  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Off the chart...

... Any chance to get it works on Scarlet S35 or 2/3"?

Yes..they have previously stated HDR will be on the Scarlets..

You have to get used to features not being disabled in the Red line-up
as they don't work that way. Whatever they can deliver..they deliver.
Reason Epic costs so much more than Scarlet is just the sheer cost
of the horsepower required to push slo-mo through it.

if this is where we are at now with mysterium x , where is monstro going to go. larger sensor yay. if you can get 18 to 20 stops of DR in HDR mode now. whats left to do image wise

ASA 100000 and 28K are a good place to start.

Though, I can see both being achieved within the next few years.

I'm loving the 18 stops of DR and I can't wait to get my hands on a Scarlet X8 and hope this technology seeps through. I'm sure if the processing boards in the camera are capable then it'll be enabled. That seems to be the way Red work.

Also has anyone else noticed that the picture on page 2 of the test shoot also contains another Epic on the table with it's side CF module removed. I just thought it was interesting to see.

Keep up the MIND BLOWING work!

Since 4K is pretty much hitting the edge of human eye resolving power at reasonable viewing distances it's hard to imagine what 28K gives you unless you're NASA or the CIA. I think 5K for 4K will keep me occupied for a long time.

Switchable sensors with different ISO's makes sense. I'd like to see a 50 ISO sensor for exterior day without ND filters. ISO 12800 might be as far as that needs to go. And you'd only want that when you wanted deeper DOF when you're in very low light.

isnt HDR a "look"
i dont see why you would use it 24/7, but maybe im missing something

Subtle, natural HDR just looks like a nice shot so I think it would get used a lot. A lot of the weird HDR comps with super saturated colors etc. has got to be a fad. It's like the watercolor effect in Photoshop years ago. People eventually figured out it wasn't particularly special.

It depends largely on the viewing distance. Personally, I like watching films either on the big screen, or up close on a home display. I would like at least quarter of my vision to be invaded by the image. I know not what my eyes can resolve, but a few hundred megapixels seem to be a well accepted figure. My personal target, then, is about 16K. That is the "good enough" barrier. Beyond that would be most welcome. However, once we begin to reach 200-300 MP, no viewing display or distance from display is likely to benefit our human vision.

But, you clearly haven't accounted for bionic eyes!

Seriously, though, I would rather see innovations in functionality, size, cost, sensitivity, DR than extreme resolutions above 8K.

The 18+ Stops is at 5k, right?

So if I downsampled that to say 2K (apparently a very popular format for some camera manufacturers) at full debayer, that would give, say 1 1/2 extra stops? So 20 stops latitude at 2k/1080p?

And Græme hasn't even started yet?

Man, times they are a-mazing.

I know not what my eyes can resolve...

I know what your eyes can resolve and you'll be standing about 5 feet from a 144" TV to resolve 4K.

But you're right - bionic eyes are probably coming. I also wonder if image magnify could be coming in future TVs. Then all the resolution in the world becomes valuable again.

Do you have a source for the above? Considering 1K on an 3.5" iPhone 1 foot away...

There could be other applications like massive signage/hoardings Blade Runner style. They are coming. A person might only see 1/10th of the hoarding from ground level, and 28+K could help there. You could even film a wide angle panorama with an extreme fish eye lens (OMNI MAX?) and pick out your shots in post production? I find it useful extracting 1080p motion out of a 5K image (DSLR timelapse) already.

We just gave birth to RED HDRx last night and the results are jaw-dropping. There is still a ton of work to do to tune up the program. After talking to the engineers, it seems highly unlikely we can tie all this stuff up before we begin shipping EPIC... which is what I said in an earlier post. This is a feature that will be added to the camera when fully ready. It is complicated stuff. But very cool.

Eyes don't need to "resolve" lines or pixels to perceive difference in clarity.

This is brilliant news ! Jim will HDRx improvements translate to the 2/3 and S35 Scarlet too ?
