrote above to Mike - quality first for my customers.
