"but wait, why do I have to wait? Im still buying an EPIC Jim, "Jarred, im still buying an EPIC!..." Im keeping my side of the Trade-In deal?
You don't have to wait ... you get to trade in your RED ONE for an Epic-X as soon as that deal is offered just as always planned ... the deal isn't offered yet.
Seriously, you can't let emotion mess up your mental abilities. Just accept the reality that sometime in the not too distant future you are going to participate in one of the most generous deals ever offered by a manufacturer, as originally stated. There are some other additional earlier offers that you can also participate in, if you so choose. Little kids are told they have to wait for Christmas, this is the same thing. Relax, make a movie, write a script. There are some (many) logistics to the roll out that RDC is handling, try to wrap your head around this rather simple (wonderful) event.

Agreed.
Both #2 and #3 are solid deals and I will not let that opportunity slip by me.
I, too, need to put my thinking cap on and analyze my business strategies.
Luckily, we have lots of time (it would seem) between the rollout of TATTOO, the testing/ feedback and the implementation of the beta testing results and feedback.
I'm curious regarding how much the community at large will be able to participate, via discussion, stills, etc. in the TATTOO program. There would be a lot of noise for the Red Team to sort through, but one or two terrific observations or suggestions from the wider community might make this valuable.
Cheers,
Harry

On the gunner renders with the 24-xx electronic lens, there is a vertical post below the lens just in front of the mount, where you would find the tripod collar on a typical Nikon or Canon pro level lens of the same length (ie nikon's 24-70 f2.8).

...

I don't think that is a lens support post. I originally thought so too when looking at the "angles" render of the gunner.

But when looking closely, and also consulting this picture, I think we are seeing htre front portion of hte side handgrip thru the gap between lens and gunner:

The lens was quite the accomplishment... and the optics turned out pretty badass. :yesnod:

Anyway you guys can start teasing us with stills from this bad ass lens! Also the sensors coming out in any cameras? It will give some of the nay-sayer something to think about and talk about.

I'm excited about the changes in the scarlet and can patiently wait now. I don't think think there is a single camera out right now that does what I want, and I think you guys adding more to the camera has finally answered my prayers to the camera gods. I can see myself owning a fixed and s35, but think I will probably add 2/3 detachable as well. For a few grand to have a extra body will be great!

How does the scaled 1080 work, does that scale the full frame down so there is no magnification of lenses? Will this option work for other formats if this is the case in other camera such as s35? File storage and transfer will probably always be an issue for me in the field, but it will be nice to shoot wide, but not hold the files sizes of 5k (I know this sounds crazy, but film with me, and you'll understand)

Hi
One of the biggest stalling points in the acceptance of red one was it ability to be handled in post, so I will put my hand up and ask Red to include the post houses in the beta testing, releasing gear that is not post friendly and having post chase their tales is something to be avoided. So it would be great if there was some footage available for post people once the first cameras ship. Wish we had firm dates on the cameras, even if these dates were way off in the future, to be able to say to people you will be able to buy the scarlet you want by the end of the next year would be a great thing to hear.
Cheers

As primarily a post shop, I concur... sample files from the new rigs would be helpful not only in developing workflow, but also in identifying potential disruptions to the usual time expectations for post.

(by the way... thanks again RED team! Inspiring work you guys are doing!!)

Sorry, I'm really not good with photoshop...

But I was thinking from the beginning of this "lets snap the different bits of the camera together" thing... and... well...

Someone can build a jib right...with a Red Scarlet/Epic DSMC bracket (one used by Red folk for snapping two modules together) on the front end of the jib... so you snap the brain straight onto that.

Then you snap the rest of the camera's modules onto the mount at the bottom of the jib... the operator end...

There's internal wiring running the length of the jib arm... so basically it's just splicing a wire into the connection between the brain and the rest of the gear...

So... potentially several benefits... not least of which is the idea that the amount of weight on the far end of the jib is kept to a minimum (depending on what else you blah blah) and the rest of the camera forms at least part of the counterweight, necessitating less extra counter-weight.

and of course the REDmote is at the operator end... or in someone's pocket... just like always.

So, red people, is that even possible? Would the "signal" from the brain survive a trip down a 10 or 20 foot wire down the inside of a jib?

Because it would be a way to create a quite cheap and lightweight jib that would be very fast to rig a camera to for one shot... then take off again for something else.

If it is possible... well I submit the idea to the community... any 3rd party who wants to show up the the next NAB or two with something like this... I'll be interested.

But my question is basically about splicing a line in between modules? Would it work? because the options that could open up for these sorts of ideas would be cool...

