I'd be highly surprised if that wasn't the case David...

Awesome

Hey Aaron.. if you choose option #2 and sell your body afterwards, that customer does the normal transfer procedures and they still will receive support. The thing they cannot do is use that body again as a trade-in in the upgrade programs themselves, as after a RED ONE body is used in any upgrade program, it's number is marked off in our system for the rest of its life, no matter who owns it.

Great to know Jarred, i wouldn't have expected that at all (for a re-trade in with the new owner), thanks for the speedy reply as well. You have offered more then enough to the current R1 owners for upgrade options.

P.S - Go Flames (hehehehe)

Jarred,
Presumably whoever buys an executed Red could still pay for repair on an as-needed basis and buy a M-X upgrade on their own dime.

Steve, yes that was very insightful. I understand how helpful it is to go automatic in certain situations, but in some others, it is vital to lock the variables and be prepared to adjust any given variable without notice...I find it difficult to believe that Red would make a lens inferior to the ergonomic characteristics of a Sony HDV Z1 (two rings, zoom and focus plus an iris screw type of button next to the lens), for example since I own one. I see I belong to the same group of filmmakers as you do, documentaries and the likes...

Enrique,

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions on this. I frankly don't see RED overlooking any needed features for the utility of the fixed lens. If it appears that way, my guess is that we still don't have the final specifications for the fixed lens Scarlet. We won't have those until at least the end of November.

See David's thought above, which I agree with - that there will be many user-programmable options to set the camera up the way you like/want/need to operate. A simple programmed togle button on the Side Handle, which allows us to quickly toggle between iris and focus on the lens ring would be fine.

Reference other zoom control options besides the lens ring, Stuart English and Jarred of RED have posted:

(when asked “Can we program the zoom control?”)

"Yes ☺"

You are probably right given all the thoughtful implementations I saw on the 30th Oct. announcement. My fear came from the fact that I have given a lot of thought to the fact that my circumstances in shooting will not allow me to go with primes or manual zooms, so I am very dependent on the 8x fixed option. Anyhow, thank you for your input.

Jarred, as I understand it, if you choose the ring to control focus, how would you adjust the iris during a shot? or zoom in for that matter? usually lenses with automatic features have and independent ring for focus and zooming and iris control....maybe I misunderstood your phrasing.

There are more "rings" in numerous locations on separate controls.. i.e. the side handle has multiple rings/wheels that you can assign to the iris, or the focus, or the zoom to. If you are a diehard guy that needs to have manual control of all lens operation, we make the removable fixed 2/3" version.

what !?!

you are making a removable 2/3 zoom?
EDIT: or you mean buy a non red zoom for the interchangeable 2/3 brain ?

Jarred, on the contrary, I will definetly need the AF many times, but some other times I need manual control. But thanks for clarifying the many "on body" possibilities for controlling and assigning functions.

I'm pretty sure he means the latter (i.e. referring to the 2/3" Interchangeable). Jarred?

IMHO, he should probably clear this up before it starts making the rounds and becomes the subject of another "But you promised us this!!!" thread in the future. :001_rolleyes:

yeh I'm sure its a typo
instead of 'removable fixed 2/3 version' I am sure didn't meant to include the word fixed

Jarred meant 2/3" interchangeable.

You can have full auto or full manual... you choose. But the manual controls are not the same as conventional.

Hi Jim: sorry about this change of subject, it's regarding future payment. Here in Venezuela we are not allowed to use more than 2500 $ on credit cards a year. Imagine !! This means I have to fly my wife so we can both pay for the Scarlet on the spot where you guys have a credit card point. (We can't just give you the number, we have to swear under oath that we are actually travelling somewhere...) I know this sounds ridiculous. Will that have to be at your Red Offices in L.A., or somewhere else?

I hear ya, I'm studying filmmaking here at Argentina right now. The credit card doesnt work at all (and have 1000 left). And fear that this month (and to be applied for next year) there will be a new providence for CADIVI where you'll only get the whole 2500 in USA (ARUBA for example 800 maximun) if you travel for more than 30 days.

Lucky me I bought a Sony fx-1000 last year and will sell it here, exchange that for dollars and save some money. Pay my ticket to red with dolar paralelo :) and co-pay with cash and credit card

I know there are many Venezuelan RedOwners, I worked one as aprendiz in a red short over there. I wonder the answer to your question, do we have to fly to Lake forest, is there a problem on paying on a not online system?

By the way. I always read quietly keeping track of this company and dont exchange a lot of comments. The "amazed" level is always changing for better. Since I'm talking now I think I should also say: Wow, thank you for your vision. It is really something that people will teach on "history class" on filmschool years from now. And your company spirit is more than an example for all those independent companies who also just doesnt want to work with someone with a bad attitude. Keep the amazing job. I feel very lucky to be a filmmaker on this times of change and real red revolution. THANK YOU. From Argentina a Venezuelan! Hope to meet you guys some day

Obviously I can't speak for Jim or RED, but as I remember when RED Ones were becoming available RED actually required payment via wire transfer past the first $7,500. So you could pay directly via bank wire transfer instead of credit card, assuming that is allowed in your country.

Since I believe Scarlet will commonly sell for less than $7,500, I assume many people will use their credit cards to pay for it. But I'm sure there will still be a wire transfer option. RED would generally prefer the wire transfer anyway since fees for receiving transferred money (if charged at all) are much lower than credit card charges. It actually costs the merchant about 3% of the charge amount to accept cards, and for the amounts we're talking about here, that's a significant amount.

If you can only get your money out of your country by travelling outside of your country, I'm wondering how you could afford anything based in the USA, since travel for long periods here is extremely expensive unless you know people you can stay with. Sounds like a hideous pain.

I'm hoping that due to the less common nature of wire transfers they might be less policed then credit cards.

Hope that helps.

D
