Looking forward to the good news on Nov 30th. Client has multiple projects and need to get the Scarlet soon. Holding out, but tough with the 5D and 7D available now, but, holding out nonetheless.

Right now, it doesn't look like the Scarlet will arrive until 2010. Until then, you could always rent something.

Sorry you didn't hear the news you wanted but what you heard was where we are and what we are doing. To tell you something you wanted to hear wouldn't have been real. You have lots of options... but getting us to change our program to fit your wishes is not one of them.

Jim

I wasn't asking for you to change anything. You keep making the changes. Keep it up. I get more excited at each update. I was just asking for a delivery date as was promised. I think most here were hoping to hear that. You got "what" now where is "when". We already know "why" and even "who". Sorry if I ruffle some feathers, but there needs to be someone here with some courage to ask that!

Not to be repetitive, but it would be nice to keep all the rants and criticism to the appropriate thread as doing so here is getting annoying. I look forward to a community full of healthy debate not impassioned posts that are essentially saying the same thing.

They're the same thing for a reason.

You are looking at it wrong Tim.. It has nothing to do with punishing early adopters.

Epic-X customers that want to trade in for full value with R1 do not loose their place in line.. that works just like we always said it would. The only difference is that there are 2 stages before that 3rd Stage. The 1st Stage obviously needs to come first before stage 2 or 3.. and Stage 2 is has multiple advantages in coming before Stage 3... it wouldn't make much sense to do that backwards.

Remember, those Stage 2 people are early adopters as well.. it really has nothing to do with what your place is in line.

Try and remember the generosity of the trade-in program when you start talking (or thinking) that we are punishing people..

Hi Jarred. Thanks for clarification. I again LOVE the trade in program...as does everyone who has a RED ONE. What was not clear, was the place in line... which is now clear, thanks.

I agree, Stage 2 totally kicks ass, especially for what you get... for what its worth , semantically, I should have used a thesaurus, but I didnt say punish, I said penalized. Remember, you cant detect tone on here. I was doing my best NOT to imply that RED is punishing anyone... and really tried to phrase that question as respectfully as possible...and prefaced it for lack of a better word. I know there are some a-holes posting smack on here.

You know by now, thats not my M.O.
Thank you again for the response... and moreso, for that very important clarification. I think Stage 3 people will relax more now.

cheers

I'm way confused here, if I decide on stage 3, then I dont get that until all 7000 Red owners got a shot at stage 2? rendering my place as Epic 27 no longer?

heh heh sorry Peter.. didn't mean to make you feel left out :)

You have anymore questions?

any ideas on the prices for 1.8" red MAG? I'm not expecting an answer really because I'm sure you would have listed it with the other modules if you knew the price yet but if you do know that would be cool.

otherwise all is good and I'm just in savings mode, thanks for getting back to me

You are right.. if we knew we would of posted it.. Still working on pricing for those.

No worries Tim I know your Questions/Concerns came from a good place.

I think what some people aren't quite getting is that Stage 3 is the worst option for RED themselves as they take on the full loss of value of the R1 that you're trading in. I hate to hear that people like Shawn N. who have obviously been some of the best supporters of our beloved scammers having to wait longer to move on up to the Epic, but I can definitely see REDs perspective here.

We have a program that operates like no other camera company (or any company I know of for that matter). A full trade-in allowance option for something that people have owned for up to two years... and many RED ONEs have have paid for themselves, some ten times over. It is just a bit incredible to offer this, priority in every possible way and give every option imaginable to every customer. If there is a better program out there, we are willing to listen.

Jim

Correct. Profoto lights do not work with TTL. Many of the packs and monolights have the typical photo eye trigger that a lot of light systems use (Broncolor, Speedtron, Norman, Alien Bees, etc.), so you can trigger them with any strobe, but they will just interpret the TTL pre-flashes as triggers and your frame will be under-exposed.

A TTL capability will make my wedding photographer friends very happy. Does this mean that you're making a speedlight? Or an iTTL hotshoe module ( I know, I know, I'll wait)

Cool.

TTL for Profoto Strobes? I don't think that is possible..

As for TTL for Nikon/Canon flash.. that we can't talk about yet :)

Certainly Jim, and as we all know you can't ever please everybody. I think you'll find more R1 owners than not (and probably a vast majority) are more than satisfied with the generous offering RED is making here.

My education is primarily in economics and finance and the notion of willingly giving your customers full trade in credit on old equipment because you guys felt you didn't quite deliver on previous promises would likely make you the laughing stock of corporate boardrooms around the world.

And I think that is exactly the way you like it

Different.

Different.

Jim,

I called Toyota today and told them I was a loyal Prius owner, had been on their waiting list and got one of the first cars off the assembly line when they first made the hybrid. They said great, but refused to give me full credit towards a new Prius for being "loyal" and believing in their new untested technology.

Then I called TiVo and explained how I had run to my local retailer as soon as they released the first commercial DVR, and now I wanted a full credit towards a new HD tivo and lifetime service. Instead, they offered me $100 off a new $500 box and I have to buy lifetime service AGAIN!

You don't even want to hear about my original 5Gb iPod at the Apple store this afternoon.

These companies are unreasonable and.... oh, wait. Maybe Red is just different. Exceptional.

Thanks Jim, I can't wait to pay for your new camera(s).

P.S. could you next start a health insurance company?

The Announcement thread is locked so use this thread for feedback.

Thanks for the info.

Does that mean I can not trade-in my two RED One for two Epic FF35? (plus money ...)

Any idea when the we need to start make the choose of STAGE? One month after official notification it says in the announcment. I have pretty high serial numbers. It take time to raise the money in a big company ...

Btw, any MTF charts for the 617 lenses yet :-)

Question, When this trade-in/credit phase is over, will that be the end of all future trade in offers?
Would a new customer who buys an Epic brain for example, be able to trade it in for whatever technology is the successor of said Epic brain?

The lens was quite the accomplishment... and the optics turned out pretty badass.

Being a Still and Motion lens we had some huge hurdles to overcome, and some of our own pegged the lens as the long pull when we started as well.

I hope some of you will agree that we are actually starting to get pretty good at the whole lens game... :yesnod:

that's really exciting. very much looking forward to seeing some samples!

Why is it so hard for some to see this?

The idea of a full trade-in allowance began when we realized that "Obsolescence Obsolete" with the RED ONE didn't go as far as we had hoped. While you can upgrade the sensor, the specs are limited to certain boards inside. From here on out, you can upgrade an EPIC or Scarlet as needed, from sensor (Brain) to each individual module. There will no longer be a trade-in allowance going forward... because the system is now ideal. We suspect that there will be good resale value in each brain going forward.

We care about our customers and try our best to treat them as we would want to be treated... but it is a business. The development costs for these cameras are astronomical... we need to charge so we can continue to move the system forward and stay ahead of the market in features and specs. Once you are in the RED system, we want you to always have the best equipment as technology advances.