Tim,

We'll be shooting some stuff ASAP and releasing to the community via OpenCut as soon as we have a schedule.

Once we know when we can expect our TATTOO unit, I'll update the OpenCut section of REDUser as well as the OpenCut site.

Any possibility we could get sample files (even still images) from Scarlet rigs?

...if you're a RED1 owner, you in the elite group...everyone else...you're not.

Would you have purchased a RED One in the next three months if you had no idea new cameras were coming? In the interest of customer appreciation (current and future,) RED has laid it's cards on the table. You fault them for that?

Jim even stated well in advance of the announcement that anyone owning a RED One before October 30th would be glad they did. Why didn't THAT motivate you to buy?

It seems Red company is going along the Big Hollywood boys club... the rest has to wait.

Mercedes-Benz makes magnificent and beautiful cars but I've never bought one. How would Mercedes even know I exist? Should I expect they would send me a car, in a custom color, to test drive and keep and offer a 25% discount on the price... then let me keep my old mini-van too?

... now we can't use the upgrade path since we didn't buy a camera before the 30th.

How can you possibly upgrade something you don't own??

... you have the Tattoo program, for qualified... filmmakers... Great for those, but suck for others.

I want front-row seats and backstage passes for the next U2 concert, but I'm not willing to pay for a seat in the nose-bleed section. I guess you'd say that sucks for me?

... now I feel you are going a direction like most corporate companies.

For some it's easier to curse the darkness than to light a candle. So don't support the company, sit on the sidelines and watch the world pass you by. Meanwhile, some of us have work to do... and with RED's product in our hands we do it well!

Good luck to you, sir.

Amen

Amen

Amen... And I don't even own a RED...

The way I see it, The rest of these smucks (no offense) who buy before I do, pay for R&D on my eventual camera (not to mention I dont really know what half these features do, it's nice to have actual pros debugging processes and technologies).

I'm waiting for a scarlet, we're a year to date, almost, from the announcement of the redesign. Did I want the first Scarlet I saw at NAB, Hell YES. Do I want touchscreen focus? HELL YES. Do I want OLED lenses and all the other cool shit? HELL YES. I'm willing to wait so I don't have to buy the next $4000 upgraded brain in a year or two.

Red is doing what Apple has failed to do. I've invested tens of thousands of dollars in Apple product, to have the LITERALLY come out with an upgrade the next week (G4 Quicksilver, custom ordered). No announcement- no EOL. Nothing... I'm happy to know I'm participating in a company's product in which I've invested not one bloody cent, and I'll walk away with a camera beyond my dreams (Seriously, touch focus- that shit is cool and beyond our dreams). Red wont do what Apple has done to me.

That's part of the reason I love my DirecTv DVR. DBSTALK.com allowed a forum to post feature requests and we saw them actualized. DirecTV read it and responded. Sure, people got pissed they bought boxes that were not 100% stable, and that's DirecTV's fault for not announcing that they were kinda Beta. BTW, my house now has 4 HD DVRs from DirecTV because they work how I want them to...

Thanks.

One thing about the gunner rig.

Would you really have a 200mm lens on there? I mean wouldn't it be better suited for something wider, say from 18mm to 50mm.

Hand held with a 200mm lens seems a bit of a stretch, unless that is a zoom lens.

Also, is there a weight estimate for the gunner rig?

Im going to ask again, for the sake of posterity- Is it safe to assume that scarlet is in-fact a 2010 and not a 2009 release?

Despite the fact that you've invoked posterity I'm certain that you won't get an answer until you get an answer...Otherwise I'd ask myself.

David

Neat idea. I believe there is a "snake" module/connector in the works. Not sure how long it will or can be.

IBloom

Jarred said some form of connectivity was in the works. I hope it is some kind of ethernet connectivity, maybe running Fiber protocols over the copper... That is supposedly crazy fast. It is cheep, easily accessible, and not propriety.

I think it's safe to say that, they've made it pretty clear epic will not be released to public in 2009 and scarlet comes after that.

well yeah, no answer until they give us one, but I think its fair to ask, Im not asking for release dates, or price quotes or any of that, its Nov. 2, they would have to bust some ass to get the camera out before Jan.1- so my question goes, Im not trying to be contentious. I would like, but dont expect a simple yes or no on this one ;)

Definately. The Epic X beta tests haven't even started yet, and it's already november, and it has been stated that Epic X will be the first camera to be released. So you can be absolutely sure that it won't be a 2009 release...
In fact (but that's just me), I wouldn't expect Scarlets before next summer...
