  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OConnor O-Box

OConnor did. I just gotta learn to read a calendar properly.

been looking for a new mattebox. glad i didn't pick up an mmb-1 and the o-grips are the best thing i've bought all year. eagerly awaiting pricing.

Here's some details:

- The O-Box WM (Wide & Mini) has two filter trays, the rear rotating, both top loading.
- An optional rear bellows will hold a 138mm round filter as well.
- The mattebox will ship with two 4x5.65 trays AND two 4x4 trays, as well as a top flag and LWS 15mm rod mount.
- Optional side & bottom flags available, as well as insert mattes.
- The rear clamp ring is a whopping 150mm, with optional reduction rings available.
- Using 4x5.65 filters and shooting in the full Super-35 format, all 18mm lenses will clear. Some model wider lenses will clear and the RED One has a slightly smaller sensor than S-35 so that helps clearance as well. I successfully tested a 16mm Ultra Prime on the RED One in 4K 16:9.
- The shade is made from a new composite material that is very, very strong. For those that like to handhold by grabbing the mattebox, this one won't crack.
- If you don't want to grab the mattebox (your fingers might come into frame!), there are O-Grip mount points on both sides and at the bottom center. These mounts use standard 3/8" threading, so other accessories could be mounted as well.

- The pricing and availability are ... to be announced soon. But it will be very low and very soon.

The O-Box can be used as a clamp-on mattebox. I tested a preproduction unit so I do not know the final weight and I'll have to wait until I get a production model in before testing it with a 14mm Ultra Prime, but I kinda doubt it'll cover that one (big lens). The O-Box will weigh more than an LMB-5, but it will also do more, such as a rotating stage.

Just got this from OConnor:

O-Box WM with LWS Bracket and two filter frames – 875 g

BTW, there will be some more surprises from OConnor when IBC opens on Friday...

Thanks. Sounds similar to an MMB-1.
It's nice to have new options.
I'm guessing we'll get pricing info at IBC.

I wonder the pricing on the unit, 138mm bellows and 19mm rod attachment?

I wonder if this matte box can attach to the bridge mount of the ogrips. Then I just buy the existing ogrips and attach the matte box to them.

You're getting ahead of us :-)

For studio rods, yes, you can mount the O-Box on the O-Grip bridge. I'm in a hurry to get packed and out now but I'll post a snapshot of this configuration from the show.

Shawn, you're a clever one ...

I'm off for the Jewish new year, so please no one get mad if I don't respond for a couple of days. I'll try to answer questions when I can.

lol, tell that to Oconnor. I keep trying to beta test for them and I get nada. I'm an engineer by degree and profession, but I guess in this instance i'm just stating the obvious. Looking forward to seeing what shakes out.

Haven't went back to re-watch it, but doesn't the opening of the YouTube video actually show the O-Grips attached to the bridge that is supporting the O-Box? As Shawn is suggesting...

So how does one get to be a field tester for the new O'Connor gear? We can't all be Offhollywood. :)

Not really, it shows the O-Grips with 15mm LWS rods and the O-Box sliding on to those rods.

Visitors to IBC can take a look at this build at our booth, it looks wacky but you can get a good feeling for system flexibility by grabbing the different grip positions as you like.

The studio adapter takes the place of the LWS bridge. The adapter has two 15mm protruding studs which fit into the LWS holes on the O-Grip bridge, which then goes onto studio rods and you're done. There are two adapters, one centered for 19mm and one offset for 15mm studio.

Don't know yet how to address the test-pilot issue... we get these requests a lot and it's difficult to figure out how to be really fair with the limited amount of gear we produce in a beta phase. (when a proto series gets too large, performing quick fix-its becomes next to impossible.) As soon as we've got production of O-Boxes well underway we'll look at the issue in more depth, especially regarding the people we know from here.
