O.C. Red User Group

Good times had by all last night. Thanks everyone for showing up. And big thanks to Brad for hosting.

It's nice to know that we have a community of RED owners and users right here in the OC. It was great meeting all of you last night and sharing what's happening in this crazy business of ours. We are a pretty diverse group in what we do but it seems we share a common goal. To make the best product we can by shooting on a camera that blows most others out of the water.

That was really fun last night! Honestly I was wondering what we were going to do, but thanks to Brad for moderating and getting the ball rolling. Also thanks to Brad for hosting the event! There is a lot of depth of talent in the O.C.! I also got to see my first Scarlets.

I guess I didn't sign the sheet but if you want my email just PM me and I will give it to you.

OC Reduser Group Meeting Notes

OC Reduser Group Meeting Notes

I just wanted to put down some of the things that happened last night for some of those who missed it.

First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for making it out to the meeting, especially Brad for graciously hosting at his office.

Some OC REDUSER experience included:

Films - Gamer, Pirates of the Caribbeans, On Strangers Tides , The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo
Commercials
VFX Greenscreen
Short Films
Documentaries
Animation
Corporate
Events
Graphic Design
Personal Home video of kids at 4k

There were people of different backgrounds from the veterans of the film days to those who were new to digital cinema. Some veterans didn't even own a RED EPIC because renting was a great option as well. OC REDUSERs have a plethora of equipment. If you need something, it's likely one of the guys had it.

Subjects that stood out that we talked about:

Our experiences on set with directors, DPs, actors, models, producers and of course geeky electronic stuff.
Scott Miller's documentary with Squaw Valley
RED employees (past and present) about the history of RED
R3D workflow with Avid, FCP and Adobe
RED DIT workflow
Backup systems
3D Rigs, the direction the industry is moving and is it right for some business models
Brad's Original Spruce Goose Technical Drawings and Gallery of Apple products
NAB

I know there is a photo of our meeting floating around somewhere, but I don't have it. If anyone knows where it is, please post it for us. :)
There was plenty of food since there were leftovers.

Overall a great meeting for OC REDUSERs to connect and work together. I'll send an email to those who signed up later today.

Ah. I wanted to sneak out to this, but I was working up in LA. I'll have to come out to the next one. Would have been great to meet you guys.

Anthony, thank you for a great recap of the meeting!
We also talked a lot about setups.
Wooden Camera seemed to be the favorite for outfitting most Epic's and Scarlets.
Atomic13 also had a really awesome cover for the epic. With a T top handle in the works.
We also seemed to be pretty unanimous on using bricks instead of redvolts for production.

I'd like to thank everyone for coming out and making the event phenomenal as it was.
Brad, once again your moderation and hosting definitely helped bring it all together!
I'm stoked to meet people who are as excited as I am about Red. (I probably hung out with Ketch one too many times.)
I'm glad the OC reduser group is beginning to really take shape now.
I think Dave definitely put it best.

David I have picture of your scarlet! I'll post later.

But yes that group picture would be nice!

It was a pleasure to host last nights get together and meet everyone. Loved sharing all of our unique and common experiences with each other. It was especially helpful to see the various rigs, lenses and accessories that everyone has discovered and are using in the field.

My favorite "hands on" were with the Wooden Camera bits and the 3rd party Canon mount still lenses. Also super cool to see half a dozen OC based Epics and a Scarlet in our studio. I included a picture of most of the motley crew below. I wrote a summary on our blog.

Lets do it again around NAB.

Brad

BTW: i received my Canon mount for one of our Epics today :)

Not a bad looking bunch of guys if I do say so myself. haha

Loved talking shop with the lot of you. I didn't get into lenses that much, except with Dave.
Scott had a really nice Macro set up as well if I do recall.
Also wanted to thank Brian and Sean for coming out. Having worked at Red, you guys gave us some great insight.
And of course some Hilarious stories.
Michael, your post knowledge astounded us. I'm definitely going to pick your brain when I redo my editing systems.
Brad and I talked briefly about possibly getting a davinci demo/workshop after NAB. We'll see how it goes.

Here's a photo of David's scarlet. He's still waiting on most of his accessories:

(Spruce Goose themed not pictured haha I was more enamored by the tech sorry Brad)

I also added a handy little title to the group photo:

If any of you guys have more pictures, please post them!
Anthony has sent out an email. If you haven't gotten it, please contact him to get on the mailing list.

I am picking up a used MX package from a fellow reduser today. I am located in Santa Ana/Garden Grove. Would definitely like to make it to one of these meetings sometime. Can't wait!
