October 30th Announcement Feedback

btw: all posts that are critical of Red are being deleted by Jarred or buried in complaint thread, where nobody can find them

smack anyone of other Red regimes (Mao, USSR)?

No it's called trimming the fat or reducing the noise. Complaints posted in the Complaint Department are there for all to see.

There have been tons of posts deleted for that cause, and actually most of them were not complaints. In fact, there has been far more deleted postings of "fanboy noise" with these recent events than any real complaints.

So, Jim's Oct. 30th post #26(http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=501693&postcount=26) is rotated to give us the most revealing view of the "far side" of the gunner configuration yet:
Gunner.jpg

Musings:

1) Is the handle on the far side part of the gunner accessory?

2) That handle has an interesting shape. It has a "ridged" portion along it's length, as if to curl your fingers around. Additionally the cylindrical portion gives way to a wedge-shaped upper portion... then it's unclear if we are seeing the beginning of a thumb cut-out, or if that's a shroud of some sort around the mic in front of the handle. Hard to tell. This looks like it may be some sort of pistol ergo-grip... perhaps with some control functionality to it? Does it rotate?

3) Is the "shotgun mic" portion of the gunner offest to our "near side" in that picture, allowing for a gear to engage the bottom center of the lens? It appears that the locking slider along the top of the gunner may be to adjust an engagement for different lenses? Does the handgrip slide with it and control that gear?

4) It appears that the "shrouds" nearests us and on the bottom on that picture also slide/adjust. Is this all part of the sliding mechanism to accomodate the lens gear adjustment?

Lots of interesting details in that render...

I think you have it pretty much figured out, Steven. I wonder if the nearest "shroud" as you call it adjusts to let the microphone move in and out depending on the length of the lens that is mounted. It looks like the pushbutton in the end of the shroud could engage/disengage a tab that locks into the diagonal "tracks" next to the microphone. Not sure what the shroud on the bottom does, that one has me somewhat baffled.

I do agree that the grip on the other side is an ergonomic grip that is ridged on the front side and tapered/cutout on the back side. I would really like to see this from the other side!

The Gunner rig is really something you need to see (and feel) in person... its a bit hard to explain how it works (although you guys are doing a pretty good job)

You got the sliding part right.. all the accessories you see are on rails, they slide back and forth.

Jarred, are you willing to confirm whether or not that it deos engage the lens gears? That is, does it provide some lens control?

That part has been speculated upon, but not confirmed AFAIK. And you can't really tell what's inside that little "cradle" that's snugged up to the bottom of the front lens gear. The fact that the cradle is angled with respect the lens gear teeth, and it appears you can "see daylight" thru the section where I'd expect to see mating gear teeth makes it a bit of a mystery.

(You are always, of course, welcome to post video of the Gunner in action, if that's easier than trying to explain it. ;) )
Thanks.

Thanks, Jarred! As someone who is new to this forum and the RED camera world in general, after reading all 80+ pages of this thread, I have to say that I am blown away by your (and Jim's and all the other RED folks) willingness to share time and information with us. The technology, engineering and manufacturing precision evident in all the RED products in quite amazing, IMO. I have been in this industry for a long time, and you guys set a new standard in communication, transparency and helpfulness. I hope everyone here appreciates how lucky they are that you guys care so much!

Just my .02...

I'm very pleased to hear the lens for the fixed 2/3 Scarlet is finished. I was certain that the lens itself would delay the release. Good news, good news!

Damn...and I'll was hoping it'll be an acoustic range finder with focus control...

Jarred...why don't you blow Tom's sox right off and tell us what the gunner does!

I gave up on Jarred..
The Red Gunner has him hypnotized as he has had it in his hands.
Its too late for him

Yes, I too thought it seems to be an acoustic lens control device
because I don't think Red needs to give us a microphone.

And ruin all this great speculation?? Now what fun would that be? I'm sure the folks at RED are really entertained by all our wild fantasies...

This is a little off topic, well at least the topic this thread has leaned toward (the EPIC). But, will we know more about the release schedule for the Scarlets after the November 30th announcement? I was a little disappointed by the lack of Scarlet info, although I do understand that this was an EPIC centric announcement.

The Epic is (for lack of a better word) Epic. However I can't justify the cost as a novice filmmaker. I am really hoping to have A FF35 Scarlet and a 2/3 Scarlet by Spring 2010 as I will be shooting a Short Film next summer. The sooner I know what my equipment will be the better. As we all know that "everything can change", but i would appreciate any info concerning the nature of the Nov. 30 announcement.

fun and profit

fun and profit

Mention of lens data and measurement of camera motion is evidence that RED are listening whilst other manufacturers have been unwilling or unable to introduce such features in the past, well done RED.

It is obvious RED are spending much time and money on R&D of improved ergonomics and user generated tasty features that are either designed by committee clumsy or non existent from the other manufacturers.

For instance there are adjustable autofocus systems designed for use with high end broadcast lenses where the operator can select the defined area of interest with a cursor which is clumsy.

The use of a touch screen is the way to go.

One issue with using pistol grips is that they tend to hang below the level of the bottom of the camera so when the camera is rested on a flat surface it falls over and tilts to one side.

Typical pistol grips use a rose fitting to allow adjustment, I particularly like the shape of the arri handgrip.
What would be nice is a way of quickly stowing the grip from the preset position so the camera has no protrusions and so doesn't fall over.

I'm not sure if the servos are built into the grip, if they are not, then being able to use the same pistol grip on top of the camera to control zoom focus iris and roll would be nice. Enabling it to be integrated into a pan bar is cool too.

Mention of 250fps frame rate completes the spec on a system that I suspect leaves the other players, who have a smaller user base than RED, wondering how they missed the concept that pleasing the customer is where the both the fun and profit is at.....

As soon as I saw the announcement I went out and bought a 7D, shot my first commercial job with it over the weekend, and everybody is happy. The camera has paid for itself already.

The 7D is so far from perfect that it's not funny, but you can work with its limitations and please clients. You can get great results that are perfect for some jobs.

Does this mean I've abandoned Red? Hardly. When Scarlet comes out I'll get two, at least, and I'll rent Red and Epic for larger shoots. But I needed something now that was cheap and effective.

My point is, if you need something cheap and soon there are alternatives that produce good results, so long as you're not expecting something as good as Red.

Of course, it may be worth waiting for Scarlet. When we shot our feature, we put the schedule back by six months so we could have a Red One and we are so glad that we waited. Anything else would be have been too much of a compromise.
